@DrunkenKoala The Other Missing Sock People have you looked here:

@RedRedCabbage Teaspoons disappear because often people absent mindedly throw them into the bin with the tea bag.

There's a short video that keeps popping up on Twitter, where a man is fishing from a boat and catches a fish. He takes a photo with his phone in his other hand and then intends to throw the fish back, but... guess what, he accidentally chucks his phone into the sea whilst still holding the fish!

Makes me chuckle every single time!

I want to know how my DH gets the last squeezable bit of toothpaste out of the tube. Every. Time.

HoneyWogan · 05/03/2024 23:56

Why so many blatantly incompetent people last so long in jobs without getting found out?

I'd love to know why a teacher, nurse, soldier etc. at the very junior level of their career have to undergo training and gain qualifications and experience before they're given responsibilities and allowed to progress... but the very top job in those (and other) sectors - Minister for X - just gets given to anybody who happens to be in the cabinet who the PM reckons might have a bit of a crack at it, even though they have no connection with the sector whatsoever; or otherwise there's nobody else who wants the job and the PM doesn't like their appointee.

MrsWhattery · 05/03/2024 23:57

Where are my kitchen tongs?

Well I know where mine are. They pinged out of my hand and somehow threw themselves down a very small gap between the washing machine and a cupboard, and I can’t get them out. So yours might have done similar.

I’d like to know what happened to my beloved chunky green glass flower pendant that fell off on a long car journey in 2007. I was in a closed moving car when it fell off yet it was NOWHERE in the car at all, I searched and searched. I still hope it will turn up even though I no longer have that car!

Also why do they put sugar, pasta, lentils etc in bags that split downwards when you try to open them, so all the contents fall out. Grrrr.

HoneyWogan · 05/03/2024 23:58

I'd love to know where all my cheese sandwiches disappear to. I make one each morning for my lunch, turn my back and they just vanish into thin air.

Where did the little lump on the first knuckle of my left forefinger come from? Google says it’s a node typical of arthritis, but why would I get arthritis in my non dominant hand at a relatively early age with no family history?

And where does Liz Truss get her confidence from and can I have some please?

I just recently realised there’s a hard lump on the knuckle of my middle finger on my right hand. And one side of my collar bone is bigger than the other, is that unusual, or have I just never noticed before?

NefertitiV · 06/03/2024 00:11

@WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout

My dog can’t hear ignores her name but can understand chicken immediately and runs in. I’d love to know why her hearing is so selective.

It would have been more effective to name her 'Chicken' or 'Dinner!'

Oh and who was Jack the Ripper?

@MardyBra imi was at the Jack the ripper museum in October and there were onoy a handful of suspects but one of them does match the dna that was on a victims scarf. So case closed.. they know who it is now.

BaldricksWife · 06/03/2024 00:29

What happened to Shergar?

PomPomtheGreat · 06/03/2024 00:37

AccidentallyFabulous · 05/03/2024 15:13

I'm not particularly interested in this but in terms of mystery, why has the Jack the Ripper mythology grown up in the way it has to the extent of guided walks in Whitechapel to the murder sites, and businesses named after him (looking at you, 'Jack the Chipper' fish and chip shop in Greenwich).

I don't get it. No 'Harold Chipman' fish and chip shops I'm aware of so why are we okay with the murderer of Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly having all this pop culture stuff?

(Sorry OP, I get this isn't what you were after but I've been thinking about it a lot lately...)

Harold Chipman made me snort.

Ta da...

My sister and I saw this last week and I have to say....we were both very tempted!!

Except of course that it would never get used as a glasses holder as we would both do what we always do and "just pop them down here" for a moment and then the combination of menopause and being half blind means we will forget where we put them and not be able to see them even if we managed to remember!

Did Nessa say yay or nay to Smiffy?

New Xmas special coming up so we should find out the answer to that one at least.....unless they string it out even longer to boost James Cordens every further flagging career.

How did Sinitta and Brad Pitt happen?

NeedAdvice2024 · 06/03/2024 02:23

Shinyandnew1 · 05/03/2024 23:37

Nooo-this is a much believed myth but it wasn’t Walkers you are remembering! It was probably KP or Smiths. Have a google, there is lots about it online.

Before Walkers became popular the big brands were Golder Wonder/Smiths/KP and they all had salt & vinegar in blue bags and cheese & onion in green. Even the supermarket home brands used these colours. Walkers came along with the opposite colours and confused the nation.
WHY they used the opposite colours to every other brand is the mystery.

This!! It’s absolute madness yet is just accepted. They get some clown who knows diddly squat about, say, health or education and let them start calling the shots. Michael Gove and Jeremy Hunt spring to mind…

Marie Celeste.
Dyatlov Pass.
MH370 - which I do believe will be solved sooner or later.

MH370 probably the most important because of the closure for a large number of families. Marie Celeste the most enduring historically.

Never heard of dyatlov, just read up on it. What a mystery indeed!

How anyone in the US can possibly bring themselves to vote Trump after his attempted insurrection and utter incompetence during the pandemic.

More in line with the tone of the thread, where is my black top?

Seriously, where? Not in the drawers (mine, DH's or DC's), not in the washing basket, not drying.

It is folded between two towels (or two of somebody else's laundry items). You have already walked past the cupboard it is in several times.

iloveeverykindofcat · 06/03/2024 07:45

@MardyBra almost certainly the Polish barber Aaron Kosminski. He was schizophrenic. A reliable witness readily identified him and he fits the profile perfectly. As he was already institutionalised the witness refused to testify as they didn't want an insane man to be executed.

ClockTiger · 06/03/2024 08:04

Roanoke and Dyatlov aren’t really mysteries, are they? The settlers just went to live with the local native tribe (tribe has occasional blue eyes now) and didn’t they leave a sign pointing towards their location?

And Dyatlov, wasn’t it just that they developed extreme hypothermia, which means disorientation and a feeling of high, rather than low, temp, so they removed their own clothes?

My mystery is why the fuck didn’t mine and DH’s phones charge last night? Different cables, different sockets; other stuff in the sockets stayed on all night so it wasn’t a power cut, just our phones. Baffling.

I was amazed when someone i knew started working for the civil service and it was the same there too. She was actually moved around managing different departments as a senior manager, bossing people around and making decisions when she knew nothing about the subject - things like agriculture, transport and mental health! It must be so frustrating to be the people who know what they’re talking about, having to deal with clueless highly paid bosses who make stupid mistakes. Just why?
