I'm sorry, I'm grumpy.
It's everywhere.
The top level at work are now using it. They have English degrees.

It was contagious on The Traitors round table! Argh! Make it stop.

If I ever go on The Traitors and get chosen as a Traitor then I solemnly swear that a Faithful who refers to themself as myself will be speedily dispatched.

I like to think that I am not alone…..

Thementalloadisreal · 16/02/2024 13:56

This is one of the main reasons I had to stop watching The Apprentice.

You’d become a national treasure!

mushypeas94 · 16/02/2024 14:40

It's perfectly correct in Hiberno-English. It's a direct translation from the Irish language. Maybe those people you quite are Irish?

Oneearringlost · 16/02/2024 14:42

It's like 'You' is a dirty word.
A bit like 'Me', so many people use 'I' when it should be 'me'.

honeylulu · 16/02/2024 14:48

@Oneearringlost Yes, when I discussed the issue with a junior team member he said he'd do his best but it just didn't come naturally to say "you" instead of "yourself" as the latter felt more polite. He said plain old "you" felt like it was verging on "Oi, you!"

If that's true then a lot of people must find me very rude!

Orangestheonlyfruit · 16/02/2024 14:59

Garlickit · 16/02/2024 05:19

While we're at it, can we also kill "Fred and I" when it should be "and me"? Sometimes we even get "Fred and I's thing", which is piling insanity upon abomination!

Some people think that it's more polite to say 'Fred and I'. Incorrectly of course.

PedantScorner · 16/02/2024 15:13

@Orangestheonlyfruit , it is more polite to say 'Fred and I...' than to say 'I and Fred...'.
'Me and Fred...' is incorrect as is 'Myself and Fred...'

Saying something like 'It happened to Fred and I' is incorrect, as is 'It happened to Fred and myself'.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 16/02/2024 15:30

The other one that kills me (not as much as ‘myself and John’ though) is ‘Can you just take a minute and speak to that?’ This is an American podcast interview ‘thing’. I’m American. As far as I am aware, we speak about something. We speak to an object: a human, a dog, a cat. I even sing to my pets. But I’m going to speak ABOUT (not to! NOT to! About!) religious conflict in the Age of Enlightenment.
No I won’t ‘speak to that’, Oprah and Lex Fridman. I will speak about that.
I’m off on an angry dog walk now.
<someone will come along and tell me I’m wrong>

You're not wrong.

Garlickit · 16/02/2024 17:33

@Itwasafterallallaboutme, your examples are all correct 🙂

Fofftwenty21 · 16/02/2024 17:53

I noticed on The Traitors they kept saying "I'm voting for yourself" rather than you.

BeaRF75 · 16/02/2024 18:03

I agree, OP. Even people in very good jobs do it - I wonder whether they think it makes them look smart? Obviously, it does the exact opposite and makes me wince every time.

Theedgeoftheabyss · 16/02/2024 20:50

What about the absence of a t sound in words like water? It seems to be disappearing. And people sound so sloppy when saying war-er. Whatever happened to pronunciation?

That's called accent. Nothing wrong with it.

XenoBitch · 16/02/2024 21:52

I say 'Me and xyz'. Probably incorrect. I don't care. It sounds jarring and weird to me the other way around.

niadainud · 16/02/2024 21:56

iceskater1 · 16/02/2024 05:26

This depends where it is in the sentence.

"Fred and I went to the shops" is grammatically correct.
"Fred and me went to the shops" is not.

"Jen went to the shops with Fred and me/ myself" is grammatically correct.
"Jen went to the shops with Fred and I" is not.

Take Fred out of the equation and you can easily see why:

"I went to the shops" vs "me went to the shops"
"Jen went to the shops with me"/ "Jen went to the shops with I"

"Jen went to the shops with Fred and me" is fine, but "Jen went to the shops with Fred and myself" is most emphatically NOT correct.

When you would ever say, "Jen went to the shops with myself"?

PedantScorner · 16/02/2024 21:57

@XenoBitch , the rule is Remove the other person (and change the verb if necessary); does it sound OK.

Me and DH went out.
becomes
Me went out.

DH and I went out.
becomes
I went out.

You might not care, but others might.

"Yeah" is another irritation.

Is it really?

TheShellBeach · 16/02/2024 22:21

Theedgeoftheabyss · 16/02/2024 22:14

No, it isn't accent. It's called a glottal stop.

ColleenDonaghy · 16/02/2024 22:35

TheShellBeach · 16/02/2024 22:21

No, it isn't accent. It's called a glottal stop.

And the glottal stop is a feature of some accents and not a feature in others.
