Anyone else get really cheesed off when they are reading a thread and it just disappears for no apparent reason or for “investigation behind the scenes”. As far as I know there is no investigation because these threads never reappear, I lose count of the number of times I am half way through a reply or just reading a thread and it vanishes.

I know people get annoyed when others don’t read the full thread, but it doesn’t really encourage this!!! I was really interested in the lady and her daughter with the gusto boxes this morning- it struck quite close to home for me as a childless daughter in a similar boat…

Deletion for privacy concerns when a thread hasn't gone the way OP thought it would annoy me, especially as it would seem unlikely the OP is recognisable from the thread

GoingDownLikeBHS · 19/02/2024 16:22

I've just come on to look for a couple of threads and assuming they've been deleted - the skiing holiday rich friends thing, and the In laws wanting £160k - both gone right?

When I started posting on here nearly 20 years ago it was very rare a thread would be removed, but actually I had to ask for my very first post to be taken down, I was talking about my MiL's circumstances of death that were quite unusual and two posters came on said they were taking the story to the press!! Had massive panic and MNHQ removed it which was very kind.

GoingDownLikeBHS · 19/02/2024 16:24

(Sorry, ignore that, I've found the considerably richer than you'm friends thread, its just full. Wonder if they'll start a new one!)

(I'll get me coat)

TenderChicken · 19/02/2024 16:37

I have been on Mumsnet a long time and back in the day they almost never deleted threads.

These days my watch list is just full of deletion messages. It's been a very noticeable change.

Flamme · 19/02/2024 16:41

I don't understand the ones where they withdraw because OP has concerns about privacy. Fine if they have actually been outed, but otherwise surely it's up to the OP to think about that before they start the thread.

Tlittle · 19/02/2024 16:45

I was strangely invested in the thread with the poor woman whose husband came home from a midweek night out with something on his ding dong. She was going to confront him in the morning as he was sleeping on the sofa, but it got deleted.

Me too! 😆

I just assume the majority of deleted threads are trolls. In my experience, the more interesting a thread is, the more likely it is to be fiction.

However, I wish MN would update their reason, so that “we’re looking behind the scenes” became “this poster is a troll”.

12manyimo · 19/02/2024 17:45

I think some topics generate a high volume of reports and moderators can't be bothered to moderate anymore, especially overnight, so they delete the thread out of pure laziness. Some comments are obvious rule-breakers but most have to be read in context and a judgement made and they probably just cba, it's too much work. Pretty much everyone ends up fighting these days, easier to shut the thread before it spirals.

Bloomingdaffs · 19/02/2024 17:46

You think MN should leave troll threads up?

Bloomingdaffs · 19/02/2024 17:48

The majority of deleted threads are trolls mostly started by PBP.

I’ve seen threads that have clearly been reported multiple times (by absolute misery arses as there were no problems with them), and mn have put a notice up saying something like ‘we’re leaving this up as we’ve got no evidence to suggest this isn’t genuine at this time’. Unless a post is really offensive or something, I don’t get why they can’t do the opposite and say something like ‘this is probably a troll, up to if you want to risk your time engaging’.

Bloomingdaffs · 19/02/2024 17:46

You think MN should leave troll threads up?

Yes. Troll threads used to make this place fun. You could have a laugh and take the piss out of each other. Now it’s just serious and all the piss taking has turned nasty. A lot of time it’s obvious it’s a troll. We’re all grown ups here and can decide for ourselves which threads to comment on

Bluewallss · 19/02/2024 17:57

There was an AMA with a physician associate deleted a few months back yet which pissed me off. The discussion was very interesting but overall critical of OP so they asked for it to be deleted.

Why not just accept the discussion around your own job role? Surely it makes you a better practitioner to understand different perspectives about your scope.

Itscatsallthewaydown · 19/02/2024 18:00

Nah, I like it that MN are happy to delete bullshit threads. One of the best things about this site.

porridgeisbae · 19/02/2024 18:04

@Haydenn There are loads of fake threads on here. Usually if a thread's deleted it's because it's fake. If anything, MN leave too many complete lie threads standing for too long.

ARMSDOWN · 19/02/2024 18:06

I do think that mumsnet should always delete posts when the OP asks them to. People can post in a panic then realise they've put identifying information, or just don't want their personal stuff online as a reminder.

Annoying when they just 'look behind the scenes' then never update.

ApisGuard · 19/02/2024 18:46

@Haydenn if you have talk settings on to read the full thread on the google browser you can click the download option to save the thread or similar if on pc

YourMommaWasASnowblower · 19/02/2024 18:46

My favourite deletion message though was a thread where I can’t remember the content, but they used the final reply the thread received as a reason for its deletion which was ‘did ya aye’ 😂.

ApisGuard · 19/02/2024 18:47

sometimes ive been reading threads and i think at times even if it does not break the chat rules but causes a fuss it gets pulled as not all admins think the same etc

to be honest it would be better if there was a more detailed chat guidelines

Pegasusforme · 19/02/2024 18:48

Doesn’t bother me at all because I have a life outside Mumsnet posts!

ApisGuard · 19/02/2024 18:49

one does remember the bison and the water serpents

Some of the threads I was contributing to and their reasons (in the past week or so)

This thread has been deleted
We've taken this thread down while we take a quick look behind the scenes.

This thread has been deleted
This thread has been withdrawn by MNHQ at the request of its author.

This thread has been deleted
This has been deleted by MNHQ for breaking our Talk Guidelines. Previously banned poster.

This thread has been deleted
Hi all,
We are removing this thread now. A strong reminder that troll-hunting is against the guidelines that govern the use of our site. If posters have concerns, report them and hide the thread if necessary.

This thread has been deleted
We've removed this thread - we have some concerns about the OP.

This thread has been deleted
This has been deleted by MNHQ for breaking our Talk Guidelines.

This thread has been hidden until the MNHQ team can have a look at it.

Of all your deletion messages @Hoplolly the ones that frustrate the most are the twee coy ones that give the impression that a further update will be given, but it doesn't happen, eg:

We've taken this thread down while we take a quick look behind the scenes.

This thread has been hidden until the MNHQ team can have a look at it.

these deletion messages are platitudes. I wouldn't have a problem in principle but not updating once HQ has taken a look behind the scenes is an important part of their commitment that isn't fulfilled. The deletion message should say:

This thread is on hold and we will issue an update within 48 hrs.

then the update is either

the OP is not who they say they are so we are deleting their thread
the OP has deregged so we are deleting their thread
the OP is fine and we are reactivating their thread.

at least treat us like intelligent people, HQ!

Bloomingdaffs · 19/02/2024 19:30

That's because you are a troll.

I suppose the issue is that people would need to see that message, and if they didn’t, then they wouldn’t know, and they’d carry on opening their heart and feeding the troll.
