To hope that you can recommend me a double pushchair that can fly ?

Posting for traffic as we desperately need a double pushchair that can fit in the overhead airplane compartment.
We are doing a long haul flight with a transit with 2 young DC and need the pushchair with us all the time rather than putting it in hold .

Is there anything that you can think of that fits the bill ?

I was imagining one that sprouted wings - like a sort of buggydrone.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 19/02/2024 15:41

I'd get 2 separate ones... then it's one pushchair (and a suitcase each) to drag through the airport plus a backpack.

moggle · 19/02/2024 15:41

Look for a britax holiday double. It’s not made any more so you’ll have to go on eBay / marketplace but i had one in 2019-2020 for my twins. It’s not that sturdy and weight limit only 15 kg each side but it should do the job.

Galeforcewindatmywindow · 19/02/2024 15:41

Chitty Chitty Pram Pram....

Noideawhatiam · 19/02/2024 15:42

If you are travelling with another adult, can you take two singles?
The is no double that will fit in the cabin, but the Babyzen yoyo does have a way of fixing two together I think.

Is one of the kids old enough to use a seat that attaches to the back of a stroller.
The Le Clerc one has a back and straps so it’s a bit more secure than most toddler seats/buggy boards. My 22 month old manages quite well on it.

The Le Clerc magic fold is fine for hand luggage.

You can connect 2 baby zen yoyos together. My friend with twins rented 2 and her and her partner took them on a flight. I don’t think they actually bothered connecting them at all though, easier for one adult to push each stroller.

I was blown away the other day by a post discussing single buggies that can go in the overhead locker but I'd be amazed if there was a double that could. Do people not understand how restricted space on a plane is? Cabin baggage should be kept to a minimum and taking a double plus I bet a few bags, nappy bags etc to go with takes up quite a lot of room. Where are the people behind/in front/next to you supposed to put their things?

I do get the nightmare that is travelling with kids but taking a double pram in the cabin isn't the answer. So you are unreasonable in thhat respect. We travelled when mine were 3 and 1 and just carried a child each when necessary. They were also pretty small we just sat them together in the single pram it was a baby jogger city mini single and just put it in lie flat mode and they both sat in it when we had to rush to gates. Can't you just do that a it's lot easier? Or a sling if one still a little baby?

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 19/02/2024 16:13

You can buy two single strollers and get clips that clip them together to create a double. You can use it as a double in the airport and then fold them away as two smaller singles for the plane.

We used to do exactly the same - put both in a single stroller. It was a Jané umbrella-fold buggy that could lay flat and had a raisable footrest. When reclined all the way and footrest up, we put the change bag in for back support, then toddler in first, baby (not newborn though!) between legs and did up straps. They seemed happy enough on those occasions when toddler didn't want to walk. They even both slept in it together! Obviously we kept a close eye on them.

We also used a wrap sling - even until the baby was quite big.

There’s no extra allowance, except for a nappy bag if you have a lap infant. So you choose if you’d rather a stroller, designed to fold to the airline approved size, or a carry on suitcase. No special treatment! If you’re late boarding and the locker is full you have to gate check.

The airlines are the ones actively encouraging us to take all this hand luggage and if you have a bee in your bonnet about locker space then I’d direct it where it belongs- at airline’s and their ridiculous luggage fees, not parents trying to make their lives easier.

Also not all airports do gate checking, they’re supposed to have loaner strollers but these are often hard to find or not newborn suitable. If you fly through one of these regularly (I do!), have had your luggage lost (also been there) or have had a pram damaged in the hold (hasn’t happened to me but it has to friends) then you’ll be really glad of having a carry on pram. The YoYo is hands down the best piece of baby equipment I’ve bought.

So OP- I’d go 2 YoYo’s with the connectors, or just push one each, unless your eldest could get away with the buggy board then I’d do that instead. Keep in mind though that usually only a passenger in a seat gets overhead allowance (and sometimes you even have to pay extra for that with certain low cost carriers). So keep that in mind when you’re deciding what comes on the plane with you.

Biffbaff · 19/02/2024 17:12

I flew easyJet last year and they let you hand the buggy over to put in the hold as you're boarding the plane so you don't have to be without it through the airport.

Amba1998 · 19/02/2024 17:13

I just cannot imagine you will ever find one you are after

solution

  1. take 2
  2. ask for special assistance
idontlikealdi · 19/02/2024 17:17

Take two cheap singles and clip them together if you need a double, you can get clips for this. You'll probably have to gate check though depending who you are flying with.

Penguinmouse · 19/02/2024 17:25

Just take your buggy to the plane door? Find it very hard to believe a double buggy would fold down enough to get into an overhead cabin. Or take two single ones but given you can gate check, do you really need it to be in the overhead locker?

susansaucepan · 19/02/2024 17:41

The DC will be just turned 3 and 4.8 at the time of flying .
The 4.8yr old is Autistic, non verbal and will either run/escape/refuse to walk/throw himself on the floor / have sensory overload etc and is unable to queue, follow instructions etc.

We will both be going, so two compact singles are a good option. The 2x BabyZenYOYO is quite expensive but would 2 x something like this do the job ?

www.smythstoys.com/uk/en-gb/brand/graco/graco-myavo-lightweight-stroller-midnight-black/p/223043

As for the kind person, concerned that we would be taking up too much space . Believe me, I would rather not have needed to travel with a pram for my nearly 5 year old but he is disabled and I have to keep him safe somehow . He will be a paying customer, like anyone else so I don't see how using his overhead compartment for a lightweight pram takes from other customers?
Surely they too will have space above their head if they are paying for a seat ?

Thank you that is a good idea . The seat would work well for the NT 2 year old as he will be 3 year old by then .

My only worry is whether the extra seat will stop the pushchair from folding ?

JanewaysBun · 19/02/2024 17:49

I think in this case you should qualify for special assistance and should be met st the cabin door with the pram.

I was going to suggest buying 2 x yoyos and using an unofficial "connect them together" thing from amazon but think the yoyo will be too small.

Could the youunger child use a buggy board? And then check a second stroller for them for longer holiday walks?

InTheRainOnATrain · 19/02/2024 17:53

Exactly OP, ignore that bonkers poster. Him
taking a buggy is no different to an adult taking a suitcase.

Re that Graco one check the dimensions carefully against your airline’s. You could also get a YoYo (or 2) second hand then pick up a new fabric pack. If your 3YO is NT and a decent enough walker the buggy board could be an option for them? I have a 3 year gap and never had a double, only a board. One advantage of the YoYo I will add is that every airline and airport will be familiar with it so you won’t have issues- I have often been asked ‘is it a YoYo’.

InTheRainOnATrain · 19/02/2024 17:54

Also you should, I hope, be entitled to special assistance so make sure you request it!

You can buy two single strollers and get clips that clip them together to create a double. You can use it as a double in the airport and then fold them away as two smaller singles for the plane.

This looks like the best option so far .

I know it was a bit absurd to ask about a double ( hence the silly thread title ) but I just wanted to make sure that I am not missing any easy tricks or existing lightweight compact double strollers .

Can anyone recommend a generic connection kit that they have used successfully?
