Can anyone tell me about highlights?

I’ve never had them before, I have long dark brown hair and a few greys at the top, the hairdresser said a good way to cover them
could be with highlights. I don’t want blonde in my hair, what sort of highlights could I have? How long do they take and how long do they last? How much are they?
Are there different colours to ask for? Hair dark brown, medium skin tone and blue eyes

I’d recommend watching some hair transformation videos on social media, for ideas. These before and after videos are really popular now, and hairdressers seem to make them to drum up business. But it’s also a good way of understanding the hair cut/colour process. I quite like watching videos from abroad and seeing the different fashions elsewhere.
