After all these interior design threads this is what I'm imagining everyone on mumsnets homes look like. Just curious if I'm way off because iv never been in a home like this. Maybe if the person is in their 80s. Do people really have bookshelves?

Mocking people's belief in the Bible is not ok

Not people I know

Would hate not to have books in the house.

My house doesn’t look like that but of course I have book shelves! With lots of books on!
Children who grow up in houses with books (regardless if they read them or not) achieve better academic outcomes than children who don’t.
I find it odd when people’s houses don’t have book shelves.

Is this true? What good are the books doing if they don't read them?

I wasn't doing that, more their belief that Sophie Kinsella is channeling Satan.

We have bookshelves. For our books.
I can't understand how people manage without books

Kindles or other e reader. Plus, I bet most of the books just sit on the shelf doing nothing once you have read them. Your life would be no different if they weren't there.

Here's some of mine...

For those people who have the floor to ceiling bookshelves, doesn’t it make you feel claustrophobic? I always hated the university library as it felt really closed-in. I prefer things to be at or below head height, or at least to be able to see the top of the shelves.

Mine make the place dark. There is no room for pictures and no point in painting the walls. It makes it like a book storage room and not an actual living room. None of us actually sit in the room now, and its the only living room we have. It's oppressive. I would sometimes like to do things like light a candle but it means there is nowhere to put a candle.

Jeschara · 12/02/2024 18:07

No bookshelves in my house, I don't like them. My house is a home not a library. I love reading but it is all done on kindle. All in one place and all tidy.

I don’t find it claustrophobic.
Always best to put reference books lower down though so you can get to them easily

Ellie56 · 12/02/2024 18:08

Yes I have books (and a Kindle). Yes I have bookshelves. My house does not look like either of those pictures.

JanisMoplin · 12/02/2024 18:09

Marie Kondo would so love this thread.

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/02/2024 18:09

Bookshelves, yes. Those rugs, defo not!

I would imagine these children would have better academic outcomes because their parents are likely to value literacy and education. In reality whether the books were on a physical bookshelf or on a kindle would make no difference though.

VincentVanGoth · 12/02/2024 18:11

I have a few ‘special’ books that I keep stored away but no, I don’t have bookshelves in the lounge.
I haven’t actually bought a book for years! All mine come from the library.

eta the children all have bookshelves in their rooms

DoesNotPlayWellWithIdiots · 12/02/2024 18:12

My house doesn't look like those pictures, it's much more untidy! I do have bookshelves - in almost every room. I adore books, have done since before I could even read them. I keep getting more and will soon need more shelves. I'm not in my 80s!

Moodicum · 12/02/2024 18:13

You would all hate it lots of grey. white gloss kitchen, minimalistic. Vertical blinds.

sounds like my depressing work office!

It’s not mocking anyone’s belief (which also happens to be my own faith) to point out that the Song of Songs has erotic content (between likely unmarried lovers) that makes Sophie Kinsella look like Mary Whitehouse.

The idea of having a house without bookshelves is quite simply horrific to me!!

Me too. Unthinkable in fact.

TeenLifeMum · 12/02/2024 18:14

I don’t think I know people without bookshelves. Although, maybe people think we don’t have any as ours are all upstairs.

Nottodaty · 12/02/2024 18:15

My houses doesn’t look like that - but both daughters bedroom has book shelves for books and school folders etc very useful!

I also have a shelf with books on in my bedroom and the living room has a book shelf - with a collection of special books - that we wouldn’t want to give to charity. All the other books we rotate once we read them we usually take them to charity shop for some new ones!

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 12/02/2024 18:15

Loads and loads of books, but sadly no bookshelves yet. Plans for bookshelves... many bookshelves! I did evict paperback fiction recently as it was getting ridiculous and sent 28 boxes to charity... you couldn't see much of a difference in the number of boxes sadly.

And yep, totally mismatched furniture - some old (1600s), some new and some inherited. I hate matchy matchy. No doilies.

ElaineMBenes · 12/02/2024 18:16

Actually I think I'd be miserable.
I like looking at my books and bookshelves. Just having them in my house brings me joy.

This is very true. Even i was a tad surprised when I read it.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 12/02/2024 18:17

I have 2 low book cases and a bigger one in my living room, and 2 in my office. I would love a room like the pictures - but it will never happen in my lifetime.

PrawnDumplings · 12/02/2024 18:18

Well what does your house look like op?
