How recent was this conversion OP? In the last week or so?

Girl Defined being held up as someone to emulate is awful.

Yup. You're a heathen if you don't believe Genesis is literal.

Nope. You're not alone.

I raise my hands in praise and worship, speak in tongues and have seen a friend's physical healing of a long standing disability.

Awesome.

Nevee mind all the biblical stuff OP @porridgeisbaedid you get yer hair sorted

@Gatekeeper Yes thanks :) https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/5005883-lipstick-recommendations-for-dark-golden-blonde-hair-and-pale-skin?reply=133042060 A lot of it broke off though when it was bleached so I'll grow it a bit again now. I trimmed it a bit after I took this pic as the bottom bit was just frizz the hairdresser left to humour me.

I mean you’re super rude and that’s not the Christianity I know.

@Iwouldlikesomecake What've I said that's rude? If it takes me a while to reply to stuff, it's just because I have to feel up to it, been a bit off colour recently, plus I'm not as intellectual as y'all.

lipstick recommendations for dark golden blonde hair and pale skin? | Mumsnet

Any suggestions? I tend to like pinks. I like ones that are long lasting.

@systemthirtytwo - ah a follower looking for the right lifestyle to feel special/superior. I am related to one, exhausting. We’ve had Tarot, psychic healing, MLMs, straight up pyramid schemes not even trying to disguise themselves, crystals, C of E, and now evangelical Christianity. Unfortunately the last one seems to have stuck. I think I preferred the crystals, at least they were pretty. Funnily enough they look a bit like OP. Must be an archetype.

I read this as fundie in Furniture Village and thought you were talking about going in there just to eat a free cookie

Is there another reason people go there if it’s not for the free cookie? 😂

Tetsuo · 15/02/2024 11:32

As someone who was raised around religion and has seen the harm it's done;

It feels like people who see 'the book' (and I include all books here), as a template for life are not the brightest.

Do you never question religion and ask, why?

Why if there was an omnipotent being of some description, would he/she be so interested in the behaviour of people?

Surely if a godhead does exist, they're just some kind of deranged alien? What justification can you arrive at that makes sense of a variety of beings that have such an interest in us?

And if there is an omnipotent overseer, whose omnipotent overseer is the right one?

It's kind of bonkers isn't it?

porridgeisbae · 15/02/2024 11:33

Panjandrum123 · 15/02/2024 08:15

@porridgeisbae in theory I’m all for live and let live, what you’re doing isn’t harming me. Wear dresses if you wish but please don’t think men are our betters. And there’s a lot of misogyny in the ‘good book’. A lot of cruelty in the Old Testament. Other books are better.

I’m with Stephen Fry, if god really created everything then why are there so many awful creatures and illnesses out there (why did there need to be a parasitic worm that causes bilharzia)? Christianity takes the view that god gave us the Earth and everything in it to do with as we saw fit which isn’t working out too well. Bring back the pagan religions that said what you took from the earth you gave back, (only we don’t need ritual sacrifices of people or animals).

We're supposed to be stewards of the earth. If people aren't looking after it properly then they aren't acting biblically.

@PumpkinsAndCoconuts I just remember that the attention was all on the prettiness and OTTness of some of her dresses to me, not her figure. There was a lot of fru and flowers. The micro ones must just not have registered with me.

^I actually find the idea of born-again fundamental Christianity quite interesting, especially how it works with the OPs history of things like the occult.

I actually find the idea of born-again fundamental Christianity quite interesting, especially how it works with the OPs history of things like the occult. porridgeisbaewould you consider doing an AMA? would you consider doing an AMA?

@kittensinthekitchen I would but I'm a bit thick, can barely keep on top of this thread and people already think I'm an attention 'horse.' :) But feel free to ask any questions.

I have to say, OP, that one of my biggest fears in life is sitting on a plane or train next to someone like you! It happened to me in Toronto on a coach trip and I was pitied by every single of member of the coach. It was the longest journey I've ever had in my life.

@determinedtomakethiswork I don't tend to go on about it much IRL as no one wants to be hard work. I'll maybe sound people out with a passing comment to see if they're in the faith but that's as far as it goes.

People don't refer to their selves as fundies.

I was referring to the attitude that most MNers seem to have towards it.

Do you want to be besties with the duggars?

@Whoopaday Maybe Jill.

Do you follow “The transformed wife” for the gems she comes out with?

No but I keep meaning to. Thanks for the nudge. Will subscribe now. Smile

No way!

