To not pick up dog poo...

... when in a quiet forest, but to flick it with a stick into dense undergrowth instead?

I don't see any issue with this, but I've got a feeling lots will disagree with me, so I wanted to get some other opinions.

If you're offended by a swear word, that's your choice.

The false equivalence between horse and other wildlife poo and dog poo has been addressed numerous times. Read the thread.

I have read it thank you - and also cited the diseases you can pick up from all the other animals that freely poop in the same zones. I’m a bag it up and take it home dog owner, but the hysteria and antipathy exclusively towards dogs in areas where other animals are also pooping is ridiculous.

The tone of your replies is appalling - you can simply state your case without being aggressive and crude.

nonmerci99 · 13/02/2024 09:17

I live in a village in a semi-rural area. There is dog poo everywhere -- in the fields at the primary school, in the grass at the play park, on the river and wooded paths, and even in the woodland just outside the village.

It's no wonder, considering the amount of dog owners in this thread going to absurd lengths trying to justify their lazy, selfish behaviour. So, thanks OP, it's helpful seeing you all come out of the woodwork to explain away why it's fine for you to leave your dog poo (or "flick it") wherever you'd like.

Flottie · 13/02/2024 09:17

It depends on how busy the forests gets and whether the undergrowth is completely inaccessible to people (toddlers!). It does seem silly to me that something biodegradable is put into plastic bags.

Give me a break. If you can't engage in meaningful debate without clutching your pearls, get off the internet.

But calling legitimate concern over the tons of dog shit in our green areas "hysteria" is ok? 😅

Herdinggoats · 13/02/2024 09:19

I took great effort when training my dog that he goes off into the undergrowth to do his business. I’d much rather that than on a path or grass, where quite frankly even if you pick it up I then wouldn’t want children playing where it’s been! I’m not going searching through the brambles to then go and find it!

I think part of the issue here though is what people class as woods, from some of these comments I think they are talking about wooded areas of national trust places or country parks, rather than really rural areas. I think there is a bit of a difference between remote woods and country parks where I often see kids den making etc

It's classic tone policing -- she has no argument, so instead she's going to focus on my use of the apparently appalling term, "shit."

Dogs. Are. Not. Wildlife.

Wildlife. In. The. UK. Is. At. Risk. Dogs. Are. Not.

Please. Stop. Comparing. Them.

They. Are. Not. The. Same.

PS. You. Are. Lazy.

I was discussing forestry commission areas - the subject of OP’s comment - not pathways or public parks where of, course, owners should clean up after themselves and be fined if they do not.

All good until you go for a walk with kids who like scrambling through the undergrowth …

This. Think of others. Don't be disgusting bag it up and bin it.

kittensinthekitchen · 13/02/2024 09:21

I don't understand, if you can get to it with a stick, surely you can get to it with a bag?

ChiefEverythingOfficer · 13/02/2024 09:22

Moonfishstar · 13/02/2024 06:44

you absolutely cannot guarantee this! plus you cannot be sure your dog is going to poo near dense brambles .just pick it up and bring it home

You absolutely cannot guarantee anything in life! If we all only did things where we could absolutely guarantee the outcome, we'd never leave the house!

I play turd tennis on remote rambles. My logic is that it's far better than adding ANOTHER plastic bag to landfill.

Fear not OP, I believe in rationally exercising judgement at a place in time and think more should do the same.

Well I can poke a two foot stick through brambles, whereas if I do the same with my arm it’s going to get cut to ribbons????

Milkmani · 13/02/2024 09:25

Imagine trying to justify not picking up dog poo. How many dogs are treading in shit then bringing it into your homes, whether your in the city, middle of nowhere, wherever 🤢 So grim, won’t let relatives bring their dog to my house. Now I’m reading on another thread about dogs in high chairs - wtf! Sorry there’s just too many dogs these days, can’t get away from them. I probably wouldn’t mind so much but everywhere I go is just littered with poo or poo in bags where the lazy owners can’t be bothered to carry it. Not sure what is worse?

But we can take measures to increase the probability of things working in our favour.
Just pick up the poo!

Haydenn · 13/02/2024 09:27

I’ve got my own section of scrubland and woods where mine tend to go…I’m brought to mind slightly thought of a thread from last year if anyone remembers it where a mum made a lady pick up her dogs mess and it was on her own land 😂 I think the land access got revoked in the end. Does anyone remember it?

bingoringo4 · 13/02/2024 09:28

I do exactly the same as you op. My dogs are raw fed, their shit is white and crumbles like dust.

Not sure why posters are getting their knickers in a twist, the wild animals aren't bagging up their shite 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

funinthesun19 · 13/02/2024 09:28

Any old excuse not to pick it up. 🙄

Why not treat woodland with the respect it deserves and just get rid of your dog’s shit? That way we can have woodlands without any dog shit.

ClairDeLaLune · 13/02/2024 09:28

Nofilteritwonthelp · 13/02/2024 06:30

Disgusting! That sounds horrible, I don't think there is a worse smell than dog shit, except maybe a dead corpse

A dead corpse? I really wouldn’t want to meet an alive corpse! Apologies for the pedantry, I agree with you, it’s rank.

Starlight1979 · 13/02/2024 09:29

Lots of places these days have "stick and flick" policies these days (usually woodlands / forests) and I would far prefer people to do this than pick up their dog poo and hang the bag off a tree branch or leave it on a fence / post! WHY do people do this?!?! It's doubly worse for the environment than just leaving it!!!

Asa long as nowhere near paths, absolutely fine

Just badger/fox/deer...

Moonfishstar · 13/02/2024 09:06

Just pick it up! Even under hedges it'll smell and wild animals will get it on them etc

Don't wild animals poo?

Of course they do, but your dog isn't a wild animal.

There are now close to 12 million dogs in the UK - by way of context, there are less than a million hedgehogs, about 250,00 badgers and around 350,000 foxes. Domestic pets are interlopers. Their carnivorous diet and their huge numbers mean their waste is problematic environmentally. Dog and cat piss and shit contaminates groundwater and kills insects and ground nesting birds.

Your dog isn't part of nature and its shit is harmful to nature. Just pick it up.

Itrymybestyesido · 13/02/2024 09:31

It's lazy and disgusting. It's poo for crying out loud.

IMakeCrapCakes · 13/02/2024 09:31

@Tygertiger would those be any good for someone who's running? I run with my dog-really annoying having to stop to find a bin (hard running with a bag of poo!) but I've never found a solution.
