Boomers and their video calling obsession?

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:25

Anyone else noticed this? Work and family members, if they're a boomer then 9 times out of 10 they try to video call you. I think they discovered this during lockdown and have now become obsessed
I'm a millennial btw

OP posts:
CheapThrillsMeanNothing · 06/03/2024 16:08

@Finlesswonder
There are approximately 14m people alive in the UK born 1946-64, that's just over 20% of the population, 1 in 5. You're lumping them all together.
There's 14.1m under 18s- would you say all children do, x, y or z?

muddyford · 06/03/2024 16:10

Bloody offensive term.

Thedance · 06/03/2024 16:10

I am a boomer and I never video call people neither do any of my boomer friends. It must just be people you know.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/03/2024 16:11

Beepboops · 06/03/2024 15:56

@CaptainMyCaptain No it doesn't mean everyone their age is obsessed, I didn't say that did I?

But some people are. And they are my in laws.

You agreed with the OP who said that.

Yer don't say? Never would have guessed!* *😂😂😂

Quiet day? Couldn't you think of another topic? Still, it passes the time....

WannabeMathematician · 06/03/2024 16:13

What’s wrong with video calls?

EmmaEmerald · 06/03/2024 16:14

GuacamoleinmyDMs · 06/03/2024 16:03

Same. It’s my 20 yr old that uses it. Mainly to see the cat 🙄

Hmm

gotta be honest

"must see the cat" is probably the best defence for a video call 😂

Woollyewe · 06/03/2024 16:16

My parents never video call but il's would prefer to only ever video call. I hate video calls. My work day comprises of a huge amount of teams and zoom video calls so i really dont want to do more in my free time.

pleasecallmeback · 06/03/2024 16:19

Droolylabradors · 06/03/2024 12:34

I'm late gen x. Don't video call, don't phone anyone if I can help it.

Prefer email.

I communicate with parents (boomers) via WhatsApp.

Don't understand the millennial voice note obsession!!

I'm a boomer (I think, born in the 60's) but I don't know the difference between a voice mail or a voice note. Can someone explain?

I video call my son and granddaughter who live overseas, but it's WhatsApp for everything else.

Not sure whether you're being serious

well obviously they are. The written word is not your friend is it.

Daisyblue77 · 06/03/2024 16:34

‘Boomer’ has become an isult. Boomer this , boomers that’ im a boomer just, i dont know any of my freinds or family that are boomers who video call, my grandaughter video calls me
at least once a day, and calls our family chat. All
of us join ages 2- 61. If you dont want you boomer relatives to be in your life just tell them. Or tell them they have to make an appointment . So sad people think like this

Nevercloserfortherestofourlives · 06/03/2024 16:39

Fin,
Boomer here.
I wouldn’t want to video call you. HTH

RafaFan · 06/03/2024 16:39

Nope, have not noticed this at all. I live in a different country from my family and husband's family and have not seen them in person since before Covid. Managed to get my mum set up so we can Skype once a week so she can see her grandchildren (she doesn't have FB), but MIL is totally resistant to it. We Facetimed her once when a family member was there to show her how, but she has never attempted it again. I wish she would, so she could have some relationship with her grandchildren, but I think she's just not comfortable with it.

you can speak into your messanger or WhatsApp text box and then just send it as a message.a voicemail is just when you phone and leave a message if they don't answer.

you need to press the mic icon. just incase you fancy sending a message like a "young un" 😀

Love this. 😊 I hope the cat complies. Ours would probably just show their arse to the camera before sauntering off. 😂

AgnesX · 06/03/2024 16:45

I'm on the cusp of that generation and I do video calls in teams because I have to. It's an organisational expectation 🙄

Outside of work? Not on your nellie!

thepastinsidethepresent · 06/03/2024 16:47

Out of interest, OP... what age range do you consider 'boomers' to be?

Newgolddream70 · 06/03/2024 16:51

If anything I would have said Boomers would be the least likely to video call! I'm Gen X and hate it too. My ex used to video call all the time - bloody annoying.

RafaFan · 06/03/2024 16:52

5128gap · 06/03/2024 12:42

The ageism is in part the use of the word boomer, which unless you are very socially unaware, will know is frequently thrown about as an insult . Especially when coupled with a patronising little aside that 'they must have discovered it in lock down' suggesting they are so out of touch they see basic communication channels as an exciting new toy. These are your colleagues you're talking about, and generalising that the older ones irritate and time waste to indulge their childlike awe of newly discovered technology is a harmful ageist stereotype.

I agree that "boomer" is often used insultingly now, as in the original post. To be fair, "millenial" is also frequently used as an insult too. I'm just glad to be Gen X - it seems we're so anonymous in society that we're not worthy of insulting (that I'm aware of)!

serin · 06/03/2024 16:54

I was born in the 1960s the only time I've ever been on a video call is when one of my kids video calls me. I much prefer what's app.

Shodan · 06/03/2024 16:55

Aw.

Don't worry OP- one day, if you're lucky, you'll be one of the older people that younger generations will sneer at.

If you're even luckier, you'll be like a lot of the current older generation and just think that the younger ones talk a pile of crap.

This. Move on OP.

Elphame · 06/03/2024 17:11

As a "boomer" I hate, loathe and detest video calls. Seems to be more of a young persons thing in my experience.
