Ripped off?

So I went to the local fruit and veg stall at our local market town. I never usually buy from the stalls - supermarket as it is easier usually for me.

Anyway, I bought - 1lb carrots, a cauliflower, 2 heads of broccoli, a head of garlic, 5 pink lady apples and 4 parsnips.

Total - £18.10 😱 I was so shocked I didn't say anything and a huge queue behind me... but this was a complete rip off in my opinion. Did they see me coming or is this normal? I certainly won't ever go back to them. Genuinely still reeling.

Wasn’t Norwich was it? I can’t believe some of the prices charged for fruit and veg at the market.

EmilyTjP · 02/03/2024 19:02

Jesus! That would be about £6 in a supermarket.

No - seaside town in the south.

Well there's a lot of different things that could be at play - he's presumably a small business so can't buy on the massive quantities that supermarkets do.

Some veg stalls basically hoover up whatever is at the wholesalers at a cheap price but it means they don't always have a fantastic range and the quality can be iffy as you'll be getting the dregs.

There are grades in food and flowers from A1 down to ( at least) C2 ( I work with flowers) so quality is a spectrum.

Are they good? Do they look healthy? Are they organic? Do they taste good? All of that is a factor.

If there was a queue, he's doing something right!

I go to Wholefoods periodically and the price of the veg there blows my mind. However the quality is fantastic and it tastes way better than Supermarket, so when I feel flush I buy some bits from there. Otherwise it's Aldi all the way for me.
