Boomers and their video calling obsession?

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:25

Anyone else noticed this? Work and family members, if they're a boomer then 9 times out of 10 they try to video call you. I think they discovered this during lockdown and have now become obsessed
I'm a millennial btw

OP posts:

Just also to point out that some of the the "Silent Generation" (b. 1928-1945) were as much beneficiaries of the imaginary land of milk and honey that existed prior to 1990 as the official "Boomers". Probably more so than people who came of age in Thatcher's Britain.

I suppose we don't consider that because, erm, silent😂

Dontcallmescarface · 06/03/2024 17:45

Ok "Millennial"

Boomer here. Never video call. Never call at all really. I use WhatsApp.

Same here. Use WhatsApp all the time. Don't think I know how to do a video call

Echobelly · 06/03/2024 17:51

Not seen it from my parents or in-laws, they just phone or do audio calls from whatsapp

Devonshiregal · 06/03/2024 17:51

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:29

I don't think ageist means what you think it does. It means "discriminating on the basis of age", not "noticing people of the same generation develop similar habits"

perpetuating segregation and separation of society based on their “generation”, and making sweeping comments on how people behave because of it, is certainly pretty close to it don’t you think? If not out and out ageist.

if you said “have you noticed how all British Asians…”, or “have you noticed how all polish men…” …..oh yeah, you wouldn’t say that would you?

AngelinaFibres · 06/03/2024 17:55

Dotjones · 06/03/2024 12:27

Not in my experience, generally it's only young people who want video calls, older people dislike them intently.

This. I'm a year outside the boomer category. I hate video calls.

Stereotypes are discrimination. Your original comment was ageist as fuck and you do NOT get to Millenialsplain to other people to try to get out of it.
Don't know a single person in that demographic who does this.

Redpaisley · 06/03/2024 17:56

Droolylabradors · 06/03/2024 12:34

I'm late gen x. Don't video call, don't phone anyone if I can help it.

Prefer email.

I communicate with parents (boomers) via WhatsApp.

Don't understand the millennial voice note obsession!!

I hate voice notes. It's a lazy way to communicate, recording message while doing other things, and only type of communication where receiver has to make more efforts.

Goforitagain · 06/03/2024 17:56

OP said work.I don't think you often have a choice in a work teams call, it doesn't matter which generation you are.

Thedogscollar · 06/03/2024 17:57

@Finlesswonder
I am a woman of 62 and I have never initiated a video call in my life. I prefer texting, calling or meeting friends and family face to face.
Your OP is both ageist and rude. As for becoming obsessed with video calls during lockdown, what a very ignorant comment. During lockdown I was working as a midwife, still am. Had no time for video calls too busy covering shifts not filled due to covid.
You would do well to be respectful of all generations. People have their own identities. Your post is lazy, arrogant and ridiculous.

But straight to whining about boomers she goes. Wonder what she's
Ike to work with?

Oakbeam · 06/03/2024 18:00

My mum is a FaceTime fiend. She’s nearly ninety.

6pence · 06/03/2024 18:01

58 here. I love to see who I’m speaking to. It’s almost as good as seeing people in person.

You can keep your voice notes!

Redpaisley · 06/03/2024 18:01

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:35

Guilty as charged, voice notes are the best!!!

Yes they are the best for the sender because you don't have to fully pay attention while speaking unlike writing a message. But receiver needs to pay full attention and cannot fast read it and has to go through all the fillers and blabbering. The least thoughtful way to communicate is through a voice message

Tarkan · 06/03/2024 18:01

My parents are Boomers and don't even like phoning, never mind video calls. They text more than anything.

I'm on the border between Gen X/Millennial and the people who video call me are a Gen X friend who has disabilities so video calls are easier than texting and occasionally my Millennial DH but he usually just phones me and is the only person who I know who prefers a phone call rather than a text.

NoTouch · 06/03/2024 18:03

The older generation, I am early Gen X, actually enjoy holding a conversation with another person, preferably face to face, and know it is a more effective means of communication practically, socially and mental health wise.

Something many millennials could benefit from, especially for MH.

MrsCarson · 06/03/2024 18:04

Nope, I'm a baby boomer just and don't video call anyone, I'd rather not talk on the phone at all and will text you. I've only had zoom calls with a family member living in another country far far away.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/03/2024 18:04

The only people I know who video call (without there being a legitimate reason to need to see something) is my 62 year old sister, her 33 year old daughter and my 54 year old husband. So a boomer, gen x and millennial.

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:35

why ? What is the point of them? My Dd does it and it is just stream of consciousness bollocks.

19lottie82 · 06/03/2024 18:07

I hear you…… my Dad constantly tried to FaceTime me and I hate it! I just reject it and phone him back 😂

PinkTonic · 06/03/2024 18:07

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:29

No you don’t understand what it means. Discrimination (how we act) is one aspect. There is also prejudice (how we feel), and stereotypes (how we think).

HTH

Oakbeam · 06/03/2024 18:07

I’m a boomer. I use generally video calls for family and close friends because that is what they use. Otherwise, I phone. I hardly ever text anybody.

AnybodyAnywhere · 06/03/2024 18:09

I’m a Boomer and have never made or received a video call. I have one friend who video calls with her daughter but her daughter initiates them.

Oldtigernidster · 06/03/2024 18:09

BeaRF75 · 06/03/2024 12:28

I think I am probably a "boomer". I have never Facetimed or video called anyone in my life, and I have no intention of ever doing so. It's a ghastly invention. So we're not all the same, OP!

Couldn’t have put it better myself!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 06/03/2024 18:09

DH would rather stick pins in his eyes than video call, same for my parents! My mum only just discovered messaging a few years back!

i hate video calling, I always imagine it’s something younger people do, certainly seems that way when I am out and about.
