To think maybe I’m missing something, or is this madness?

I don’t particularly think I’m being U here, so maybe IABU just for starting this thread. However, nipped into Tesco earlier and decided I’d grab some Mothers Day cards, as otherwise I’d forget. I came across this card, which read “Love To You Dad On Mothers Day”.

Now correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this just a little bit of madness? I know there are one parent families, however that’s what Fathers Day is for. Are all the supermarkets doing this? Is this a long standing thing? My brain is well and truly baffled. And yes, I’d also think the same thing if there was a card for Mothers on Fathers Day. Worlds gone mad.

To think maybe I’m missing something, or is this madness?

Not as bad as the one I saw in the card shop the other day "Happy Mothers Day from the Dog". Still, it takes all sorts I suppose, if it makes someone happy to imagine that their pet has any concept of Mothers Day then I guess its not harming anyone.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 03/03/2024 17:27

I think that some kids whose mum's have passed away they see their dad as having the role of mum and dad and would like to mark the day.

There was a child in my class years ago who used to make a card for her dad when we made them for our mum's in school.

They had those too GrinThere was one from the cat as well as the dog, but I didn’t see any other animals

Mothers Day is hard for kids who have lost their mum. Everyone else is celebrating their mum and they can't.

My DC make me a card for mother's day.

Yes I suppose so, and I can understand that. I think it just confused my brain, because I’ve never seen cards like that before!

Well you've seen them now

They are there if people want to buy them it's no biggie

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/03/2024 17:36

I think it's fine

I may have sent my father a father's day card from the cat before Grin.

Shinyandnew1 · 03/03/2024 17:37

Having taught children whose mums had died, they always were offered the choice to make a card for someone else (or not) if they wanted.

HelloMiss · 03/03/2024 17:37

Why would you think it's 'madness'?

Floopani · 03/03/2024 17:39

I saw similar in Sainsbury's, and to honest I was quite touched. I have been impressed with the inclusivity in cards in there lately. I know they are just trying to make money, but it was quite nice to get a Christmas card from DD that said 'to mum and her partner'.

Lazypeopledrivemecrazy · 03/03/2024 17:40

The idea of filling a gap for those who no longer have a Mum, is a nice one, but I very much doubt that that's the actual reason card companies have come up with the idea. It's just yet another cynical way of getting us to spend more money in my opinion.

LoobyDop · 03/03/2024 17:40

Clearly, someone in a brainstorming session said BUT WHAT ABOUT TEH MENZ, and someone else took them at face value.

I think one of them is around here actually, posting about turkey teeth and lesbians.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 03/03/2024 17:41

They do sell father's day cards for mums as well. A friend of mine who's dad fucked off when she was a baby, has for quite a few years bought a "to mum on fathers day" card, as well as mothers day.

Its not something I necessarily understand, but horses for courses. I'd never buy one from a pet, but then we dont have pets, and if we did, we wouldn't "humanise" them like that, but again, I wouldn't judge those who do.

Coconutter24 · 03/03/2024 17:43

Yeh bit odd but I guess some people like to show their thanks to the single parents that raised them. Not as bad as the cards from pets!! I’ve also seen them for aunties which is odd

HelloMiss · 03/03/2024 17:43

@LoobyDop .....or......someone thought maybe a kiddo wants to give a card to a 'mother' to them in a set up which is a bit different to others

You know....normalising differences....inclusive

Ridiculous24 · 03/03/2024 17:49

If there's money to be made...

OutOfTheHouse · 03/03/2024 17:51

I don’t see the problem. To me it’s a way for a child to acknowledge that their dad is taking in the role of mother.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/03/2024 17:51

IsTheOffDutyDoneYet · 03/03/2024 17:29

No horses? Well, that's discrimination right there...

FootOnTheGas · 03/03/2024 17:53

It's not just money to be made.
It's a sign of respect from the children/ young adults of lone parents who appreciate and see first hand the enormity of what's involved.

FootOnTheGas · 03/03/2024 17:55

Two parent families wouldn't get it, be thankful of that.
Bereaved children do get it, one in ten children lose a parent under the age of 18.

FootOnTheGas · 03/03/2024 17:57

One in 20, not one in 10.

hoonicorn · 03/03/2024 17:59

That's quite sweet actually

thatneverhappened · 03/03/2024 18:02

20 years ago I was a Saturday girl in WH Smith and a guy came in asking where the cards were for happy Mother's Day from your unborn child. At the time we def didn't do anything like that so I told him to check the internet but you can get them for all sorts now

YouveGotAFastCar · 03/03/2024 18:04

I'd have thought it was for people who were widowed and found Mother's Day hard as their wife was dead; rather than for one-parent families. It seems valid for that reason.

kitsuneghost · 03/03/2024 18:09

You get ones for mother's on father's day too. You also get all sorts of granny ones too. They are in the business of selling cards to the daft. It's only a thing if you make it a thing. If nobody bought them they would produce them.
