Boomers and their video calling obsession?

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:25

Anyone else noticed this? Work and family members, if they're a boomer then 9 times out of 10 they try to video call you. I think they discovered this during lockdown and have now become obsessed
I'm a millennial btw

OP posts:

As a Gen X I don't see the problem..., just don't answer?

As another Gen X, I concur.

SenecaFallsRedux · 06/03/2024 15:17

My apologies, 60-80

Actually 60-78, with a few 59 year olds whose birthday is later this year.

crostini · 06/03/2024 15:19

I pretty much exclusively do video calls and I'm millennial

thecatsthecats · 06/03/2024 15:22

Give me a video call over a voice note every time.

If anyone sends voice notes but doesn't receive them - take the bloody hint!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 06/03/2024 15:23

Not in my experience. Quite the opposite infact.
Another criticism of boomers?

TheGhostILoveTheMost · 06/03/2024 15:26

Not a boomer. The person I know that video calls the most is my 12 year old! Lots of group calls with friends after school and weekends.

My boomer mum would be mortified if I video called, what if she hadn't brushed her hair yet or was in housework clothes.
I did arrange to video call during lockdown so the children who were young could see her but it was always pre-arranged and very staged.

But she's your mum, why would it matter what she looks like?

TimetoPour · 06/03/2024 15:30

Not as irritating as the people that constantly call on loud speaker so everyone within 10 feet can hear their conversation.

I would presume the pp wouldn’t care but that her mum would. Why pretend to not understand? From what the pp said, her mum is someone that likes to be ‘ready’ before being seen. Some people are just like that.

My FIL always wears a shirt and tie and I’ve never seen him not completely ready to leave the house. Each to their own.

Beepboops · 06/03/2024 15:42

I agree OP, my in-laws do it all the time. It drives me fucking crazy. I don't want a phone shoved in my face whilst I'm trying to relax on my weekend only for the reception to break up or me run out of things to say.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 06/03/2024 15:45

I suppose it's a bit like generalising that's the yoof are obsessed with filming the shit out of everything they witness ...

In conclusion - phones are a fucking blight!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 06/03/2024 15:47

Showing my age here but how is a voice note different to just leaving a message?

But that doesn't mean everyone in their age range is obsessed. You're talking about two people.

thecatsthecats · 06/03/2024 15:55

A voice note is added to a thread of written messages. It's good manners to return contact in the same manner as you were contacted, plus messages are sent at the convenience of the sender, read at the convenience of the receiver.

So I'm not interested in receiving a wittering voice message in a chain of texts and pictures.

One friend leaves bloody essays, 3+ minutes long, including lots of questions. I'd literally have to take notes to follow up.

(I also hate voicemail unless it's to leave a brief factual response tbh)

RedPony1 · 06/03/2024 15:55

I'm Millennial and my parents are Boomers.

We all hate video calls and would never do it!

Beepboops · 06/03/2024 15:56

@CaptainMyCaptain No it doesn't mean everyone their age is obsessed, I didn't say that did I?

But some people are. And they are my in laws.

LakieLady · 06/03/2024 15:57

I'm a "boomer", as are most of my friends. I've never made or received a video call in my life. We phone, text or email, but mostly we see each other face to face, in pubs, cafes and our homes.

Millennials and Gen Zs should try it some time.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 06/03/2024 15:58

Soooo now RTFT and also know what a voice note is. Thanks Grin

OP doesn't seem too interested in engaging with posters who have answered her questions ...

MsFaversham · 06/03/2024 15:59

What a stupid generalisation and YABU for using the term boomer.

I'd argue the big difference is you don't have to phone someone to send a voicenote. You just record it and send it like a message.

GuacamoleinmyDMs · 06/03/2024 16:03

Momstermunch · 06/03/2024 12:35

My boomer parents never ever face time me. We phone each other or use messenger. It's my 19yo who loves a face time..

Same. It’s my 20 yr old that uses it. Mainly to see the cat 🙄

Dentistlakes · 06/03/2024 16:05

I loathe FaceTime. My mum likes it because it’s free and she can get to see her grandchildren. I just disappear once the kids are there and leave them to it.

MawkishRomantic · 06/03/2024 16:05

Insulting OP but I still had to google what generation I am.
Gen X apparently.
Still feel like typing “tosser” but that’s a bit rude really .

Ggttl · 06/03/2024 16:08

I don’t know anyone who likes video calling
