After all these interior design threads this is what I'm imagining everyone on mumsnets homes look like. Just curious if I'm way off because iv never been in a home like this. Maybe if the person is in their 80s. Do people really have bookshelves?

Mine isnt too dissimilar to that, in all honesty. And yes to bookshelves. I don't have nearly enough though.

Dentistlakes · 12/02/2024 17:55

Yes, we have bookshelves in every room apart from the bathrooms. Books don’t like the damp.

I have that stripey rug (John Lewis)! Or one very similar. It is gorgeous, so full of wonderful colours. I also have bookshelves. I don’t have a coffee table. I am under 80.

Nellieinthebarn · 12/02/2024 17:56

We had a wall of bookshelves in our old house, in this house we have a wall waiting for its bookshelves and books still in boxes. This is pissing me off, but there are higher priorities. I just hope it happens eventually.

mitogoshi · 12/02/2024 17:56

My old house wasn't a million miles away, the bookshelves weren't installed like the photo so think board games on top and they were in the room with the desk and two arm chairs whereas the two sofas and arm chairs were in the living area but facing the 47 inch tv. No rug, wooden floors.

Current house (post divorce) is more mixed between its part my furniture part dps from our former homes and we can't justify buying new stuff plus we prefer taking holidays to home furnishings Grin

Houses and people are divided into the bookish and the not bookish OP.
I'll stop there before I say something I'll regret.

I think that over simplifies

MzHz · 12/02/2024 17:57

Love a bookshelf

would love a library, but H resisting on buying a massive house JUST because it has a library >pah!<

I think most people have bookshelves, dont they?

I don’t.

BronwenTheBrave · 12/02/2024 17:57

Yes, otherwise the books fall on the floor.

ZebraPensAreLife · 12/02/2024 17:58

For those people who have the floor to ceiling bookshelves, doesn’t it make you feel claustrophobic? I always hated the university library as it felt really closed-in. I prefer things to be at or below head height, or at least to be able to see the top of the shelves.

Especially when they have the approval of the Big Guy!

She’s in for a shock when she gets to the Song of Songs.

astarsheis · 12/02/2024 17:58

We had a quite a nomadic expat life for many years...and books were some of the most common things to be left behind, passed on to other expats or locals that wanted to read English books.
As I am now a serial 'clearer outer', our house does not look like that. However, we have some fabulous pieces and art collected from our travels around the world...so no not all MN homes look like that

None of that makes them evil, though. Sex before marriage is perfectly normal!

That doesn't make it ok.

hopeishere · 12/02/2024 17:59

I love reading. I read all the time. I read it all ok a kindle because I have really bad eyesight and on a kindle I make the font bigger and it's backlit.

Does if your name's Mary and you've got a really good story to tell your fiance.

mitogoshi · 12/02/2024 18:00

@Damaged27

I've got pretty much every book, as has dp, we must have 5000+ in the house. I have a kindle as well but the battery has gone down I have to have it plugged in continuously Confused dp doesn't own one. We read paper books and even buy newspapers despite being under 60

KnickerlessParsons · 12/02/2024 18:00

We have bookshelves. For our books.
I can't understand how people manage without books

My house looks like a branch of Ikea, but with clutter.

Openingmyeyes · 12/02/2024 18:01

I'm actually thinking of doing a book wall (or corner) for DC. I only have tine to get through about 1 book a year but 10yo gets through loads and re-reads so I'd love to do this for him.

mitogoshi · 12/02/2024 18:02

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat

I went on a date, all went well, arranged a second then 2 hours later he texted me to call it off because I used "long words" and his mates said clever women are a painConfused

Crochetablanket · 12/02/2024 18:02

Books here a plenty. I would like one of those ‘bookshelf that is really a secret door’ things - like the OP photo.

ArabellaScott · 12/02/2024 18:02

BronwenTheBrave · 12/02/2024 17:57

Yes, otherwise the books fall on the floor.

Depends on the stacking structure, tbh. One can do a lot with a cantilever and an angle.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 12/02/2024 18:02

I have the carpet, no bookshelves though everything is on kindle

murasaki · 12/02/2024 18:03

I can't decide if I'm judging the 'books are clutter and reading is a waste of time' OP harder than the 'books are the work of the devil, especially chicklit' weirdo harder.

But it's fun figuring it out.
