to not want people to buy easter eggs for my DC's?

They had in total 7 Easter eggs each. I really don't want my DC's scoffing loads of chocolate and I won't eat it. Do you think it would be rude of me to ask (next year), for people to either not buy anything at all or buy something else? Such as clothes or a toy?

My DS who is 3.5 months old was given an Easter egg!

My DD asked for porridge when she got home from nursery today (???) and then spied the chocolate egg. So I gave her chocolate flavoured porridge as a BIG treat for her, and made it clear that she can never have this for breakfast! Seemed to work OK. I agree though it is difficult when they are given things that you don;t agree with. I think depending on how easily the person if offended as to whether you could ask for an alternative or even just to nicely say that they really need not buy an Easter gift. Good luck!!

PrincessPeaHead · 25/03/2008 20:36

carmen that is the difference between us. You think it is lovely that the pensioner should buy your kids eggs, I'm horrified that she should waste her money on stuff my kids neither need nor, particularly, want. She'd be much better off putting the cash towards her fuel bill frankly

Oliveoil · 25/03/2008 20:46

dd1 and dd2 get on egg each from us (plus the chocolate eggs that trail down the stairs from their rooms)

eggs from my sister and my mum and dad
eggs from school and playgroup
huge mound of creme eggs etc from dh's relatives
money from inlaws
hair bobbles etc from other relatives

all in all, far too much

I have tried and failed to stem the tide, but to no avail

so we keep all the hair bobbles (and money obv!), eat a tiny bit of choc, the rest gets put in the cupboard and then I take it into work when they have forgotten about it

ladymariner · 25/03/2008 20:48

pph, its not up to you to tell someone how to spend their money, especially when they're actually doing what they consider to be a very kind thing and something that they think the child will enjoy!
my ds recieved several eggs from older people and was extremely pleased about it. He then spent a short time tonight writing them each a thankyou note which they in turn will be pleased to receive. He wrote these whilst chomping on one of the aforementioned eggs!!! It may not be how you would do things but it most certainly does not make it wrong!
Incidentally, how patronising to suggest putting the money towards a fuel bill!

carmenelectra · 25/03/2008 20:56

PPH you cant change people if they want to buy your children a present. Look, i am not over the moon when ds1 gets loads of eggs(though it isnt that many)just cos it is rather a lot of chocolate and ive nowhere to put it?

He just has a bit of what he fancies each day till its gone. He hasnt had any today actually, thats how bothered he is(because we havent made it an issue thats why)and we have been park and swimming.

I usually buy some chocolate very wk when i do my big shop. Sadly, its the cheap confectionery rubbish that everyone hates. Dont know why its only fashionable these days to eat Green & Blacks or whatever. Im sure people just pretend to like it cos its trendy. Anyway, i usually buy some choc each wk, mini Twix, Kit kat or whatever and ds1 and DP have them, but with all the eggs it just means i wont buy anything till they run out cos we have more than enough treats in the house. So for me, there is no problem

Lady did you do your trifle?LOL Dp hd just ate last bit. I had a cupcake for 'pudding' tonight! i dont usually eat puddings except for weekends. Just using stuff up, of course.

carmenelectra · 25/03/2008 21:02

Yes, very patronising about the fuel bill. She is only 'just' a pensioner and prob has more money thamn me!LOL

Weve been friends with her daughter since kids so she always buys mine and my sisters kids presents(not just eggs- a toy at Xmas) She came from a very different generation, one where an egg would be appreciated( and still is by us) and if i asked for a donation of something else or gave them away i think she'd wonder why id suddenly become an ungrateful cow and was acting like her gifts werent good enough.

ladymariner · 25/03/2008 21:02

carmen, I'm on a roll, and its fab, I'm off the leash! I've not only made a trifle but I've also made the thing my mum used to make where you nearly set a pineapple jelly then when its still a bit slushy you add a tin of crushed pineapple and a tin of condensed milk then whisk it all up together and bung it back in the fridge to set - yummy in the extreme
And when nothing fits me anymore I shall say you're a bad influence but it's ok cos it's Easter!!!!

carmenelectra · 25/03/2008 21:10

Lol

i grasp onto the fact for days on end that there has been a Bank hol as an excuse to overindulge!

Christmas clearly lasts from the first wk in Dec when the tree goes up to well into the new year. Ha ha.

With me, though, its usually alcohol. Its ok to have a drink cos it Bank holiday Monday, weekend, bank holiday Tuesday. Whoops, weekend's here again before you know it

ladymariner · 25/03/2008 21:21

We're going out on a girlie night on Friday and I can't wait, we havnt been out since before Christmas so plans are afoot to tie one on in a big way Last time we found a bar selling vodka shots so we made it our mission to sample them, all in the interests of science, dontcha know!!! Raspberry ones were very nice, but the Creme Egg one was my favourite!

carmenelectra · 25/03/2008 21:26

Sounds good! No offence though, id lay off all that grub if i were you or your clothes wont fit/no room for alcohol or you'll betoo full to get drunk

cocolepew · 25/03/2008 21:39

I would have been grateful that "random people" took the trouble to buy my children eggs in the first place, FFS it's only bloody chocolate, not poison.

ladymariner · 25/03/2008 21:43

Yeah, you're right but i'm sure the gannets in this house can help me finish it all off, ds has friends with bottomless pits for stomachs!!!

AbbeyA · 25/03/2008 21:51

Surprised to find this still running! I don't know why any mention of the elderly immediately assumes that they are hard up! When I am elderly I might well get pleasure in buying an egg for a child. If people are kind enough to give them as a present it is gracious to accept them in a similar spirit.
Nobody has answered my question from way back as to what the 'crap' chocolate is that they don't want to even have in their cupboard?

nappyaddict · 26/03/2008 01:39

You know what I think is bizarre? People who buy full grown adults easter eggs. Ok maybe it's fair enough if it is your DP but my friend buys easter eggs for her sister (who is 24), sisters dp, her mum and dad and her grandparents. It wouldn't ever occur to me to buy anyone other than a child an easter egg tbh.

carmenelectra · 26/03/2008 14:36

Yeah abbey, id like to know what crap chocolate is too.

Id hazard a guess its Cadbury,Nestle etc!. The stuff that a lot of people wont feed their kids, but secretly eat themselves.

Like i said yesterday, its suddenly only acceptable to eat Green & bLACKS OR THE LIKE, even if you dont like the taste.

AbbeyA · 26/03/2008 19:04

This is what I think carmenelectra but no one will say so! Green and Black etc is a very adult taste, I like it but I much preferred Cadbury's as a child.I think a snobbish element has crept in! I belong to a group that did a tasting session with choc and the overall favourite (not mine) was Cadbury's dairy milk-and this was a very intelligent, middle class group of women.

ladymariner · 26/03/2008 20:24

That'll be me then!!!!
Evening all
xxx

carmenelectra · 26/03/2008 21:16

Oh well, we will just have to conclude that the three of us are right then!

nappyaddict · 28/03/2008 13:25

so cadbury's and nestle is deemed crap. what about galaxy or mars? i'm quite partial to a nice bar of galaxy mmmm

carmenelectra · 28/03/2008 16:02

Im guessing they are considered to be crap too

AbbeyA · 28/03/2008 16:58

No one has come on to say that their DC can't eat typical British chocolate!

AbbeyA · 28/03/2008 17:00

Sorry-I intended to say that they don't allow them to eat typical British chocolate.

carmenelectra · 28/03/2008 17:55

No still waiting abbey
