To move to Yorkshire from the south coast on my own?

It’s a medium term plan (DD currently at uni and elderly mum would make it difficult atm) …probably in the next 3-5 years…I’ll be in my early fifties by then.

I’ve lived on the south coast since I was toddler, but these days I have about 3 friends here…one is single but has a very active social life, the other two are married with family commitments.

I fell in love with Yorkshire when I visited for the first time about 8 years ago. I feel like it has all the cultural stuff that interests me, but with less pretension and I love the countryside up there. I’d also be able to get a nicer house than my current one with no mortgage…a major consideration as my mortgage currently runs until I’m 67 and I have limited pension provision.

Despite all these pros, my DD and my best mate are being quite negative and unsupportive. They feel I ‘made more effort’ here to socialise I wouldn’t want to move, but it’s really not about that…I just want a fresh start.

AIBU to think I could move in my fifties, on my own and create a new life for myself?

And if anyone has any opinions on Harrogate and surrounding areas or Otley/Burley/Poole in Wharfdale as places to live…bring it on!

If it helps at all, the south is also full of people having to move away from where they grew up because they are priced out. It’s all ripples from the insane London market. But of course then they head north and spread the ripples. We do at least have a hearty mortgage but definitely have a bigger house that we could afford where we lived - we have come back to DH’s home though so it’s only me that is the problem.

Gosh, where do I fit then? I'm a northerner who has lived in the south for 30 years due to work and a man and I'm now I'm going home. Alone. Very happily.

Who knows. Not really my point. And good luck. More about folk being priced out. Look at Whitby. Huge amount of second homes and holiday lets. Locals can’t afford to live and work there.

Again. Not got an issue. The posts I found fault with were the ‘£800k to spend in the north’ type. No one ever suggests Rochdale or Barrow. Maybe those types of places will be levelled up if people take the plunge and move there, not always to bloody Harrogate or HB.

I would absolutely move - what do you have to lose? Just a couple of friends who you can chat to on video call and who can come visit etc? Go where you feel comfortable and happy, life is too short. You can always come back if it doesn't work out :)

Well, why don’t you move to Rochdale then? It’s not southerners’ responsibility to level up places any more than northerners’.

(And if people did move en masse to Rochdale, there would just be moaning about gentrification and locals being displaced from housing etc.)

I already live in a dump up north that no one wants to move to. Chances I’ll ever get to move away to somewhere nicer up here are probably nil lmao. But unlike you lot we can’t scurry further north.
Maybe not your responsibility to level the north up, but didn’t Rishi promise to take levelling up funds away from us to spend in Tunbridge Wells ? Ask yourself why most up here voted for Brexit and Boris. We’d love a bit of gentrification 😂

@Objectrelations Also came to say Beverley. Let you in on the best beach. Had a lovely walk there yesterday. Mid August and hardly a soul there at 10.30am. www.moreyorkshire.com/fraisthorpe-beach/

@Peeppuandpopo there is one negative to people being able to WFH and move North. My neighbour WFH and has a London based job, they go in to their office one day a month. It’s assisting in pushing up house prices here, had quite a few Southerners do this as we are on a fast train line. There are very few jobs in our area that command a wage like that.

BirthdayRainbow · 30/05/2025 21:44

@MintyCedric how are your plans coming along?

I made the move and I Love It!

Objectrelations · 31/05/2025 22:51

@BirthdayRainbow where have you settled? I’m doing it too - just buying a house east of York and going for job interviews 🙂

BirthdayRainbow · 31/05/2025 22:59

I'm near Haworth and highly recommend it. Gorgeous views, friendly neighbours, everyone I meet is welcoming and offers recommendations when I ask. I've had a lot of help with jobs and even though I didn't move for a good reason, I am happy I'm here.

Asiatoyork · 01/06/2025 09:53

I made the move to York from abroad last summer and also enjoying it. Good luck with the house buying @Objectrelations
