To wonder if my wage is good?

So, I was just wondering what people generally earn part time?

I work 24 hours per week and earn 20k per year (1600pm) would you be happy with this?

@Youcannotbeseriousreally unless all your teacher friends are in SLT, I highly doubt they are all on 60k FTE. Unless there is something I'm missing like you live abroad.

Unsure tbh but this is absolutely irrelevant to the OPs thread.

I guess this is an anonymous forum and not everybody will be being 100% truthful

The median average in the UK from April 2023 was just under 35k a year full time. The chances are not everyone is truthful on here, but that doesn't mean to say everyone isn't because even a FTE of your salary is less than the average so there will always be those with higher or lower salaries.

You've still not answered what your role actually is?

WithACatLikeTread · 12/02/2024 12:42

JPArkes90 · 12/02/2024 12:02

Wow some of your salaries are amazing! are you in London?

I think some are lying.

JPArkes90 · 12/02/2024 12:44

I don't want to disclose what my role is. I was just speaking to my friend who is a TA and she asked me if there were any jobs going as I earn more than her FT?

Maybe she pays more tax

LaDoIceVita · 12/02/2024 12:47

My contract is 25 hours/week and that's 15.5k a year. Decent pension scheme so employer's contributions to that are 1500 a year and using the staff discount is worth a minimum of another 1000 a year.

Edit: Hotel housekeeper to save everyone asking.

Doublenoogahsilvousplait · 12/02/2024 12:48

@WithACatLikeTread

I am certainly not lying. I work in Scotland, central belt and work freelance. £24,000 a year is my minimum if I only work 12 hours a week which I currently do. I'll up my hours when my children are older.

I'm sure it's harder for OP living in London and cost of living will be higher too. But this thread is pretty meaningless without more information. It's all relative.

Hummusandstuff · 12/02/2024 12:49

Your TA friend may not be doing many more hours than you if it’s term time only.

JPArkes90 · 12/02/2024 12:49

Sorry I just want to add that I do not live in London, was just curious as I am aware London salaries are considerably higher

TA's are pretty poorly paid. I would believe OP's friend.

TraitorsGate · 12/02/2024 12:50

Surely it all depends on your Jon, hourly rate, deductions.

LonginesPrime · 12/02/2024 12:51

Just search for jobs similar to yours in your area and see how your pay compares.

Or ask a recruitment agency what you could expect to earn in x role.

Asking random anonymous strangers will give the least accurate answer, compared to either of the above.

RaininSummer · 12/02/2024 12:52

It's not bad at all. Full time civil servant here on less than 30k.

JPArkes90 · 12/02/2024 12:53

My take home before deductions is 1683, My pension and NI and tax comes off that

Well yes, but as I say cost of living is higher too.

It's relative to the rest of your life- your outgoings, how much do you need to earn for your life, what is the job, what's the industry standard, what are your qualifications and experience?

It's hard to answer. Some people would kill for your wage. I wouldn't settle for it because that's not enough money for the work I do. It just depends 🤷🏻‍♀️

JPArkes90 · 12/02/2024 12:54

More to the point of course, I am considering training to be a Midwife and wondering what I may come out with.

OP posts:
spriots · 12/02/2024 12:56

I really dislike the assumption that any woman on a high salary must be lying.

I earn quite a lot more than you, OP, and am not lying about that.

But really it's about what you need, what you want out of your career and what work life balance you want. Using childcare doesn't bother me so I haven't restricted my career to avoid it. I work four days a week and I feel like I get plenty of time with my children

JPArkes90 · 12/02/2024 12:57

I am not saying you're lying, I just think it was naïve of me to assume everybody would be telling the truth

I don't want to disclose what my role is. I was just speaking to my friend who is a TA and she asked me if there were any jobs going as I earn more than her FT?

Then if you're not wanting to disclose your role nobody can tell you whether your salary is good or not.

My job title is fairly self explanatory from my username, I earn just over 60k a year for full time and I'm in the midlands. You'll see why I wouldn't be happy on a much lower salary because of how long it takes to qualify. But my mum is an admin assistant earning 23k a year for full time, so she'd be more than happy earning your salary because the ceiling for her role is much lower. It's all relative. There will always be people on lower and higher salaries so rather than focusing on whether it's a good salary comparatively, focus on whether it's good enough for you or not.

Your friend is a TA so probably gets paid for 39 weeks a year, spread over the full 52 weeks.

Futb0l · 12/02/2024 12:58

It really depends:

  • your age
  • where you are located (eg the north east is a cheaper place to live but has lower wages)
  • your level of training/skill/relevant qualifications/experience
  • your personal requirements
  • other perks of the job - pension, discounts, flexible/school hours, how much holiday is included
  • how much stress/responsibility is involved

Everyone has different needs and preferences. If you're happy with it then good for you.

Honestly OP this is such a pointless thread.

Are you happy with your wage? Work/life balance is more important than money IMO.

I also wouldn't touch nursing or midwifery with a barge pole. Sounds bloody stressful.

JPArkes90 · 12/02/2024 13:02

I am extremely happy with my work/life balance. I feel incredibly lucky, I WFH 100% of the time and although I do miss the office banter, It does work for my life.

OP posts:
yogpot · 12/02/2024 13:03

Are you happy? Are your needs, and the needs of your family if applicable, met by your salary? If the answer to those is yes then it’s a good salary and it doesn’t matter what anyone else earns. It doesn’t signify whether anyone is harder working, or smarter or kinder. Just signifies the commercial value of your work.
