Amazing just that really posting here for traffic. He's 97 and still going strong he's truly an inspiration.

My ds often says he would love to be like him.

It's not inspiring to not die

Oh do get lost.

It’s boring. Of course the man inspires some people, who may want to work past the usual retirement age and think they shouldn’t/can’t/should be settling down with their pipe and slippers or going on cruises.

AnnieMay55 · 25/02/2024 19:38

He is also amazing that he is still able to stand up in an auditorium and give a talk without any notes.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 25/02/2024 19:39

I’m in two minds about him.

He’s done a lifetime of incredible work raising awareness of climate conservation.

But it’s time to pass the mic.

You’d think he’d use his platform to raise up and enable the many amazing young climate conservationists coming up behind him. But no.

He’s a self-promotion engine as much as he is a climate change activist imo.

FilthyforFirth · 25/02/2024 19:40

National treasure. That phrase gets thrown around but he truly is, love him!

And it IS inspiring to still be doing such good work at his age, so mentioning it is entirely relevant.

Why should he

He is wonderful. An inspiration and I love him 😍

SlowlyLurking · 25/02/2024 19:41

I feel like this is a bad omen. I was saying similarly to my family over dinner earlier about David Attenborough.

Cocothecoconut · 25/02/2024 19:41

I’m not a fan of him
he says we need to cut our ‘carbon footprint’ then flies him and film crew plus others to film some creatures in some far off country

There is always one 🙄

MillicentMaybe · 25/02/2024 19:43

I’ll be sad when he is no longer with us. He is an inspiration! And, my goodness, he was a gorgeous younger man.

CurlewKate · 25/02/2024 19:44

Makes a change from the usual Mumsnet ageism. Good to see some people are allowed to be old and also have value.

BumperCars · 25/02/2024 19:44

I admire him, he said the natural world helped him in his grief when he sadly lost his wife in 1997.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 25/02/2024 19:44

One what? As I said, I appreciate his work and longevity. But a lot of older “national treasures” purposely do more visible work with younger generations to share their platform. He doesn’t.

He's truly one of the most remarkable people of our era. According to his Wikipedia page, 'years active' began in 1951... over 70 years! (And that's not including a couple of years national service in the Navy).

Even apart from his enormous contributions to understanding of nature and conservation, his formative influence on BBC2 was important.

tomago · 25/02/2024 19:29

It's not inspiring to not die

That's not it though. He is still working. So being his age is inspirational because I'm sure not many people his age do still work.

See?

HRTQueen · 25/02/2024 19:46

Yanbu

Sir David Attenborough is an amazing man to still be working and passionate for a cause at 97 is incredible

few live to this age and those that do are very rarely as fit and their cognitive abilities have deteriorated far more that his have

his looking after himself which he has always been vocal about has certainly helped him (though we know it’s not a guarantee)

I believe him to be the most revered person in the Uk (only second to the Queen when she was alive)

Well I think he's wonderful still crawling about at 97 and dedicating his life to animals

Yep, same.

Don't want to bring the mood down but I'm dreading the day he dies.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/02/2024 19:50

The whole genre probably wouldn't exist in the same way without him.

Same. I'd declare a national day of mourning for him, if I could!
