To wonder what posh Mums cook for dinner…

I have just seen Pippa Middleton’s bikini photos on the DM. Three different bikinis so far, washboard abs & nothing jiggles as she chases three kids. She could easily pass as a fibreglass mannequin. I’m wondering why it is that the Middleton women and affluent women (even middle class at my child’s school), always seem to be so impossibly slim. I struggle with my weight and I would love to see the groceries, fridge contents, packed lunchboxes and dinner plans of the other half. Obviously I know what healthy eating and cooking is but, the bodies of Mothers these days is next level. Why am I struggling to keep my tummy from flopping out while women in their 40’s pull off wearing linen mini shorts (not in UK) and high waisted jeans.

It's a bit odd to mock people who like healthy food, and look after their health

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 19/02/2024 11:22

@ChilliPB I want your life Grin

There are some really nasty comments on this thread. So easy to take a swipe at a "skinny girl". It's horrible to be on the receiving end .

GrouchyKiwi · 19/02/2024 11:27

I'm 40ish, slim but not toned (so I don't look like Pippa etc) and I do eat whatever I want. I also have a relatively sedentary lifestyle for health reasons, though having a spread-out house helps with movement.. However, I recently realised that I generally only have two meals a day - I don't feel like eating first thing in the morning so tend to have a late breakfast, which then means no lunch. I cook everything from scratch (apart from the occasional freezer fish & chips when I'm too tired to cook), and make my own bread. I limit UPF - though we still have biscuits, chocolate, sweets, etc. I don't drink as much wine as I used to after working out I was basically a functional alcoholic, so that has made a difference. And genetically I have help too, as one side of my family is very tall and slim.

People like Pippa eat well-balanced, nutritious meals with plenty of protein and fresh vegetables, and then exercise a lot. She's clearly very toned and healthy.

‘A quality croissant’ is peak mumsnet

Do tell, I am also invested in quality croissants. Now I’m worried the frozen ones I like from the supermarkets aren’t doing me justice.

shearwater2 · 19/02/2024 11:32

I like croissants but avoid them almost completely or any sort of "cake for breakfast" idea, I find them completely empty calories and unsatisfying. They even seem make to me feel quite grumpy. Probably as I've just eaten loads of calories and yet still feel hungry.

Not because I'm having anything posh in its place, but an egg butty is so much more satisfying.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 19/02/2024 11:32

I'm in the east mids and a local coffee shop gets their almond croissants from Hambleton Hall Bakery and they are incredible. Definitely a quality croissant and absolutely qualify for your once weekly pastry.

It's possible to enjoy "naughty" treats just choose better quality and have less of it.

God I love an egg butty

It’s fine being on the receiving end. Doesn’t bother me at all.

YouJustDoYou · 19/02/2024 11:33

There's one of those mums in my son's class - she once boasted how she only eats salads, never drinks alcohol, and exercises daily. It's possible to be that thin, you just don't really eat.

Elphame · 19/02/2024 11:35

If there's a choice of a fruit or plain yoghurt I always choose plain as it's less likely to have sweeteners and flavourings in it. I won't eat anything that is an artificial colour. I won't eat cereals as most of them have crap in them. I cook plain organic porridge oats and put fruit on top. All my dinners are cooked from scratch. I'll rarely buy anything ready made (only if desperate and then will opt for something with minimal ingredients and processing). I eat quality organic butter but not margarine which is full of rubbish. I buy quality cheese but won't touch the rubbery supermarket stuff. Organic free range eggs. Lots of vegetables. Quality bread that is just wheat, salt and yeast. Etc etc

This is pretty much what I do. I'm convinced that the UPF do us no favours and lead to people consuming far more calories than they actually need.

We try and eat seasonally as much as possible so we really enjoy the fresh local produce rather than the out of season imports that aren't particularly nutritious and don't taste very exciting either. I stopped using Riverford for veg when they sent me podded peas in Feb all the way from the Med. They were tasteless, starchy and had far to many food miles behind them.

I buy cheese from our local producers and have an organic veg box from a local farm co -operative delivered weekly. Eggs come from the same source. I've been vegetarian for many many years too.

At least you're honest 😂

I do find the reverse tiresome!

The Middleton sisters clearly have good genes, but Pippa has always been really into exercise. Like already said by a pp, she's got great tone and definition so clearly does weight lifting and there have been countless pap photos of her running both before and after children.

