After all these interior design threads this is what I'm imagining everyone on mumsnets homes look like. Just curious if I'm way off because iv never been in a home like this. Maybe if the person is in their 80s. Do people really have bookshelves?

I turned the biggest bedroom in our house into a Library so it's a full room of bookcases.

I have library envy, mine are shared between 4 rooms.

My landlady told me that part of what swung us getting the house was me enthusing about the massive low bookcase in the front room. Kindred spirits. The previous tenant had asked to bin it.

In their 80's??

I've always had bookshelves and loads of physical books, I'm in my 50's! Had bookshelves since my 20's though.

Do you really not know people with books, who read?

ArchetypalBusyMum · 12/02/2024 14:35

I mostly want to know what hinges were used for the large door loaded with books!! The load on that door frame/hinges must be huge. 😁

My house is like a hippy version of that, I suppose. Yes, we have books.

My son is 25 and he has bookcases because he's an avid reader of books. He doesn't like kindles and, like me, likes to physically own books.

My walls are white but I have a lot of colour otherwise. And lots of musical instruments. And plants.

And throws and lamps and candles.

It's lovely.

SirenSays · 12/02/2024 14:35

The house isn't my style AT ALL but I have lots of bookcases. I wouldn't consider keeping treasured books for the family, hoarding 🤔

IAmNotAVet · 12/02/2024 14:35

I'm just waiting for the poster to come on and say if she goes into someone's home without books, she feels ill and has to leave.

😄 This did happen in a similar thread a while ago.

SomeCatFromJapan · 12/02/2024 14:35

I have most of my current fiction on kindle but I have books for keeping, ranging from cookbooks from my grandmother to my childhood books to my collection of 2000AD annuals to my Munroe guides.

Gettingcolder · 12/02/2024 14:35

I wish I had more bookshelves and that they were as beautiful as those pictured! Mine are a mix of antique furniture and diy shelves.

That picture actually looks like my bookcases! 6, floor to ceiling, but I need more!

I'm just really struggling to envisage what kinds of homes people have as nobody seems to like anything except bookshelves, plants and lots of colour

If you're struggling to envisage what kinds of homes people have, why not spend a bit of time on RightMove? Try different areas of the country, try rural and urban, try apartments and houses, try super expensive and super cheap, try detached and terraces, try inner city and suburban. That'll give you an idea of what actual people's home are like.

FWIW - we have floor to ceiling book shelves on three walls in our middle bedroom. They are absolutely crammed with books. We're looking to move next year for more space for the books.

Y6yhnsr5 · 12/02/2024 14:36

Our house doesn't look like this...We don't have any bookshelves.
Definitely not my taste. Looks like a nightmare to keep clean.

Merrow · 12/02/2024 14:36

I have lots of bookcases. My 8 year old niece comes and raids them (I have a lot of children's fiction). It's lovely.

Pieceofpurplesky · 12/02/2024 14:37

My house is nothing like that but I had to buy a kindle as I have no more room for books! The smell, the feel and the holding of books are one of life's pleasures.

DS grew up surrounded by books and at 20 he reads more than me. Luckily his GF is a reader too.

Lizzieregina · 12/02/2024 14:37

I have one small bookshelf in my bedroom.

I read all the time but don’t buy or keep books. I use the library, the Free Little Libraries in my neighbourhood or thrift shops, and then I return/donate all the books.

I love when people assume that if you don’t have big bookshelves in your house that you don’t read.

  1. My house is a lot smaller than that.
  2. There's ate bookcases in the living room. One is bursting with books, the other has spirits, ornaments, trophy and just a couple of shelves of books.
  3. The furniture is quite mismatched.
  4. Lego. As in display pieces, not kids lego.
  5. It also currently looks like an explosion in a packaging factory as we started s small hobby business late last year, and it immediately exploded.

I'm not saying people under 80 don't read but I thought most people would either use kindle apps or donate after reading not hoard for 30 years

I use kindle and have two bookcases. Sometimes I read a book on kindle then buy the actual book if I loved it. I keep and reread my favourites. I only donate ones I don't plan on reading again.

Overtheatlantic · 12/02/2024 14:38

Ours is similar to the one one the right. We have bookshelves, cushions, rugs, some lovely inherited bits, and lamps.

Gizamaluke · 12/02/2024 14:39

The Billy bookcase is Ikea's most popular item so people definitely have bookcases.

I wish my house looked like the second picture.

Dogfisher · 12/02/2024 14:33

x post murasaki!

Checks carefully to make sure you're not in my house ......

Mismatched old furniture is the best.
Each thing chosen, and in some cases salvaged, to complement the others but not samey samey like a tedious 3 piece suite.

Chocolateismylovelife · 12/02/2024 14:39

I’m an avid reader, I have 1 single shelf of books because I do not have the space for more.
Or the budget to buy a book every 2 weeks.

Also despite my voracious reading habit, neither of my child are into books and only read because they have to have their reading records signed.

We have no bookshelves. When we downsized we got rid if them.

We do have loads of books on Kindle though and almost a thousand on Audible between us.

We read or listen everyday

noname846 · 12/02/2024 14:41

Not fancy built-in ones like the ones pictured (I wish!), yes, lots of bookcases here. I love my Kindle, particularly for fiction, but it will never completely replace physical books.

BarbieDangerous · 12/02/2024 14:41

I don’t know anyone who has a bookshelf except for my auntie and my cousin (they’re mum and daughter) and that’s because they’re both writers! I own like two books. One about Autism and one about Binge Eating Disorder. What a fun life I have.

But no my house looks nothing like that. At all
