To think dad should have stopped babies touching handrails on the tube and then sticking their hands in their mouth after?

Just that really? Saw a man holding his baby walking round the tube and letting the baby grab the rails etc and then just watching the child lick their hands after??

As a lifelong tube commuter I have seen people (blokes) scratching their arses or picking their noses and then casually grabbing the handrails.... to think a baby will be licking their hands after touching it horrifies me!

Would it be reasonable to have said something to the man?

You know that babies go to soft play/baby groups/nurseries with other babies, where there is plenty of arse scratching and nose picking? 😂

🤣

Mummy2mybear · 13/02/2024 10:16

This thread has made me laugh too 😂😂😂

Maray1967 · 13/02/2024 10:17

I’m relaxed about the germs thing, but my DM never let us put our mouths on or near the metal rails at the top of bus seat backs (the one in front if no one was sitting on the seat) as we saw some kids doing. She’d been on a bus once which braked suddenly and a child’s mouth which was almost on the metal slammed forward on to the metal - there was much blood and some broken teeth, apparently.

TheSnowyOwl · 13/02/2024 10:18

I can’t see how it’s any different to letting a child crawl, or press the button to cross the road, or move floors in the lift, or pretty much anything that’s shared with other people. Young children constantly put their hands in their mouths. Some of them also lick things.

araiwa · 13/02/2024 10:19

Thanks for your unsolicited advice random woman

Isn't that the usual mn response?

Thegoodbadandugly · 13/02/2024 10:23

It's how they build up immunity.

Enchanted86 · 13/02/2024 10:27

Public handrails give me the ick so i carry anti-bac' gel but in general children need germs to build antibodiea and boost their immune systems.

It would have been interfering and rude to approach him.

Talkamongstyourselves · 13/02/2024 10:27

As someone whose 10 month old managed to put an entire snail in her mouth, licking a handrail is not something that would bother me too much.

mondaytosunday · 13/02/2024 10:29

babies crawl all over and stick their hands in their mouths. Isn't it a thing now that kids aren't building up their immunity because people sterilise too much?

Eightfour · 13/02/2024 10:31

Do you have kids OP? You just get used to it after a while or you would never be able to take your baby out anywhere unless you tied them up.

@Cazpar exactly. On mumsnet if you point something bad out that other mumsnetters hadn't considered, instead of having an open mind and more awareness, they get all upset and triggered. It's hilarious how irate they get Grin

The excessive and inappropriate use of the word ‘triggered’ is so tedious to read.

Its quite ironic that you are the only one that seems upset, irate and triggered by this, but you seem to think everyone else is 😂

Yes this doesn't disprove the original point. I'm going to triggger a lot of mumsnetters here by saying I never touch those public buttons with fingers that would go anywhere near my own or my kids mouths... I'd use elbow or wrist and NO I don't think I'm better than everyone I of course used to touch them normally until I saw first hand the horrors of where people's hands go before they touch them things.

Baby crawls on the floor in the house of course. At soft play they clean it daily at least.... we're talking baby snot getting mixed up not sweaty bloke from a construction site scratching his arse and then your baby putting the hand in its mouth

Well, if he's on MN then presumably his response would have been "Thank you for your life advice random woman"....

It would have been the appropriate response.

FrontalHeadache · 13/02/2024 10:34

I don’t think my kids licked stuff, but I never carried hand sanitiser anywhere when they were young. People are so OTT about this stuff now.

A child licking a handle is as gross as somebody scratching their bum and touching a handle. People are people and there’s not much we can do about it but wash our hands when we get home.

I doubt any child has got really ill from this kind of activity and people need to get a grip and sense of perspective about germs and hygiene.

Do you disinfect your elbows and wrists too? I wonder what your immune system is like.

You could just wash your hands regularly and especially before eating. Just a thought.

Triggered does not mean what you seem to think it means, OP.

I'm laughing at the idea of soft play being cleaned daily, though. Even if they tried, how would that even work? Are they cleaning every ball in the ball pit? Does a staff member squeeze through the toddler-sized assault course with a bottle of Dettol? Soft play is a cesspit for germs, it always has been. You've just got to plunge in and hope for the best (as in life).

Polecat07 · 13/02/2024 10:46

That's what babies do, it's fine. You'd be the weird one to say anything.

Nellle · 13/02/2024 10:49

OP, you're not "triggering" anyone by asking if you're being unreasonable and being told yes, YABU.

Mybusyday · 13/02/2024 10:57

I would be horrified too if I saw this happen. I can't believe the amount of people replying that think this is actually ok! This is surely bad parenting from this father. I also use my elbows and other parts of my body to open doors etc in public places as I am just so sick of everyone getting ill from public places!

Itneverrainsinsocal · 13/02/2024 11:02

I agree @bottomsup12 that is so gross. I don't see any reason to let young babies/toddlers drag their hands up and down dirty surfaces - they can either hold your hand, or hold a toy etc. The odd touch here and there happens and catching bugs is inevitable even if you're careful. But I don't think that's an excuse to let them touch every single dirty thing. I think it's better to encourage good hand hygiene and distract the hands away if possible! I try to limit the germ spread especially if I'm snotty or my child is.

I don't think I would have had the bottle to say anything though 😏sadly I think those that feel this kind of thing is ok, just don't get our point of view!

My DC love to grab the handrail. You're being ridiculous.

Think 'ridiculous' is a bit OTT.
Great that your DC love holding the hand rail.
Not so great that they could then ingest norovirus.

I wouldn’t have said anything. His child and he is the parent .

It’s him that has to deal with the consequences of a potential virus that his child may have picked up from allowing them to do this.

It has nothing to do with you at all.