I vaguely remember her doing some ultra event with their brother (maybe cycling) so it seems like exercise/sports is a massive part of her life - far beyond the average person. She probably eats very well too but once you've got the kind of muscle mass she has, it'll be easier to keep a good figure if you have the odd off day.

Of course she probably has a chef and nanny's etc which all helps, and yes she's got good genes but she has, since she has been in the public eye, been known to be heavily into exercise so sounds like she has also worked hard to look as she does.

No money in the world would give me that figure -my riches would go on cake and wine so fair play to her

Namechange1253467 · 19/02/2024 11:41

How often do you people have "pudding" with dinner?

ItsAllAboutTheDosh · 19/02/2024 11:42

She has not got good genes. Her legs are relatively short for her torso. Long legs are closely linked to good genes and health.
She has time to exercise and has been brought up to value looks in women over everything else. It is as simple as that. Anyone could be that thin with muscle and definition if they had the time to make it happen and valued how they look above everything else.

I used to be super skinny with no effort. Then I met DH and we went from spending a little time together to a lot, and I ended up doing most of the cooking as he wasn’t very good at it (he would do all the washing up which was great for me as I’d much prefer to cook than to do the washing up - there was no dishwasher!).
However my dad died unexpectedly after a few years and I realised I had nothing smart that fitted to go to his funeral - and my weight has crept up and up and up ever since :(
I also realised that I used to make whatever I fancied to eat - wasn’t ever big into potatoes but would occasionally buy a bag of baby anew Jersey Royals as a treat. And I’d often do a big stir fry out chicken with a nice creamy sauce. And some veg. But turns out that although dh (as he now is) says he eats everything, which he does, he also loves potatoes (especially roast or chips) and more traditional meals of meat and veg and potatoes. And me being young and in love tried to make things he liked as I was a good cook, even thought they weren’t the sort of things I’d usually make for me, and he wasn’t keen on my random ‘see what I fancy from the supermarket’ approach to cooking, instead wanting to be organised with a ‘proper’ meal, so over the years I stopped making ‘my’ meals and made many more of ‘his’ type of meals- and my weight had ballooned as a consequence.
And then the dc came along and it turned out they weren’t so into eating the ‘odd’ stuff I liked and dh didn’t, so I’ve just made more and more of the ‘normal’ —bland— stuff…

TheKeatingFive · 19/02/2024 11:48

I expect Pippa eats very carefully. And I don't see anything wrong with that. She's obviously into fitness and having a certain type of physique and that's more important to her than pizza and wine. Each to their own.

Sleepysleepasap · 19/02/2024 11:50

Being very slim once you get to a certain age is quite ageing. I have definitely suddenly got more wrinkles and scraggy neck after loosing weight !

Yes...my dh always wants a "proper" meal. If it were just me, I'd happily have a pitta bread and some hummus for dinner.

Whatsthisallnow · 19/02/2024 11:52

I eat what I want , prob around the recommended 2000 calories a day I think. Always been size 8/10 around 9 stone and my height is 5’10 I think some people it’s just their metabolism? I do up to 2 hrs walking a day just because of nursery and school pick ups etc . I’ve never ever eaten in the evenings after 6 pm though but that’s because I have a medical issue since childhood so never have

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 19/02/2024 11:52

catscalledbeanz · 19/02/2024 03:32

I used to be a private chef for a minor royal family. it was steamed chicken or fish and veg , fruit and youghurt 98% of the time. The women are tiny portions too. 2% it was feasting.

I knew it! I came in to say "I bet it's steamed fish and veg"

Viohh · 19/02/2024 11:52

How do women exercise on such little calories?

I’ve had bouts of anorexia in the past (one summer I only ate one meal a week over the course of three months).

I could barely stand. And when I would go on very long walks the first mile or so would be torture. No way would I have been able to do strength training

Naillig222 · 19/02/2024 11:55

Pippa isn't just slim. She is extremely muscular.
Despite the claims of many here, I doubt many (if any) look like Pippa purely from genetics/healthy eating without exercising. Slim, yes. But not ripped like that.
Pippa obviously does have genetics on her side but there's work involved in a physique like that. Made easier by having nannies, chefs etc, of course. But she won't be just eating nothing and walking 10k steps!

wincarwoo · 19/02/2024 11:56

She will know how to eat or have a chef that will. She will count her macros according to her energy expenditure.

She will need carbs to support that level of fitness.

Plenty of women (and men) doing Joe Wicks have bodies like hers and they are older.
