To ask you to guess how much this shopping cost

Did a top up shop earlier, just of the bits we’ve run out of.

Two tubs of cream cheese
Veggie meatballs
Oat milk
Reduced loaf of bread
3 x Passata
2 x yoghurt tubs
6 apples
Margarine
4 x toilet rolls
Sink unblocker

One of the big four supermarkets. How much do you think it would cost? I was really surprised.

I’ll update with the cost soon

🤣 luckily for you, marg and veggie meatballs are favourites in our house!! Just love the stuff. You don’t know what you’re missing.

I do know what I'm missing, that's why I don't eat them.
I'm not a health-food crank, but I think it's sensible to avoid the chemicals in veggie food.

But is that what this thread was about? The question was guessing how much a selection of items cost. The question was not about what you thought about the items as per your yardstick for life. So - what drew you to post your judgment entirely uncalled for?

Georgyporky · 25/02/2024 18:48

I can't guess; I don't buy artificial man-made food like marg & "meat"balls.

Don't buy sink unblocker, soda crystals do the job very cheaply. Better still, don't let the sink get blocked. Get one of the things with tiny holes to cover the outlet, & don't put any food, or especially fat, waste down the plughole.

The most MN response ever 😂

Alwayswonderedwhy · 26/02/2024 19:38

About £30. You don't say what brands etc so hard to know really.

DanceMumTaxi · 26/02/2024 19:41

I’m Fed up too. Food shopping is ridiculous now. Lots of items have doubled in price in the last few years. It’s so hard to keep costs down and still eat reasonably healthily.

Georgyporky · 26/02/2024 19:42

I replied about sink-unblocker, which seems to have escaped anyone's attention.

Allthewallsarewhite · 26/02/2024 19:42

It is crazy, used to be able to do a weekly shop for 2 people in lidl for about 30-40£ only 5 years ago, so even though I am lucky enough to be able to still not have to scrimp, I definitely notice a big difference, but I guess it's just the world we live in now.

Kalevala · 26/02/2024 19:45

Based on what versions I buy I'd say £20.

Workingmytickettoparadise · 26/02/2024 19:47

£35

Moonshine5 · 26/02/2024 19:47

47

Fair enough. Maybe it’s not as outrageous as I was thinking. Majority supermarket brand, 2 or 3 ‘branded’ items. £30. Just fed up! It would have been £20 a few years ago

Yes, I was going to say £30.
Things are expensive now. The only reason I guessed was because of how closely I scrutinise prices these days rather than just putting things in the basket.

mitogoshi · 26/02/2024 19:49

£23 approx

It's coming up the same price for me £2 for 500ml or £2 for 2kg. I'm sure the soda crystals would last a lot longer but I've only had to buy drain unblocker once in over 5 years.

SometimesIchangemyname · 26/02/2024 19:49

Lidl is SO much cheaper. I looked in Tesco Express today to see if they had a couple of things I need to make a Biscoff cheesecake for someone. Then checked in Lidl(next door ish)
Tesco was £3.80 for the Biscoff and 1.69 for the biscuits. Lidl was £1.79 for the ‘biscuit spread’ And 72p for the off brand biscuits.
I am not usually that organised but was going to both shops anyway and it really stood out.

mitogoshi · 26/02/2024 19:52

I admit I don't buy veggie stuff or oat milk though so no idea really on that. In Lidl the non veggie versions would be under £20, it's my nearest shop thankfully

Nothingbuttheglory · 26/02/2024 19:54

I was going to guess around £30. I feel your pain. Going to the supermarket these days is an entirely predictable series of horrible shocks.

Kalevala · 26/02/2024 19:54

How are people getting such high figures? I'm getting £19 with bread at full price. Standard Tesco brand, one item finest, not the cheap versions.

Minecraftminecraft · 26/02/2024 19:56

Seems entirely normal. I guessed £25. It was amusing trying to work it out, but your spend is - as I said, entirely normal.

Oat milk is a bit more £1.40/L vs £1.20/2pints. Veggie balls are cheaper than meatballs. Marge cheaper than butter.

TheGoogleMum · 26/02/2024 19:58

I thought it'd be approx£26 so just a little over. I'm always surprised how expensive shopping is lately

mindutopia · 26/02/2024 20:00

I would have guessed about £35

Firkinhavinalaugh · 26/02/2024 20:08

I’m guessing your big ticket items are the :
drain cleaner (always useful - soda crystals don’t cut it with DHs shaving hair!)
the toilet roll
the margarine (Flora if you bought a big one)
veggie meatballs
oat milk

Am I right????

CrushingOnRubies · 26/02/2024 20:48

Wouldn't expect much change from £20

Once again - because perhaps I was not clear -

The OP did not solicit views on (1) what people think about the nutritional value or lack thereof in her groceries or (2) potential alternatives to items on her list.

The OP asked for an estimate of what the trolley potentially cost.

It is YOU who took this question as an opportunity to educate her on potential alternatives and to communicate your disregard for her food choices.
