To wish my neighbours would stop slamming their front door?

I just don’t understand how some people can be so inconsiderate. I live in a small terrace house in London (before anyone asks, no, there are no detached houses around here). EVERY time my neighbours leave or come home they slam the door so hard it’s so loud and I can almost feel my house shaking.

Last night the door was slammed several times at 1.30 am. I just don’t think it occurs to them “it’s late, people are sleeping so I will open and close the door really quietly”.

And no, I can’t speak to them about it - only vent my frustration here.

You have my sympathies, vent away.
I pity my poor across the road neighbours. The house they are attached to slam every door repeatedly - front door, porch door, car doors. It drives me mad from over here, their house must shake every time the slammers leave their house! So inconsiderate.

Same here and at 2,3,4 in the morning it wakes our dog who barks (literally 3/4 alert barks- he's not a constant barker) You think they'd hear him and think that they'd probably also be waking us. But nope. They get in the car and slam those doors too.

PostItInABook · 02/03/2024 09:58

Ah yes. My next door neighbours do this. Every door. Always slammed with all their strength so my walls vibrate. Literally just done it as I’m typing this. Drives me mad. They are generally very nice though so I put up with it and just mutter to myself when needed. Their daughter is entering her teens and my god, the teen tantrums she throws are loud too. 😂

Titsywoo · 02/03/2024 10:03

It's frustrating. My neighbour sits in his mid life crisis Porsche every morning at 5am and revs it loudly for 5 minutes before driving away. It always wakes us up. So inconsiderate but that is how some people are.

zingally · 02/03/2024 10:17

I live in my flat and my upstairs neighbour is the same.
The front doors are weighted, and therefore self-closing. But rather than hold the handle and guide it as it shuts, they just march in and let the door slam shut behind them. It makes a hell of a racket.

To slightly defend your neighbours though, maybe they've got one of those awkward doors that only shuts if you give it a good hard bang?
The first house I ever had was a tiny one-up-one-down terrace, and that had a really sticky door. The lock would only engage properly if I gave it a proper weight-behind-it yank when closing it.

Houseplantmad · 02/03/2024 10:29

You have my sympathies as our neighbours are the same. Slam, slam, slam all day and night long. I have mentioned it before when our children were young but they don’t give a toss.
They also have two dogs that bark crazily every time we, or anyone else, approaches our front door day or night. I’ve started shut the fuck up loudly to the dogs, as I really don’t care what the neighbour thinks. It seems to be working as for the last two days the dogs have been in their rear living area when I’ve come home.

DistingusedSocialCommentator · 02/03/2024 10:38

Some people are uneducated re social skills, IE they go around slamming house doors, car doors, fridge doors and fall into sofas etc. It is what it is and they only solution is they move or you move.

You could try sound insulation on your connecting walls, but often it needs to be at least 4 inches thick and even then, it depends on the type of noise and vibration

How often do they open close door and is it all doors

Notcontent · 02/03/2024 13:19

Looks like it’s not just my neighbours!

It’s definitely not a “sticky” door. I think some people just seem to not think or care how their actions impact other people. I think it’s a way of thinking. Almost like a mental block.

I live in an apartment and all of them have fire doors. So you can't let any door shut behind you or it slams so hard that my bathroom cabinet flies open!
The apartment upstairs still haven't figured it out

I also live in flats with fire doors, flats below and opposite always let their doors slam shut, it drives me insane, the whole building shakes! They even do it if they need to go in and out a few times in a row. Yet I can go out multiple times a day, with 2 dogs in tow and still manage to shut mine quietly! 🙄

AwkwardSquad · 02/03/2024 16:08

Same here! Slam slam slammity fucking slam. So intrusive!

Balloonhearts · 02/03/2024 16:16

Mine has to be slammed. Otherwise it won't lock, the key doesn't turn. Does my head in as its annoying when carrying things to have to get hold of it and yank it shut.

daffodilandtulip · 02/03/2024 16:20

And car doors!! If you're going to work at 5am, it's compulsory to slam each of your car doors at least three times before you rev your car, to make sure everyone is awake.

Soubriquet · 02/03/2024 16:22

I honestly was thinking you could be talking about me….our front door sticks something horrible.

we have to yank it open and slam it shut. We hammer it every few weeks to make it fit better but it’s so horrible.

We are now using the back door unless we have to open the front door

GiantFootTinyHead · 02/03/2024 22:35

@Balloonhearts if you aren’t detached get it looked at!

It's been looked at. Apparently there's nothing wrong with it and these type of doors are all a bit like that. 🙄

It's a housing association flat who has been incapable of fixing a boiler for the last 4 months so honestly a door that does technically work has no hope of being fixed.

Catladyireland · 02/03/2024 22:41

YANBU and it's so annoying. Hopefully if it is the case of a sticky door, they sort it soon

ColleenDonaghy · 02/03/2024 22:54

It's annoying, but if you're close enough to hear their door slamming then it's guaranteed there's something you do that annoys them - noise, parking, bins, there'll be something.

Pussycat22 · 02/03/2024 22:58

Titsywoo, put a potato up his exhaust!!!

I call it fucking selfish entitled pricks and the ratio of those people in the UK population is increasing

Treehuggingmutherfunkin · 02/03/2024 23:25

I have the same issue just started slamming my door

Challenger2A7 · 21/04/2025 00:40

We used to live in a terrace house where our neighbours and their four kids under ten slammed their front door to the extent that the surrounding brickwork was falling out. The kids hated having to do it, but their mother was the one who insisted, we used to hear her scolding them if they hadn't clashed the door hard, whether coming in or going out. She herself clashed it hardest of all, of course, especially if there was nobody else at home. I never worked out why.

This is the case in my flat too - I think there are literally only a couple of us who live in them which seems to understand being considerate and don't let them slam shut.

Luckily you can't really feel them vibrate when it happens but you certainly still hear the noise! One had renovations being done by workmen a while ago too and they literally just let it slam shut every time they went in and out of the flat for something from their van.

Is it really so hard to have a bit of decency for other people living in the same building as you?!

Bulldog01 · 21/04/2025 03:11

We lived in a semi, Neighbours next door constantly slamed the doors. They were a family of 5, it started at 7 am when the Farther was leaving for work. Then when the children went & returned from school. We had to move house it was so intrusive. My daughter and I counted the door slams in one single day we noted the Date & times, 54 door slams in a 24 hour period. One year later,we noticed the people who moved into our old house, moved out after a year!
