to think that 6000 per month is excessive for the government to take off my pay for tax?

Surely there should be a maximum limit that each person has to pay as tax? Six grand per month in tax is just excessive imo. And that is before NI contributions etc. If the government set a maximum tax limit they would take more care over how they spent their central funds. And I wouldn't have to work so many hours away from my DCs only to have 72 bloody grand a year taken off my income to fund their mis-spending.

you get taxed my YEARLY salary. I work every day in the evening because i can't afford childcare but have to work. I would like to be taxed the amount you are being taxed as it would mean that I could afford some of the finer things in life.

Twiglett · 23/03/2008 19:57

working in excess of 100 hours a week and having children is also rather morally bankrupt IMO (and I would say the same be you man or woman)

tootaxed · 23/03/2008 19:58

Twig - I am not fortunate. I have worked hard all my life through studying, going straight into a good career and then working my bollocks off. I then suffered a family tragedy which means I am left with just me and my DCs and me having to work. I truly do appreciate that I should help others worse off than me - in fact I tithe to the church and always have done. I am much happier about 10% of my salary being spent by them on the needy. It is just the government taking so much and then spending it so appallingly that has riled me.
Sorry - but it has been a bad week. DD has had a much needed operation cancelled for the 3rd time and I am fed up. I wouldnt begrudge my money being taken if it was spent better by the government

Bloody hell & you opened your pay slip & cried

Feck knows what you would do if you opened my dp's wage slip maybe die?

camillathechicken · 23/03/2008 19:58

there is plenty of tax avoidance going on at huge corporate level no doubt, that means the we do get taxed too much for the governments supidity, the money has to come from somewhere, but if you earn £150 000 or thereabuots p.a, then thems the breaks.

Jane68 · 23/03/2008 19:59

You are in a very priveledged mess of your own making and you want sympathy, this is what you get for putting money before anything else.

JodieG1 · 23/03/2008 19:59

I agree on the 100 hour working week Twig.

Lauriefairycake · 23/03/2008 19:59

you're wrong, you clearly earn enough to pay this tax or you wouldn't be paying it

this country has one of the lowest tax levels proportionally in Europe

I think people should pay more tax

Hope you're doing a useful job and enjoying it, try not focusing on the money and instead focus on life - a life focused on money and acquisition leads to selfishness and arrogance.

oregonianabroad · 23/03/2008 20:00

The government's spending is a separate issue, JodieG. If you are wound up about that, try taking political action -- email your MP.

I wouldn't call schools, roads, rubbish collection, etc... 'nothing', even if I do agree that they are frequently mismanaged.

sorkycake · 23/03/2008 20:00

Actually I rescind my earlier post, YANBU, you are however being rather tactless imho.

Yes paying tax is crap for everyone, but it's a necessity.

It comes down to priorities really. Some choose to work less and receive less pay, others work all the hours and get oodles of cash. Neither way is right/wrong, it's about the choices we make.

People will employ you regardless of over qualifications when it's clear that the reasons you are applying are to simplify your life, people get that these days.

ingles2 · 23/03/2008 20:00

Aah tootaxed I'm sorry you have had a hard week. I think the way you phrased this thread was inevitable that you were going to rile people. I think NorthernLurkers right, have an early night and look after yourself.

Twiglett · 23/03/2008 20:00

JOdie .. people who work far harder can earn far less you know ... it's not the equivalent of putting in more time and effort, it's not even talent that gets people in these high paid jobs .. a lot of it is being in the right place at the right time and sheer bloody luck

And I say this as someone who worked bloody hard and was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time when it came to the possibility of promotion / job changes

I was intelligent, hard-working, skilled and talented and bloody lucky

ShinyDysonHereICome · 23/03/2008 20:01

Hmmmmm you must still take home around £9-10k a MONTH which is more than a lot of people do in a year so I have little sympathy for you.

None, in fact.

GreatAuntieWurly · 23/03/2008 20:01

Do you live from one pay packet to the other?? Do you go without dinner so that your dc eat?? Nah didnt think so.

camillathechicken · 23/03/2008 20:02

am sorry you have had a crapola week, but if you ask AUBU about tax, and you earn a lot of money, the answer was glaringly obvious. i hope your DD gets her op very soon.

Lauriefairycake · 23/03/2008 20:02

you can also maybe afford to pay for better health care - even though we have a fantastic nhs, it is fairly stretched at the moment in some areas.

JodieG1 · 23/03/2008 20:02

The government do waste money on every level. My father was telling me recently about a job he saw being advertised looking for people to give opinions on various things and would cost about a huge amount, I can't quite remember the amount but was in the hundreds of thousands mark. Every year.

The amount mps are paid and then their expenses and trips abroad, also a waste. Where does it end?

NorthernLurker · 23/03/2008 20:02

Twotaxed - good for you with the 10% . It must be very hard for you to be alone with your family as you are - but you must see that you are in a financially advantageous position - perhaps for your peace of mind you should concentrate on feeling good about what you can provide rather than angry about what the government does with your money?

Twiglett · 23/03/2008 20:02

sorry .. you earn 8K and don't have private health insurance???

llareggub · 23/03/2008 20:02

tootaxed, I think you are missing the point. You are are taxed proportionately, the same as I am taxed. Isn't that reasonable? Why should you pay proportionately less tax that I do? I'm sorry you've had a bad week though.

oregonianabroad · 23/03/2008 20:03

Yes, indeed, what sort of job do you do, tootaxed?

Sheltering the homeless? Supporting women in abusive relationships? Training disabled people to do new jobs?

How the hell do you expect her to pay for Private health care when she is taxed £6k a month???

JodieG1 · 23/03/2008 20:04

Twiglet I know people can work hard for a lot less, that wasn't what I meant. I just find it questionable for anyone to be taxed that much per sey.

I have lots of issues regarding taxation that aren't related to this particular poster anyway.

I don't think the 10p tax should have been scrapped either.

If the government didn't spend money like water then we wouldn't need to be taxed so much, any of us.

CatIsSleepy · 23/03/2008 20:04

we pay tax for a reason, it's not spent on 'nothing'
and plenty of people work very hard and don't take home a 6-figure salary
ultimately if we want decent public services we have to pay tax
