Boomers and their video calling obsession?

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:25

Anyone else noticed this? Work and family members, if they're a boomer then 9 times out of 10 they try to video call you. I think they discovered this during lockdown and have now become obsessed
I'm a millennial btw

OP posts:
Runnerinthenight · 06/03/2024 23:27

Wise up!

TotoroElla · 06/03/2024 23:29

No, they didn't 'discover' it during lockdown! Haven't you heard of Skype? That's what we did donkeys years ago. But no my Boomer parents never video call on their phones. We occasionally do a video call using our Alexa's.

TheSmallAssassin · 06/03/2024 23:49

I'm Generation X (I'm not sure I actually know any Baby Boomers). The only person who I video call with socially is my Gen Z daughter away at university. At work it would be unusual to have a cameras off conversation (young or old!)

Boomer here. I don't video call anyone - with perhaps Covid lockdowns being the exception.
I have been out with friends who frequently take video calls from their offspring (18-30 age group) in spite of having told them in advance that they will be out with friends.
In fact, I find the complete obsession with the younger adult generation constantly contacting their parents for every little thing more annoying. I went out on a shopping trip with a friend one day. Between her 2 adult daughters and her DH, she was contacted no less than 20 times during our outing - all for trivia.
Lunch with another friend a few weeks ago - 2 hours max, and she took 2 video calls from one of her DCs. And if they ignore the calls they get bombarded with text/WhatsApp messages so they may as well answer.

I would find that really rude that they would answer. And so what if they get texts? Ignore them or send a quick message saying they are busy, talk later?

malificent7 · 07/03/2024 01:36

My boomer dad dosn't even know how to text really.

Summerbay23 · 06/03/2024 21:43

I’ve given up knowing what a boomer/gen-x/gen-z/millennial is I’m afraid. I literally don’t know who is who (or largely care). Sorry, not the answer you were looking for.

Me too.

Im in my 50’s. I text. My dc use WhatsApp calls. I’ve recently learnt how to answer their calls. Not my choice of communication. Or phone calls. If I text them it’s because I need an answer. I don’t need the lengthy pics and video chat thingy. (I don’t have a phone full of trout pout pics either 😉).

Can people please stop shortening the generation name “GenerationX” to “GenX”. It is very upsetting.

are you usually easiy upset ?

Neurodiversitydoctor · 07/03/2024 03:51

wherethecrawmumsings · 06/03/2024 21:27

Boomer.

Whatsapp or nothing.

Don't email me, I won't read that.

That's nothing to proud of. Do you use apps ?

Goforitagain · 07/03/2024 06:15

I'm a boomer and don't use WhatsApp, I deleted it when Facebook bought it so everyone uses different things

augustusglupe · 07/03/2024 06:18

Neurodiversitydoctor · 06/03/2024 21:49

If you are 59 I am sorry to say you are one of us an Xer.

Oh I’m 1964, thought I was some sort of Boomer.
Whatever I am, I don’t like video calls 🤷🏻‍♀️

You are a boomer, it includes 1964.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 07/03/2024 06:26

Apologies (or congratulations) it would apear you are indeed a boomer. Although if I may say so your "who gives a shit anyway?" attitude is worthy of an Xer.

TerfTalking · 07/03/2024 06:27

Boomer in the workplace you say? Aren’t Boomers all sat on the deck of a cruise ship or in their empty four bed detached that they bought for £25,000 after having retired on massive final salary pensions at 50?🙄

you are being massively unreasonable and making a huge generalisation. FWIW, I don’t know a single boomer or Gen X that FaceTimes at the drop of a hat. The only people I get FaceTimes off are DD, Gen Z who calls whilst she’s cooking or DS, Millenial, whilst he needs to show me something in the house like a leak.

Goforitagain · 07/03/2024 06:33

I think that OP just wanted to post something goady so included work and family without actually thinking about if it made sense. Work calls are generally business teams meetings which include all ages

TBF not those born in 1964 they have another 8 years before retirement.

Valeriekat · 07/03/2024 06:56

I find the term "Boomer" rather offensive. It is an ageist and derogatory term.
What exactly do you mean by it?

Valeriekat · 07/03/2024 06:57

muddyford · 06/03/2024 16:10

Bloody offensive term.

Yes it is.

Valeriekat · 07/03/2024 07:00

upthehills1 · 06/03/2024 21:54

Geez no-one said that either, it’s just a term for a particular generation, it’s not derogatory. Funny getting this vibe from ‘boomers’ considering the never ending ‘millennial snowflake’ chat.

It is derogatory. Not sure you get to decide what other people find offensive.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/03/2024 07:16

upthehills1 · 06/03/2024 22:10

Baby boomer seems to be the acceptable term. Just curious that baby boomers consider their generational name insulting but other generational names aren’t.

It's the way it's being used on this thread and others. Always over generalised and associated with something negative. I have no problem with being part of that cohort.

plantlover34 · 07/03/2024 07:26

This whole thread is absolute gold. Would love to see a spin off "why are boomers so obsessed with Facebook now?"

It's confirmed what I've suspected for a while about the average user of MN (older!) but I'm really confused as to why people think boomer has negative connotations? Why would it be bad?

AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent · 07/03/2024 07:34

5128gap · 06/03/2024 12:56

Well given the term refers to an enormous and massively diverse group of people, with the only commonality being they are somewhere between the age of 60 and 78, I'm not sure I particularly feel the need for a collective term at all. But if I did need to place my 77 year old retired father in law, (who spends his days gardening and fishing) in the same group as my 60 year old CEO (who spends hers running our national organisation) in some sort of group, I suppose 'people over 60' would work.

"People over 60" includes the Silent Generation and a handful of Greatest Generation.

I did know that "OK boomer" was a slapdowm but before this thread I didn't realise boomers were so insanely sensitive about being born when they were born that we would actually have posters arguing we don't need to use specific terms for generations at all.

Well my kids (tweens ) and their granny (70's) both chat together on FT.

I don't know anyone else who does it.

FluffyToesMeow · 07/03/2024 07:48

Droolylabradors · 06/03/2024 12:34

I'm late gen x. Don't video call, don't phone anyone if I can help it.

Prefer email.

I communicate with parents (boomers) via WhatsApp.

Don't understand the millennial voice note obsession!!

Hate voice notes! (Gen X)

FluffyToesMeow · 07/03/2024 07:49

BMW6 · 06/03/2024 12:38

WTF is a voice note?

🤣🤣🤣🤣
