Not aibu just intrigued. This thread was done on here ages ago and it was so fun. I have two:

Pasta is gross, I'll eat it but its not delicious as people make it out to be its cold slimy dough.

I'm sure she's nice but Beyonce is overrated.

OP posts:

Or they could say Ms/Mr child’s surname, and if the parent doesn’t have the child’s surname that’s down to the parents.

This could easily end up with teacher's being in trouble for using the wrong surnames (and is a lot to remember!) - Mum/Dad/Granny etc are probably just a much safer option.

Disliking dogs on Mumsnet is not an unpopular opinion…

Carrot cake is shite
Lemon cake is shite
Banana bread is shite
Stop putting fruit & vegetables in cakes and confectionery ffs

But then how else would I get my 5 a day 🤔 🤣🤣

Half of these replies are lists of things posters dislike (presumably), not opinions. So my unpopular opinion is that they should answer the bloody OP!

Also: they should bring back smoking in pubs 🚬

Yeah might as well be called "what don't you like"

DopeyS · 20/02/2024 06:41

When people moan about shopping local and you shouldn't use big companies such as Sainsbury's but they actually bring a lot more jobs to an area and give more options.

Also dark chocolate is disgusting and swimming/spas are overrated

It is if you don’t understand the nuances of the sport and also don’t bet.

I can see why outsiders struggle with it because the whole narrative is lost on them.

@MasterBeth

Have you ever heard of Secretariat? He was dubbed “the greatest racehorse of all time” when he won the American Triple Crown in 1973. The Triple Crown is 3 races - the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. He broke the speed record in all 3.
in the Belmont Stakes, he won by an astounding 31 lengths, a record that’s never been broken.
There’s a movie called Secretariat that’s absolutely amazing - and very uplifting. You can find it on Netflix or Prime I’m sure. It also gives you a peek behind the curtain of horse racing and what it was like for one woman against an entire industry of men. Well, one woman and her horse.

It's less of an ethical reason than you'd think. We don't eat cats because they're carnivores. (Dogs are omnivores and I think that's why other countries do eat them.) Eating carnivores on a significant scale is a) economically difficult, and b) poses greater health risks.

First, economics, as shaped by trophic levels and food chains. As I'm sure you know, plants create energy through photosynthesis, which is ingested by primary consumers, i.e. herbivores. Carnivores can't eat plants, so they eat the animals which eat the plants, and so the energy produced by the plants passes up the chain. Simple food chain : sun's energy ->grass -> rabbit -> fox

For the sake of this post, we will imagine a variation on that food chain: sun's energy ->grass -> rabbit -> fox -> human.

The problem is that very little energy gets passed up at each stage. Approximately 90% of the energy (in the form of plantlife) ingested by a herbivore is lost to the food chain, so you need to give your rabbit 1000 calories of feed to get 100 calories of rabbit meat later. This isn't unique to the herbivores, so 90% of the energy (in the form of dead rabbit) ingested by the fox is also lost to the food chain.

This means that if us humans want to eat fox meat, we also have to give the fox 1000 calories of rabbit meat to get 100 calories of fox meat later, and now it's got expensive. How do you get 1000 calories of rabbit meat? You have to give the rabbits you're farming to feed the foxes, 10,000 calories of feed.

So you can use 10,000 calories of rabbit feed to produce 1000 calories of rabbit meat or you can throw 900 calories away to turn it into 100 calories of fox meat. Which will you choose in subsistence agriculture? It's less hassle and less money to farm the rabbits to eat ourselves, and forget about the foxes.

There are, however, some carnivores I can think of that humans do eat, because they farm themselves, so to speak: wild fish! This is where health comes in. Tuna are carnivorous, and they're also known for being high in mercury. Why are they high in mercury? Because they're carnivores towards the end of the food chain. This is called biomagnification, which means that a toxic substance, in this case mercury, accumulates in higher concentrations at every successive stage of a food chain. Algae absorbs mercury, which is eaten by plankton, which is eaten by smaller fish. The bigger fish get a dose of mercury from each of the little fish they eat. Then the tuna that eats that bigger fish ingests all the mercury banked in its flesh. Rinse and repeat, and the mercury content becomes high enough in the tuna that pregnant women are advised to limit how much they eat, and not to eat marlin at all. Guess what marlin eat? Tuna!

