If I was listening to music outside the house in 2002-2010 then what was I listening to it on?

There are some albums which came out around this time which I know track by track.
The way that I know every track makes me think I was listening to the albums on a device where I kept full albums, rather than streaming?
Would it have been an iPod sort of thing? I think it was too late to have a CD Walkman with me. But I have no recollection of what I would have had?

2002-2006ish almost definitely would have been an iPod. Phones started getting better for music after that so some people switched. I had my iPod for a long time after that though, I was very attached to it!

Brokenfurnitureandroses · 14/02/2024 06:30

A portable CD player at the start of that period. Then moving on to some sort of mp3 player maybe?

TheWayTheLightFalls · 14/02/2024 06:30

First generation iPod, then iPod Nano

ChocolateRat · 14/02/2024 06:31

Probably an mp3 player of some kind, maybe a minidisc player if you were a weirdo like me.

Tangled123 · 14/02/2024 06:36

I had a portable CD player at the start of that period. Then a small MP3 player that held a small selection of songs. I think iPods were already out then, but I didn’t get my first iPod (a Nano) until about 2007. I got a free Shuffle later, in about 2009, from my university too.

Projectme · 14/02/2024 06:36

Mp3 player then ipod.

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 14/02/2024 06:41

Yes, I had an mp3 player that held around 40 songs, do only marginally more than a cd with none of yhd convenience of changing it quickly. That was the first time I would load up my favourite songs rather than listening to a whole album.

I got that in 2004. Before that I still had my CD Walkman.

iPod! Loved my iPod!

TooMuchPinkyPonkJuice · 14/02/2024 06:43

Personally I had a minidisk player at the start of your timeline then an iPod touch towards the middle / end.

A kindred spirit 😍

I had a very chunky square mp3 player in around 2003/4 - can't remember the brand but not iPod, it was cheaper than that.

But I went to uni in 2000 and I definitely had my CD and tape player with me, I remember where it was in my room. So maybe you just listened to the albums at home?

morningafterglow · 14/02/2024 06:50

I didn't have an iPod at the start of that timeframe but I think the bigger ones were popular. I remember being able to listen to FM radio out and about via my mobile, still being on CDs at home, and then getting an iPod nano around 2005/6. Then using that non stop until getting first iPhone in 2010.

AlwaysFreezing · 14/02/2024 06:53

I've been going through my old bag of tech, trying to figure out what to do with it. My ipod was amongst it. I think I got it in 2006/7 judging by what's on there! I had a cd player in my car around then, but remember getting some sort of adapter so I could listen to my iPod in the car.

My mum had a big square non apple mp3 player, before the iPod. She always loved being ahead of the curve!

TwylaSands · 14/02/2024 06:54

I had an mp3 and then an ipod.

aramox1 · 14/02/2024 07:01

Portable Cd player around 2000, then ipod

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 14/02/2024 07:06

Radio?

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 14/02/2024 07:07

I had a Zen MP3 player and then an iPod classic.

SnapdragonToadflax · 14/02/2024 07:11

A Creative Zen, thank you @lifebeginsaftercoffee ! I had the big chunky white one. Although Wikipedia says they were released in 2004, so what on earth was I listening to music on going back and forth to uni in 2002/3? Maybe a portable CD player still?

IDontWantToBeAPieIDontLikeGravy · 14/02/2024 07:14

I had an iPod mini in 2005, and I wasn’t the first kid at school to have one so I guess you’d have had an original iPod, or one of the non-Apple mp3 players.

Mermaidsarereal · 14/02/2024 07:16

I had an mp3 player then an Ipod. Also used to play cds on a portable walkman with speakers plugged in

Slicedpeaches · 14/02/2024 07:17

I was a kid then, and had a pink mp3 player called a mix stick.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 14/02/2024 07:20

Before my Zen, I had a portable CD player that played CD's that could hold about seven albums at once @SnapdragonToadflax - I remember thinking I was so cool with the latest technology and then my best friend turned up with an iPod 😂

Same, I loved my mini disk :)

StamppotAndGravy · 14/02/2024 07:23

I had a CD player until about 2004, then a Sony MP3 equivalent that had a proprietary format. We used to buy 1 CD in our group and all copy them onto our MP3 players. I think most friends had those multi coloured ipods with the wheel, but itunes was really expensive because you had to buy to each album. Maybe you listened to full albums on that. Phones and Spotify had definitely taken over by 2014.

DeathMetalMum · 14/02/2024 07:27

Some sort of MP3 player. All of us had the small creative zen MP3 player in our family. Either me or my sister would have been the first I reckon about 2004/2005. However were never the first ones for getting tech stuff as we didn't have loads of spare money, often a few years behind the first to have that type of stuff. So I imagine you had some other type of mp3.

I did have a Walkman (tape) for Christmas when I was around 10? which would have been about 2000 but again they were at that point fairly cheap.
