Food orders for work related events are to be vegan and vegetarian only

ValerieVomit · 01/03/2024 12:58

We all received an email at work to say that when we order catering in future for work related events we can only order vegetarian and vegan food. The management team has imposed this. It's to reduce our carbon footprint. I don't think that this means there is to be no carnivorous food available for the rest of the organisation but our department won't allow us to order any.

Reasonable or not?

When have you ever been to a work buffer and seen a label “sugar free”?

and forgive me if I missed that you have allergies but what are you expecting to be “hidden” in a vegan sandwich that isn’t also hiding in a ham sandwich or a sausage roll vs vegan sausage roll? Or dairy based salad dressing vs vegan one?

Same with "vegan, sugar-free, keto" sweet options - most go to the bin.

I was referring to this part.

I was merely saying I wouldn't eat certain vegan foods, even with no other option, that's my choice. Taking away other options would not make me eat things that I personally find have an unpleasant taste and could make me feel unwell later.

I’m sorry you appear to have an intolerance to so many fruit , vegetables ,grains, oil etc that you can’t eat any food without a full ingredients list . It must be very limiting. Although it’s great for you that meat and dairy /eggs neutralises those intolerances. I’d suggest carrying around an emergency sausage.

Is this aimed at me? I said I'd be fine with things like a daal or veggie curry. I'd be fine with houmous and veg sticks. I would avoid most sausage rolls, vegan or not.

Maybe the vegans/vegetarians could carry around a carrot and hummus then they'd be sorted for meals?
(Just as daft isn't it!)

Not when the whole point of the thread is about the office trying to reduce their carbon footprint

vincettenoir · 10/03/2024 12:57

I think it's a good thing. Those who missed meat will probably have meat at their next meal. No biggie.

I'd avoid some food labelled vegan unless I knew what it was made of like houmous. I'd avoid anything labelled sugar-free in case of sweeteners. It wouldn't make a difference if there was other food available or not. Things like daal and veggie curries I'd happily eat.

But thats the point, if its all vegan it doesn't need to be labelled, the food is all edible to everyone bar allergies. It's just food.

You said you’d avoid anything labelled vegan. I was pointing out how daft thst was because you (probably) eat a tonne of that’s vegan without even thinking.

No. I said I'd avoid SOME food labelled vegan. It depends if I know what it is, like falafal, or houmous, or daal. If it's a substitute food I would avoid it.

Well in that case I’m sure you’d be fine at this hypothetical buffet?

based on dozens of work events I’ve been to over past ten years where I’ve had the veggie or vegan option it would be:

More likely it would be: falafel, salad, fruit and sandwhiches which would probably be: egg, cheese, hummus and roast veg. If there were any substitutes it would likely be sausage rolls which you’ve already said you’d skip anyway.

they aren’t going to crack out JUST quorn and other substitute sandwhiches or mystery vegan meat curries. It would be to expensive if nothing else!

Tbh most actual vegans are the same

Panackelty · 12/03/2024 10:40

Interesting issue as I work for a big private firm and even coffee and biscuits went years ago, food well before that. Even if sent away for day to work elsewhere you’re expected to fund own lunch, no expenses. So I’d be happy with some real vegan food as long as it wasn’t all the new ultra processed imitation stuff.

Thementalloadisreal · 12/03/2024 19:24

Still find it so weird that people who quite happily eat bacon, ham, other revolting processed meats, carcinogens, are so insistent that vegan processed food is evil.

You should worry more about how animals become burgers than how plants become burgers.

Has someone said they eat meat based UPFs but not plant based UPFs? Anyone I know who avoids the latter avoids both. The exception would be people with an intolerance who would specifically avoid quorn for example.

Theunamedcat · 12/03/2024 19:52

I find it weird people like celery they actually purchase crunchy wet stringy stuff to eat and enjoy it

Can't be bothered to judge people over it just find it weird

MikeRafone · 12/03/2024 20:14

I like the taste of celery, it has depth of flavour and can be turned into an amazingly flavoursome soup.

Im not sure what is weird about enjoying the flavour of a food, or understanding that concept - even if you don't actually like the flavour.

Then why the need to announce they’d avoid vegan upf? A meaty buffet is just as likely to have upf .

If they were saying which vegan food options they'd happily eat and which they'd avoid.

Thankyou, yes, I think that may have been aimed at me as I said I’d be happy with the veggie buffet but avoid veggie/vegan upf- That is because I avoid most upf -so I don’t eat burgers or bacon either so now I’m having to ‘announce’ that too to put things straight! Where will it end?

Kalevala · 12/03/2024 22:46

@Panackelty

I'm the same, happy to eat wholefood vegan foods. I don't understand the assumption that people eat upf that contains meat just because they haven't announced that they avoid upf in general.

Me too, lovely subtle peppery flavour, and great in a soup. I wonder if some of the people who dislike it have a mild intolerance to it, as it’s an allergen, so have learned to avoid it naturally? Or perhaps that’s overthinking and it’s just the string!

SuePine69 · 13/03/2024 15:48

I think there are many people who are unable to enjoy or even sense subtle flavours. That's why they like to put sauce on everything. Sugar and acid, if they don't have them then they think it lacks flavour. I can enjoy celery, to some people it would be flavourless.

I don't find the flavour of celery mild at all. I think it can be overpowering in things! I don't mind it, as long a the flavours are balanced, but I find too much really unpleasant.

I can't eat it raw without it being filled with houmous or something to disguise the taste. I'll use loads in a bolognese, but cut in 5mm slices so it isn't stringy. I prefer celeriac.