Most famously, this happened with the pesticide DDT and American birds of prey. DDT persisted in the environment, so non-lethal doses accumulated in the bodies of insects, which were eaten by insect-eating birds. The insect-eating birds were dosed with tiny doses of DDT with every insect they ate, which built up in their own bodies. Then that led to a population-crash in peregrine falcons, which eat smaller birds.

Here ends the info-dump!

That’s so interesting thanks.

Niche, but I really don't enjoy ice skating. Just can't get to grips (I suppose quite literally!) with the feeling of out of control shuffling. Old enough now that I don't need to grit my teeth and give it another chance or make excuses for sitting out.

Disney clothes on adults.
Champagne.
Duck lips and funny eyebrows,
Those leggings that look like you're naked.
Folks who harp on about how many 'steps' they've done.
The Kardashian's 🤷‍♀️
White youths who try and talk in that weird Jamaican/street ghetto language but have never left Bromley/woolwich!
🤣 bad mannered folks.... I think that's all. Grin

What's your unpopular opinion? That you like all these things?

Cathaymum · 20/02/2024 06:56

How 🤔 many parents does the average teacher see in a year

and you expect a teacher to rember pupils parents names then?

I really can't see the 😕 issue,
with this,

Also i can allmost gaurentee that there will be someone at least one of the pupils parents,
who would have issue with a teacher referring to them by first name terms,
such as the teacher being a bit over familar by doing that,
that they prefer just being referred, as the parent of pupils name

and nowadays you be susprised how one person or just a few being a bit miffed about something 🙄
no matter how seemly insignificant in the wider bigger picture of things in life in general,

If they are pro actively vocal enough about it,
can susprisley get their own way...

achieve their objective goal whatever that maybe,

I don’t mind being called X’s mum but but I’m not your mum.
pretty sure none of my teachers at school addressed my parents as “mum” or “dad” and if they had they would have been corrected there and then.
Not full my myself just my children’s mum and no one else’s

  1. cats ought to be banned because they kill many birds
  2. is it really a cost of living crisis when there are something like 20 million cats and dogs in this country?
  3. why do so many people stop at the shop door or stagger sideways on a pavement?
  4. vegans are angry people because they’re hungry
  5. elderly drivers and motorhome owners should be discouraged from driving during rush hour
  6. dogs ownership should require a license and ideally the breed you are allowed to own could dependent on an IQ or competency test of some kind
  7. home ownership would be better if it entailed home inspections and a requirement to keep said property in a good state of repair (am annoyed when buying a home where the previous owner has done nowt for 20 years)
  8. inflation, high taxes, identity politics will probably be much worse when the labour government takes over
  9. we should be cautious about prescribing continuous courses of antibiotics for years to the very elderly because one day children, cancer patients and mothers undergoing c-section will die of antibiotic resistant infections

Why? What happened on the last one?

SushiMayo · 20/02/2024 07:10

why do so many people stop at the shop door or stagger sideways on a pavement? not really an opinion.

It's because they need to get their barings and are unable to walk in a straight line

The only thing I would add is - people who have missed the point of this thread and are nitpicking other posters' comments.

CaramelMac · 20/02/2024 07:25

My unpopular opinion is that customers should be told when they’re being arseholes and not allowed by companies to get away with getting what they want by complaining.

Too many companies just give in to petty complaints too easily which teaches people if they complain they’ll get money off or better service and it makes it harder for every company they interact with afterwards.

Social media is not universally negative and whisper it but not everyone who posts a picture of themselves and their spouse on social media is about to divorce.

I don't think that's an unpopular opinion. I think many of us would agree with that.