Pipsquiggle · 15/02/2024 11:42

Hi OP

How do you interpret the bible's teachings for the modern age? I'm guessing you don't take it all literally.

If you could give us an example e.g. "But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence."

Obviously the above is an example of the patrirachy and misogyny of the time so how do 'fundies' navigate that? I am guessing / hoping you ignore these kind of passages that are sexist / racist / homophobic etc

Eightfour · 15/02/2024 11:43

People there is no point asking OP deep religious questions. She hasn’t got a clue.

CreateHope · 15/02/2024 11:44

Ah @Cwtshcwtsh you are soooo welcome! Thank You God should be on every RE GCSE syllabus in the land 😄. The Pope Song is also worth a listen 😄.

oh and this one:

Not about religion but fucking funny 😄

Lullaby by Tim Minchin

Lullaby as performed on Ben Elton's Live from Planet Earth, featuring part of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

To the PP that was on a coach trip in Toronto, I don't suppose you detoured to the 'Christorama' outside Quebec did you?

I went there.

It was special.

CreateHope · 15/02/2024 11:46

@porridgeisbae i always love the idea that god gets all the credit for the good stuff (saving people from disaster, curing cancer, etc) but NEVER any of the blame for the bad. Man to have a job like that.

The ultimate bullshit religious cop out 🙄

Eightfour · 15/02/2024 11:47

@CreateHope @Cwtshcwtsh - I really like Not Perfect by him, it’s more sentimental than some of his other stuff, but I like the message of it. Also a bit fan of Storm, because there comes a point in everyone’s life they need to express themselves with a 9 minute beat poem.

Hagbard · 15/02/2024 11:48

Why not try out different religions for fun, people take all this shit too seriously. Fundie doesn't sound that fun, or tolerant though. I thoroughly recommend Discordianism 😀

Tetsuo · 15/02/2024 11:48

OP, what's you take on abortion and the rights of women when it comes to bodily autonomy?

Sadly a lot of fundamentalists absolutely belive and adhere to this.

StockpotSoup · 15/02/2024 11:51

As Alexei Sayle said, “You can’t spell ‘fundamentalist’ without ‘fun’. Or ‘mentalist’”.

porridgeisbae · 15/02/2024 11:52

Tessisme · 15/02/2024 10:50

Are you in NI @porridgeisbae? I was going to say you'd fit right in with, um, certain groups in our society - but thinking about it, all that belief in 'evolution and stuff' means you'd be an absolute pariah. You need more inflexibility of thinking. You might need a hat - ya know, for church. And then there's the compulsory evangelising.

This isn't just Fundamentalism. This is Northern Ireland Fundamentalism.

Always good to have a goal.

I'm not in NI but they do seem to know about religion.

I do hope it was the original Wicker Man and not the awful American re-make (which I refused to watch…LOVED the original) :)

@TheDogdidGood It was Sing-Along-A-Wickerman where they show the original film and everyone sings along to the songs. But I couldn't make it in the end. The 'remake'- nooooooo.

pray away the gay

@DreamVortex I was partly inspired to post by a poster who was claiming I believe in this. Have no point have I particularly said that as my main point. Another poster said she succeeded in praying and no longer having same sex attraction. I replied that it might work for some people (it did for her.)

All I've said is that I used to identify as bisexual. It's no longer an identity I have so I wouldn't say I am bisexual, because my identity is in Christ. I sometimes have occasional same sex attraction just as we all have all sorts of thoughts and feelings, but I try and choose not to act on it.

I am interested to know which era you ground your fundamentalism in. The earliest Christians were a revolutionary messianic sect within Judaism. Jesus was a Rabbi.

He was a rabbi in as much as that is a title that means a teacher in general. He didn't hold a role in the temple hierarchy.

I follow the Bible canon as it currently stands.

Surely all these ideas in the deutrocanonical literature ( dating from before the canon of the New Testament was closed ) should be fair game for fundamentalists? They are after all the original teachings of the early church?

A process was gone through to decide what was and wasn't included. There's enough to read in the Bible without having to add extra stuff. Smile

You’re the loon who tried to claim boys have to have short hair because it’s in the bible

Yes, it's in the Bible and as a Christian, I follow the Bible which is the Christian holy book. Nothing loony about that.

Bit pervy isn't it?

He created the whole human with all parts to serve a purpse. Only a pervy woman ( are you a man) can say this about The Creator.

Leviticus 19:27 - Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.

I also love you suggest there is an agreed upon canon with regards to the bible. Someone needs to tell all those different Christian denominations…
