daughter was asked to leave homebase because she's under 18?

My daughter and her friend (both 15) went shopping yesterday and nipped into Homebase as my daughter wanted a plant and her friend wanted a heated blanket. They were approached by a member of staff who said “what age are you both you don’t look old enough to be in here” they replied 15. The member of staff asked them to leave as you need to be 18 to shop. My daughter is very straight forward and says how it is, she told the member of staff no as that is not true. The girls continued to walk around the store and they were followed by this lady who works there. They got to the till and paid with no issues the employee at the till didn’t mention age. My daughter told me this when she got home and explained the employee was rude and followed them around the store as well as giving them “dirty looks” I rung the store today to speak to a manager as that customer service is not okay. He told me you do infact need to be with an adult 18+ to shop. Is this serious? I can’t find anything on the website.

No we haven’t. What’s been established is that head office says there’s no general u- 18s policy but the manager confirmed to the OP that in that store there is. The manager can presumably do what they like that’s in the interests of the store.

It’s not too hard to imagine a likely conversation:

”We’ve had a complaint that you ban unaccompanied children from the store. Why?”

”Because there’s been a lot of trouble locally with teens sniffing glue and spraying graffiti. The local copper asked us to be extra vigilant. So I ask the staff to chuck out teens who come in on their own.”

”OK, fair enough. I’ll let the boss know.”

You should write soap operas. For actual soap. Because alkaline bath products are possible the only - sentient or otherwise - things that could patronise an entire universe by saying: "I'll let the boss know." Have a lovely evening.

Not enough children stand up for themselves . People accusing Lass of being rude annoys me ... You were not there , you have no idea . Plenty of adults are outrageously rude to children and expect them to put up with that sort of shit. Children should be given the self confidence to stand up for themselves. Children who are too complaint get abused physically and mentally

I can't get my head around this.

So they just walked off and instead of calling security, the lady followed them all round the store giving them dirty looks, saw them go to the till, and didn't bother telling the cashier they were underage.

Is that right?

I suspect what happened is the staff member knew that children should only be accompanied in store because there are a lot of restricted and dangerous products in a DIY store, so decided to accompany them by following them as they refused to leave.

If I was a shop assistant asking a customer to leave the store and was ignored I'd be a bit pissed off too tbh. Especially by a teenager who seemed to think they knew the rules better than me when I actually worked there!

Shops can refuse entry to anyone they don't want to be in there (as long as it's not discrimination) so she should have just left tbh. She should not have argued with the assistant and refused to leave. Another appropriate response would be to ask for the assistant to get their supervisor/manager if she thought what was being said was incorrect. To ignore her and just remain in the store was very rude and entitled behaviour.

That is a massive leap! OP has barely been involved in this thread. It's nutters like me getting a bee in our bonnets about the ridiculous, unfounded conclusions people were leaping to that have turned it into the weird, entertaining monster you see before you. Your comment is totally unnecessary.

Say what now? You've done a course in "dressing up assertiveness" and now you're an expert in the parenting of parents and children you've never met? Are you on glue?

Jellykat · 16/02/2024 22:37

Wow @Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain you've deduced the OPs DD is stroppy, entitled and possibly messing about or even shoplifting, based on 'a course' you once did and OPs posts? .. Talk about tarring all youngsters with the same brush!

I'm surprised the member of staff didnt call in the police with such a monster in the shop! Hmm

You get me a psych assessment. I'll get you a haircut. It's a a bit unkempt and wiry right now, isn't it? I understand getting it cut might be a bold step. But give it a brush, maybe? Put some day clothes on? Go to Homebase?

Yep - Somebody’s been on the wine.. It’s Friday night, have an evening off tormenting other people on MN and enjoy it.. You’re embarrassing yourself with these bizarre comments

Some very classy language there OP. Obviously your own lack of manners is rubbing off on your DD!

Yeah yeah yeah. See your comment right there is where I see where your daughter got her manners or lack thereof from.

And you still believe your daughter over a member of staff in a store? I dare you to go and challenge them yourself. See how quickly you get thrown out on your arse.

I’m out of this thread as half the posters think your daughter was treated badly and the other half like me have seen or had to witness too many times young women like your daughter.

I do apologise if I offended you though and I can see why you’re going full Tiger mother at me as no one likes criticisms of their crotch goblins.

Exactly what I just said! I think we are in a parallel universe sometimes and yes I don’t think I’ve covered myself in glory on this thread either.

I'm not reading 24 pages of comments, so if this has been said before, I apologise....

If the store didn't allow under 18s, then there should be a big notice on the front door.

Supermarkets sell age restricted products, in exactly the same way as any hardware store would.
So, are under 18s banned from entering supermarkets? No, the age restricted items require an age check be done by a member of staff, which I assume would be the same in the DIY store.

If I were in the same position as the OP, I would have contacted the store, just as she did. Staff need additional proper training if they are going to interact with customers.
In the case of these two girls, the staff member could have kept a discreet eye on them (in case she suspected them of being potential shoplifters), and only interacted with them if she saw them so something wrong.

As I said I’m off this thread. Enjoy your daughter’s lies or whatever they are. She’ll come unstuck one day. Don’t need sarky kisses etc from you sweet cheeks!

It seems like OPs daughter was the most mature person on the whole thread 🙄
