To think maybe I’m missing something, or is this madness?

I don’t particularly think I’m being U here, so maybe IABU just for starting this thread. However, nipped into Tesco earlier and decided I’d grab some Mothers Day cards, as otherwise I’d forget. I came across this card, which read “Love To You Dad On Mothers Day”.

Now correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this just a little bit of madness? I know there are one parent families, however that’s what Fathers Day is for. Are all the supermarkets doing this? Is this a long standing thing? My brain is well and truly baffled. And yes, I’d also think the same thing if there was a card for Mothers on Fathers Day. Worlds gone mad.

I'd have thought it was for people who were widowed and found Mother's Day hard as their wife was dead; rather than for one-parent families. It seems valid for that reason.

Just as Valid for one parent families as well

DontWasteMyTime · 03/03/2024 18:15

Card companies will cash in on any bloody thing if they think people will buy it.

DancingOctopus · 03/03/2024 18:17

When I was in Tesco before Valentine's Day there were cards with things like " Happy Valentine's Day to my son". This seems to be in the same vein as that.

EatSprayGlove · 03/03/2024 18:17

I've seen these before. At our school the kids make a card for someone special on the mothers/fathers day. Mine mostly do me or their dad but one mothers day my youngest came home with a card for the cat...

Katemax82 · 03/03/2024 18:18

It's bollox really

HelloMiss · 03/03/2024 17:43

@LoobyDop .....or......someone thought maybe a kiddo wants to give a card to a 'mother' to them in a set up which is a bit different to others

You know....normalising differences....inclusive

Or, they could have a whole day for male parents. They could even call it a special name for that role, like, I dunno, I’m just spitballing here… Fathers’ Day?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 03/03/2024 18:20

Yeah they also have someone who is like a Mum to me cards. Its a clever money making scheme whilst coming across as quite touching. And they do exactly the same on Fathers day so it really isn't about the men. (Even with the stupid unnecessary z on the end)

clpsmum · 03/03/2024 18:21

I think you lead a sheltered life tbh

CatamaranViper · 03/03/2024 18:24

Coconutter24 · 03/03/2024 17:43

Yeh bit odd but I guess some people like to show their thanks to the single parents that raised them. Not as bad as the cards from pets!! I’ve also seen them for aunties which is odd

Odd?

I'll let my friend know. Her mum died when she was 10 and her dad abandoned her and her siblings. Fortunately her auntie took them all in and has been their sole parent ever since. Every year my friend and her 5 siblings have celebrated mothers day with a trip to the grave and taking their auntie out for lunch.
I'll let her know that she's odd for buying a mother's day card for her auntie

So kids who don't have a mother should just sit and do nothing while their classmates make mothers day cards/gifts? Are they not allowed to celebrate the only parent they do have because someone on Mumsnet doesn't like it?

Cbljgdpk · 03/03/2024 18:28

I actually get that as if you only have a dad who is filling in mums role then that is quite sweet. The ones from animals are too far though for me, especially when given in totally seriousness.

Riverlee · 03/03/2024 18:31

I’d be a bit perplexed if I saw that as well.

They aren't done in total seriousness though really....right?
I thought it was more of a joke

You’d think so but I also know someone who took their dog to meet Father Christmas which apparently is a thing so I suspect there is an element of seriousness for some people

It's not for the men, it's for the children without a mum. It allows them to buy something and join in the mothers day celebrations.

It's very othering being a child with no mum. And mothers day can be especially hard. If these cards can help then it's a good thing.

There are equivalent cards on father's day.

AlwaysGinPlease · 03/03/2024 18:50

Why is anyone bothered about what cards are available? So what if there's cards to or from dogs/cats/goldfish. It literally has no effect whatsoever on your life.

TwentyFirstCenturyOracle · 03/03/2024 18:58

I think it is nice for children to have the option to send a card to their dad on mother's day if they don't have a mum. There are DC in our family who do not have a mother and they do like to send someone else a card when their classmates are all busy planning mother's day as it makes them feel less different.

Loopsydoo · 03/03/2024 19:00

I always celebrate my mum on Father’s Day as she brought me up by herself. I don’t see an issue with this 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sleepychicken · 03/03/2024 19:23

LoobyDop · 03/03/2024 17:40

Clearly, someone in a brainstorming session said BUT WHAT ABOUT TEH MENZ, and someone else took them at face value.

I think one of them is around here actually, posting about turkey teeth and lesbians.

🤣🤣🤣

HelloMiss · 03/03/2024 19:26

@LoobyDop oooh dunno....maybe they could have BOTH!! Just,er...spitballing??? Here

Who really cares? If it makes someone out there happy..

Sconeswithnutella · 03/03/2024 19:32

My cousin always buys her mum a card on Mother’s and Fathers Day because she feels her mum was both parents, I think it’s really sweet to acknowledge that as a single parent my auntie DID have to be both of those. It’s like that.

dontcountonit · 03/03/2024 19:37

It would be odd to give a card to a father on Mother's Day when there was a mother around who was an active parent.

However, there are plenty of families where there is no mother, and where someone is doing their best to fill in for that role.

This whole thread makes me sad. It's not difficult to realise that not everyone has a traditional two-parent set up and that some people are just muddling along the best they can with the hand that life dealt them. It's a complete lack of empathy.

itsgettingweird · 03/03/2024 19:42

It's madness - yes.

My mum has died. I will celebrate Father's Day on that day for my dad.

My friends are both "mum" to their kid and both get cards on Mother's Day.

Mind you I've had about 5 million marketing emails from various places asking me if I want to opt out of Mother's Day emails in case it's hard. Ignoring the fact the opt out emails remind people it's Mother's Day 🤔🧐

I bet for various reasons some days are hard for others and don't apply to them but everyone knows they exist so all this trying to pretend they don't or make them something they aren't is a little weird imo.

Perhaps the mother has died and this is everyone's first Mother's Day without her?

BurbageBrook · 03/03/2024 19:45

A friend of mine lost her Mum at age 3 and she always buys her dad a card on both Mother's Day and Father's Day as she says that her Dad has always had to be both things to her.
