To wonder if my wage is good?

So, I was just wondering what people generally earn part time?

I work 24 hours per week and earn 20k per year (1600pm) would you be happy with this?

Yes some people on here literally assume that if you dont earn 6 figures your life is not worth living and you should jump off a bridge - everybody's priorities differ and I understand that, just wish other people would.

You do seem rude. Have you thought about carers for the elderly who are fully trained & are only on minimum wage?
Their role is way more important than some 'high flying' office job.

You could need them in the future, think about that.

Very shallow.

I think you are very close minded as person. You ignored what I said completely. Those goals are for me. My income is way bigger than those numbers listed. To be precise - I managed to retire at age of 35. I do respect elderly people, but truth is that productivity is decreasing within years - it will be same with my own. You are rude if you reading the way you like to read, without understanding.

It doesn't matter at all what you earn, it matters what your disposable income is.

I'd rather be on 20k with mortgage paid off than on 200k and not be able to afford my credit credit bills.

Exactly!

I used to work with someone who started on 17k as an IT technician, she worked her way up in the company and now earns nearly 50k.

But, she has never invested in her pension, she is still paying off her debts and she rents a studio flat.

I earn 31k a year so basically the same as you and I actually think it's a pretty good salary! But this is only because DH and I put our money together and we are frugal.

It's not about salary but about your lifestyle and how 'free' you feel with your disposable income

6 figures in nowadays is average salary I would say - especially if you are based in London. 100k salary after tax is around 5k per month +- . You want decent life - you need to make minimum 120-150k (if you want to have new car, decent size house, 2-3 times holidays abroad and look after your family + MOST IMPORTANT - you need to invest, save and put some money asside for rainy day and retirement). Imagine all this listed trying to achieve with 30k salary - is non-sense. What is the point of the life then? Survive? Be realistic. Is not about being rude, arogant or disrespectfull - is about being realistic to yourself, your family needs. Obviously each one is different - some might have rich parents, some might have assets who generates passive income and etc. some might have disability. Life is hard.

To be honest i would be bored out of my head if i retire when i am 35!

Covid turned out which jobs were 'important' in society and it turns out that the jobs which are 'low paying' (working in a supermarket, carers, teaching assistants etc) are valued far more than someone who works in an office earning 100k a year.

Money does not buy happiness.

Dacadactyl · 12/02/2024 17:48

Average salary is nowhere near 6 figures @Delerium1970 I thought it was something like 34k.

Plenty of families live decent lives on less than half 100k (mine included) Granted we are not in London though and I wouldn't like to make our money stretch down there.

Testina · 12/02/2024 17:48

JPArkes90 · 12/02/2024 14:41

My DH worked so hard to get where he is now, He would often work until midnight when our DD was born and it was very challenging. I have never understood that mindset

Well you didn’t need to understand that mindset, cos you had someone else prepared to do it so that you could work part time 🤷🏻‍♀️
What an odd thing to say.

Dacadactyl · 12/02/2024 17:50

@Testina presumably she worked PT to look after their children, which was decided between her and her DH as best option.

If he'd had to, my husband would've worked til midnight so that we didn't need to use childcare too.

if you want to feel "important" you can always do some charity work.. spend more time with family.. that is a beauty of being free.. You cannot buy happiness for £££, but you can get more valued time with your loved ones, do more what you really like.. so is yes and no..

You not read properly my response :) I am not talking about average salary.

milkonesugar35 · 12/02/2024 17:53

I'm a teacher working four days a week. Contracted to 32 hours but those in the know will understand I work way more than that unpaid. My salary is 37,500. Fte is 47,000.

Some people have no choice but to work.
In 'low paying jobs' too. Like carers, working in a supermarket .

Think about that when you pick up your groceries from the shops.

Or when you need care when you're elderly. Those people caring for you or your loved ones are on pittance yet have way more 'skills' and training than anyone.

You couldn't do that if these jobs did not exist.

No way would i want to retire at 35. I'd be so bored and feel worthless to society.

Which just goes to illustrate the different priorities bit.

Neither of us view childcare as something so awful that one of us should work crazy hours to avoid it.

My children even enjoy it sometimes 😁

trust me I worked in stores :) I learned hard way.. I am always thinking, I just think people are too weak to accept honest comments sometimes.

Like you say, just different priorities.

PianoOnWheels · 12/02/2024 18:23

I earn around that for nearly as many hours but not quite (21 hours over 3 days) and I’m happy with it. I think the work/life balance is good and it fits in well with my children.

I used to earn 68k in a different role and was totally miserable, working all hours, stressed, putting on weight, I even started losing my hair!

There are so many factors to consider. Obviously the dream scenario is a very well paid role which also offers great work life balance but I haven’t managed to find one of those yet.

blooblom · 12/02/2024 18:23

@Delerium1970 what is the point of my life because I don't earn a 6 figure salary? What do you suggest I do with my worthless life? Clearly working in a hospital isn't good enough. You are completely out of touch with reality!

Ha! 6 figures is not at all the average salary, whatever you say. I think we can all see who is and isn't telling porkies on this thread.

Mumof1andacat · 12/02/2024 18:24

I work 30 hours a week for the same money so you're doing better than me (nhs band 4 admin)

More to the point of course, I am considering training to be a Midwife and wondering what I may come out with.

Depends on hours you work. My salary is similar to a midwife (I'm an itu nurse at top of band 5)

I take home around £1800-2000 a month and I work 30 hours, but I do all nights. Basic full time salary is from 28k-35k depending on your banding,

I do nights and weekends and last year I earned £37k

I mean I work 2 hours a month and earn £250k net so I’m probably not the best person to ask.
