To think dad should have stopped babies touching handrails on the tube and then sticking their hands in their mouth after?

bottomsup12 · 13/02/2024 08:30

Just that really? Saw a man holding his baby walking round the tube and letting the baby grab the rails etc and then just watching the child lick their hands after??

As a lifelong tube commuter I have seen people (blokes) scratching their arses or picking their noses and then casually grabbing the handrails.... to think a baby will be licking their hands after touching it horrifies me!

Would it be reasonable to have said something to the man?

Let me guess you don't have kids OP?

Cazpar · 13/02/2024 08:58

How different this thread is to the one currently running about a dog sitting in a highchair.

One: gross, unhygeinic, totally unacceptable!

The other: nah it's fine, it's great for their immune systems!

mypafology · 13/02/2024 08:59

This thread is like a competitive who can claim the most disgusting thing their baby did

My baby once ate an entire dog turd. We just watched and smiled indulgently 😂

I wouldn't have said anything OP but I agree, it sounds grim

CaineRaine · 13/02/2024 08:59

Yes you should have said something, there’s nothing more welcome than a total stranger giving unsolicited sanctimonious parenting advice - please do report back on how it goes next time OP.

EchoFallz · 13/02/2024 08:50

Just REALLY - nothing else in your own life to worry about?

Why would you assume she has nothing else to worry about?

HavfrueDenizKisi · 13/02/2024 09:02

I turned around to see my toddler daughter licking the train window once. She'd been at it for a good while as the window was quite wet.

It would have been extremely welcome, if at that point, someone offered me parenting and germ advice. You should have chased after the man and told him OP.

Babies are fucking gross and there is bugger all you can do about it. You cannot stop them touching things and you cannot stop them putting their hands in their mouths.

YABU and need to keep your hang-ups to yourself instead of seeking validation for them. And also mind your own business.

Afternoonsnooze · 13/02/2024 09:41

When my (48 year old) sister was a toddler she would sit in the garden for hours with a bowl, spoon and old Yorkshire pudding tin and make mud pies which she would merrily tuck into. Hasn’t done her any harm.

I once found my dd licking the wheels of her pushchair!

Personally I believe the worst thing we can do with our babies and children is to sanitise the life out of everything that comes their way.
Obviously we don’t want to put danger in our children’s way but young humans absolutely need to build up an immune system.

IDontHateRainbows · 13/02/2024 08:54

My son once put his finger in a drop of wee from the previous person on the loo seat and locked it before I could stop him

He has a mighty fine immune system 10 years later.

😂

I hope you remind him about this on a regular basis!

Edited to add, just realised he must only be 11 or so. Something for the future!

Letsgetouttahere2023 · 13/02/2024 09:45

Op, have you had a baby?

GodspeedJune · 13/02/2024 09:48

Letsgetouttahere2023 · 13/02/2024 09:45

Op, have you had a baby?

I have and I still think it’s extremely grim.

Onelifeonly · 13/02/2024 09:49

Come off it - he'd have been right to laugh in your face. You do know our bodies and the entire world are full of microbes? We live in harmony with most of them. Babies and toddlers lick and touch everything. How many die of some awful infection?

SnowyPetals · 13/02/2024 09:49

Well, if he's on MN then presumably his response would have been "Thank you for your life advice random woman"....

takealettermsjones · 13/02/2024 09:52

You know that babies go to soft play/baby groups/nurseries with other babies, where there is plenty of arse scratching and nose picking? 😂

Slanabhaile · 13/02/2024 09:52

If it's not your baby, mind your own business.

Spitalfieldrose · 13/02/2024 09:53

I took my eyes of my 3yo DD for 10 seconds on the Tube and looked up to see her licking the red pole 🤢 The looks I got, it wasn’t like I told her to lick it, kids are weird! I wanted to die on the spot.

However she’s 20 now and seems to have developed a super hero level immunity system, she’s rarely ill and still yet to get Covid. Maybe it was the pole licking? LOL!

jannier · 13/02/2024 09:54

I'm imagining just how you would get anywhere if every time baby touched something you had to whip out sanitizer let alone how it would impact a babi
es impulse to learn and explore the poor child could become so germ phobic they couldn't function.
Op are you the parent who whips out the baby wipes as babies eating?

user1497207191 · 13/02/2024 09:56

It's gross, but telling someone about things like safety/hygiene never ends well. They're hardly likely to thank you for your advice are they? More likely you'll get a verbal abuse and if the parent is a chav, a slap around the face! It's not your problem and not your concern.

@Cazpar exactly. On mumsnet if you point something bad out that other mumsnetters hadn't considered, instead of having an open mind and more awareness, they get all upset and triggered. It's hilarious how irate they get Grin

Mind your own business, and find some interest in your own life.

Daffodilsandsunshine · 13/02/2024 10:05

The tube is a moving petri dish of germs (as is anywhere where hundreds of people are crammed in together) but pointing such things out to a random stranger never goes well.

EchoFallz · 13/02/2024 10:08

I suppose because you just see this and think oh well hey Ho, not take time out to wonder if the total stranger is doing something wrong?

aware I’m doing exactly the same 😁

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/02/2024 10:10

Upset and triggered eh? Now you sound even more ridiculous.

Fairymother · 13/02/2024 10:13

I caught my kids several times actually licking the handle bar of my shopping cart when they were sat in there 🙈
Its what babies and little kids do.. 🤷🏻‍♀️
