My Dd is 6 in July
Which class would she go into in September this year, Year 1 or 2?
We’re abroad at the moment

Year 2

Year 2
Presuming England, I think Scotland might be different, not sure about Wales / NI

Bramblecrumble22 · 26/02/2024 11:43

Year 2, I moved 'back home' to England in year 2.

SgtJuneAckland · 26/02/2024 11:44

Year 2, dS is 5 and will go into year 1 in September (when he will still be 5)

SpringOfContentment · 26/02/2024 11:50

As others have said, Year 2 in England.
If Scotland, Wales or NI, could be different (i dont know enough to know), and I suggest you repost with the region in your opening post.

Thank you!

Because she’s a young one, would Year 1 be better?
She’s bright, but has just started reading with me ( level 2) and writing short sentences, I’m worried Year 2 will be a huge jump after Pre school

Don't hold her back if she's bright.
The first year will be tough, but better one tough year that the rest of primary bored.

PuttingDownRoots · 26/02/2024 12:39

Schools are used to helping kids catch up... remember, other kids will arrive from abroad with no English and slot in as well.

You have 6 months to "catch up" a nit on the curriculum.

She'll be the right age to be going into yr 2.

If she'll be going to state school, it's highly unlikely they'll allow her go into the 'wrong' year group unless she has documented special needs.

Private may be a different story.

It's not normally something you're given much choice about though.

Sandysandwich · 26/02/2024 17:31

Is there a particular reason she didn't start school in reception?
Just because if she has been away for something like extended hospital stays or significant illness it might be better to ask to go into year 1 to give her longer to catch up with everything socially and stamina etc. But if its just a move from a different country or homeschooling that probably wouldn't be needed and she would do fine in her proper year group.

@Sandysandwich We live abroad and it’s Pre school until age 6. Lots of playing, she has only really learnt to read and write at home with me, but isn’t up to Year 2 level
