To think maybe I’m missing something, or is this madness?

I don’t particularly think I’m being U here, so maybe IABU just for starting this thread. However, nipped into Tesco earlier and decided I’d grab some Mothers Day cards, as otherwise I’d forget. I came across this card, which read “Love To You Dad On Mothers Day”.

Now correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this just a little bit of madness? I know there are one parent families, however that’s what Fathers Day is for. Are all the supermarkets doing this? Is this a long standing thing? My brain is well and truly baffled. And yes, I’d also think the same thing if there was a card for Mothers on Fathers Day. Worlds gone mad.

Odd?

I'll let my friend know. Her mum died when she was 10 and her dad abandoned her and her siblings. Fortunately her auntie took them all in and has been their sole parent ever since. Every year my friend and her 5 siblings have celebrated mothers day with a trip to the grave and taking their auntie out for lunch.
I'll let her know that she's odd for buying a mother's day card for her auntie

Ok you do that, I’m sure she’ll appreciate you wasting her time telling her that

BurbageBrook · 03/03/2024 19:46

I echo @dontcountonit that this is a really unempathetic thread.

I lost my Mum and although I wouldnt buy a card for my Dad I always buy him flowers on Mothers Day because I need to mark the day somehow. I also buy him flowers about once a month too, because Mum always had flowers in the house and I wanted that to continue.

britneyisfree · 03/03/2024 20:16

Funny they don't have those for mums on Father's Day. My mum would like one

I think that some kids whose mum's have passed away they see their dad as having the role of mum and dad and would like to mark the day.

There was a child in my class years ago who used to make a card for her dad when we made them for our mum's in school.

I can understand that, because it’s a school activity, and you have to make something whilst everyone else is making Mother’s Day cards. But to actually buy one is a bit odd IMHO. My Mum died when I was very young, and my Dad brought me up, it never occurred to either of us to get involved in Mother’s Day.

There will be SOMEONE who wants to send that card. It won't have been produced for fun. It could be for a child who's mum has died or left and they want to acknowledge this somehow with their dad. It could be anything. It is not beyond most people's comprehension that families come in all shapes and sizes.

Clearly, someone in a brainstorming session said BUT WHAT ABOUT TEH MENZ, and someone else took them at face value.

I think one of them is around here actually, posting about turkey teeth and lesbians.

Just spat out my tea at your turkey teeth comment. 😂IYKYK!

Not as bad as the one I saw in the card shop the other day "Happy Mothers Day from the Dog". Still, it takes all sorts I suppose, if it makes someone happy to imagine that their pet has any concept of Mothers Day then I guess its not harming anyone.

Yes! I just don't get the mothers day from dogs thing. Surely their mum is a dog?!

peachgreen · 03/03/2024 21:41

DD (lost her amazing daddy when she was 2) makes me one on Father’s Day. I’d be happy for her to see this in the shops so she could understand that it’s not just her.

I think you lead a sheltered life tbh

You know, I really do wish I led a sheltered life, I do. And I want to not bite to this comment, but I’m going to anyway. If sheltered counts as having PTSD, anxiety and panic disorder, being sexually abused as a child, losing a parent to suicide, trying desperately to support a severely clinically depressed husband through life and being a one income family for years with no support, trying to help your own suicidal teen who has been in an abusive and non-consensual relationship, and supporting your other child going through an ADHD assessment, then I am absolutely 100% your woman. However, if it’s not then please jog the fuck on.

I started the thread because, walking round Tesco with a knackered brain, I saw the card and was baffled. And to be honest I wanted to have a bit of mindless chat on the subject, as I’ve not see them before, to take mind of the shit I’m going through at the moment. I can’t say as I examine the card selection closely usually, but today I did. It’s madness because they will literally produce all kinds of cards for absolutely everyone. The pet ones were more baffling and more madness really, but you know. It was more a bit tongue in cheek, and I accept I am BU as it’s useful for people who would like to purchase that type of card for the day - Flowers if I’ve upset any one, I’m not an unempathetic monster.

As you all were.

They do the same on Father’s Day

bleurghbleurghbleurgh · 03/03/2024 22:09

My best friend always sends me a 'to Mum on Father's Day' card. DD's father fucked off when she was born, so they always make me smile.

It's really no biggie, who is to say who/what constitutes family these days.. and it may mean a lot to the receiver!

donteatthedaisies0 · 03/03/2024 22:19

It's for the kids really isn't it ? I did get Valentine from the dog , which my husband also signed🐶.
