There is a man who lives down my street, never really spoken much other than a nod and a wave in passing. He lives with his partner and kids, as do I.

I recently moved my eldest to a different school, which is the same as his child goes to. We'll occasionally have very brief small talk if we're both doing the school run.

I had a friend request from him, so I accepted. I then get a message saying "I've seen you added me" I didn't, he sent me it so I said not of what I know but I had one from you, my daughter had my phone she could've done it by mistake (to this day I'll never know) whether this was a conversation starter for him or not I don't know.

He now messages asking how I am, what I do for work, that he thought I was married. These are usually followed by "I bet you think I'm a right weirdo for messaging" I've replied maybe 2-3 times to be polite but it's a bit odd. DP knows, I've not hidden anything. It's never anything creepy about my looks or anything sexual.. it's just been random chat.

Do I keep replying politely trying to end the conversation, just stop replying or block him? I don't want it to be awkward but I don't want him getting the wrong idea or worse his rather scary looking partner!!

I’d leave him on unread or block tbh. I have my settings so no one can see if I’m online chatting to other people anyway.

He maybe meant 'I see you've add me back/ accepted my request.'

I just wouldn't bother replying to the social media messages and just continue with the usual chit chats now and then.

If he asks why you haven't replied just say you aren't on social media much.

I would ignore the messages completely. Hopefully he'll get the hint, but I would definitely be a bit suspect of his intentions.

Doesn't sound like he has anything interesting to say. It's not a conversation just pointless small talk which you say you have in real life anyway. I just wouldn't reply and switch off your online status.
