Amazing just that really posting here for traffic. He's 97 and still going strong he's truly an inspiration.

OP posts:

Fuck off .!some people deserve appreciation.. he is one of the best..

If you have nothing good to say then don't say it.

tomago · 25/02/2024 19:30

And? That's not inspirational it's just what he has chosen to do. Lots of people don't aspire to work to 97.

He's also extremely privileged and famous. The rest of us might be working til we're 97 as there will be no option!!!! If we're lucky.

ChiefEverythingOfficer · 25/02/2024 20:04

tomago · 25/02/2024 19:33

I think he's wonderful but not for being able to crawl at 97

Give it a rest please.

JUST CARRY ON SCROLLING instead of nitpicking. You made your point in your first post. No need to drone on.

Tattletwat · 25/02/2024 20:13

I do like his documentaries however he is very hypocritical and self righteous.

This is in AIBU people have right to their opinions.

Omg in true mumsnet style the nit pickers are out in force it's a different world on here.

I agree with you. He is an amazing 97 year old- not many remain as active and as influential as he does at 97. He's an amazing naturalist and broadcaster and a thoroughly decent human being. Our greatest national treasure- although many nitpickers here won't like that phrase or concept.

EverybodyLTB · 25/02/2024 20:17

lol at the obtuse responses.

Mate. I’m early forties and I’m pretty much knackered, and all my good ideas just sort of drift away while I put the telly on. It IS actually bloody inspiring and wonderful to see someone who is way past retirement age, doing pioneering work, getting out there and encouraging and engaging with generation after generation of people.

He was wonderful when he was young, too!

This is not a case of people fawning over an ‘old man’ for the sake of it, he’s incredibly talented, intelligent and socially conscious. He’s still pushing himself which, yes, is an achievement. All my friends’ parents (and my own) are counting the days till retirement. I’m in awe of anyone having so much to say and do and put out into the world, that they just keep on going. I find his passion and energy incredible, and hugely motivating.

CathbadsCloak · 25/02/2024 20:18

Mountainpika · 25/02/2024 19:29

His age is relevant because he has continued to work well past the age when most people retire. He is still inspiring people.

To be fair, he's continued to work past the age when most people die.

Tumbleweed101 · 25/02/2024 20:22

I think his work has been inspiring and I got my interest in the natural world from watching his documentaries as a child (I'm now coming up towards 50). The fact he is still able to work at 97 doing something he is passionate about is amazing, especially after working in elderly care and you see how poorly many people are at that stage.

I'm pretty sure people like him and the Queen live long lives in fairly good health because they have a purpose and are dedicated to it. I wish I could have had that kind of passion and purpose in my life.

This is in AIBU it's a question so no people aren't nitpickers, they are answering the questions.

Atlaswasafool · 25/02/2024 20:28

I do like DA but I do get a bit nauseated by all the awed adulation.

He’s a rich man with amazing private healthcare, probably ate organic food most of his life and does a job most can only dream of.

No they are not- they are arguing over the premise of the question.

Laiste · 25/02/2024 20:45

He's doing well to still be working, and I love to hear his voice commentating on wildlife - somehow when others do it it's as if the info. might not be quite as trustworthy😅

However, it does grate a little when he talks about everyone cutting air miles when he's spent his whole life enjoying jetting around to just about every corner of the world.

caveats:
i know a sphere doesn't have corners
and i know his travel helped bring awareness of the natural world.

labamba007 · 25/02/2024 20:48

He is an inspiration but he's also lucky enough to do a job he loves and brings him joy. If you do something you love you never work a day in your life. So that's how I imagine he's still doing it!

He is amazing man...I can't look at animals without hearing his voice...

I can't look at animals without Johnny Morris doing a comedy conversation in a voiceover.

How to offend everyone on MN:

  1. Say something
Whattodowithit88 · 25/02/2024 21:11

Completely agree! To be honest I don’t even bat an eye lid when famous or celebrities die, it just doesn’t affect me, when we lost the queen it was sad but I wasn’t personally upset. When DA goes I generally believe I will be grief stricken, which is saying something for me.

The man is a phenomenal human being, one of the greats and absolutely a national treasure for the UK. I already feel sorry for the younger generations coming up who will hear someone else’s voice over the animal documentaries, because they sound shit without him, he makes it!

strugglingnd · 25/02/2024 21:13

Soberthoughts · 25/02/2024 19:35

If I make it to 97 I want a 21 gun salute and full fanfare for every day I'm still living. Making it to 97 is an amazing achievement, whether or not the person had any control over it. Add on to that the incredible work David Attenborough has done and continues to do. I think he's awesome.

Totally agree….an absolute legend !

phishy · 25/02/2024 21:14

Sorry but that’s just not true. Have you never heard the dulcet tones of Patrick Aryee? Much better looking than DA too.

I think people fetishise DA too much.

I have not and don’t know who he is.
To be fair I don’t watch documentaries and don’t have the TV on a lot to catch one randomly but as soon as I see on bbc iPlayer DA has a new documentary out I watch it. In fact I only watch his, once he goes, I probably won’t bother watching any animal/natural world documentaries at all.

Dostadning · 25/02/2024 21:19

YANBU - his life's work (output is insane - check his wiki) is astonishing.

Floogal · 25/02/2024 21:20

Don't get me wrong, I think David Attenborough is OK. But I cringe whenever people do impressions of him and fawn over his voice. Actually puts me off watching his programmes 😞

Morningtimeride · 25/02/2024 21:20

He is truly inspirational.

Fair enough but I don’t think you can then say that someone else’s voice sounds shit.

In all my working life, I’ve learnt that no one is indispensable and that someone will fill the gap when DA sadly departs.

Look at the Queen, how people have moved on.
