For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Interested to hear yours!

@Elphame I think some of those are beautiful compared to the public loos I've used!

Scrumbleton · 11/02/2024 22:45

Fake grass
slogans on walls
completely beige/cream ( porridge) themed rooms
sparkly granite worktops
crushed velvet

EconomyClassRockstar · 11/02/2024 22:45

Woodwork painted black. Shows the slightest bit of dust. Makes my heart sink as I know that means paint stripping rather than painting over.

My biggest one that I have an absolute visceral hatred of is diamond shaped pavers with artificial grass. It literally turns my stomach and I have no idea why.

Whoopaday · 11/02/2024 22:46

Love giant plants and shelves full of healthy plants, what’s not to love and it’s good for your living environment.

I am consideri the navy walls it looks fantastic.

But grey and crushed velvet is bleurgh

moderationincludingmoderation · 11/02/2024 22:47

Subway tiles
Critall shower screens
Black taps, fittings etc in bathroom.

All on every Pinterest board 3/4 years ago and now looking so dated.

Not a fan of plantation style shutters. They feel like the ultimate generic design choice.

Also not a Kitchen Island fan.. but depends what style. I don't mind them in a very big space but not a fan in extensions where it feels like they aren't necessarily needed and they are trying to make the space something it just isnt.

Reach9out · 11/02/2024 22:47

Red accessories like rug, cushions, vase, flowers, wall art etc all in one room

Boomboomshakeshaketheroom · 11/02/2024 22:47

Also, attempting to brighten up a plain room by throwing a lairy colour on the wall and adding matching scatter cushions. It always looks so stark, as opposed to adding layers of warmth and depth to a neutral base using texture, plants, rugs, books, art etc.

Metro tiles. Just degrades every kitchen or bathroom to looking like a public lavatory circa 1974.

Bifold doors on the back of a house especially if the house isn't a modern house.

Fake panelling.

Dark paint.

Feature walls with wallpaper especially hideous poppy wallpaper.

Houseplants everywhere.

Grey.

I said exactly that, Metro white tiles look like public lavatories. My DH likes them but I vetoed them.

Fake Grass

This should be categorised at an environmental crime and people fined for the destruction of wildlife.

Yeh. What happens when they go out of “fashion” and you’ve lopped great chunks out of your wall

You have a false wall built, so the original wall is still there if you want it taken out.

I most certainly haven't RTFT, but I don't have any because I don't live in someone else's house, other people are absolutely free to decorate as they chose and to live in a space that makes them happy.

These threads are always just a thinly disguised excuse for a bit of snobbery.

I agree

Wouldn’t it be boring if we all liked the same

pitsoffashion · 11/02/2024 22:49

Surprised people are mentioning ‘Grey grey grey’ because you don’t see it much anymore, it’s dated now and nowhere to be found on Instagram etc. Even Mrs Hinch no longer has grey decor.

Everyone who had the previously all-grey houses now seem to have chosen the exact same beige/cream/sage green/black look.

Seeing lots of ‘dopamine decor’ all over Instagram and TikTok which seems to be making the entire house like a colourful children’s bedroom.

Reach9out · 11/02/2024 22:49

Cats love pooing on fake grass my neighbours have it and all the neighbourhood cats go to poo in their garden 🤣

Grey -especially sofas
artificial grass
mirrored things that aren’t mirrors
weird taps that are square
Professional family photos - sorry, I’m a miserable bastard I guess

We have a grey sofa, but only because I hate brown sofas, we have two kids and a dog, and I don’t want a sofa we will get bored of. I get the hate but it’s practical.

With you on everything else. We went to design a bathroom (cheaply - we had a flood just as we planned to put the house on the market, insurance would only reinstall same bathroom so we decided to upgrade and pay the difference) - my only specification was “not square taps” but they misinterpreted and told us they “got taps we’d love” FUCKING SQUARES. Then all the houses we viewed have SQUARES. So now we have dreaded fucking squares. I hate squares.

Cherrysoup · 11/02/2024 22:49

Grey, it's so passé.
Those horrible metro tiles, looks like a nasty public toilet.
Open plan downstairs, I don't want to be smelling the cooking when I'm watching TV in the lounge, plus it's disruptive if one person is watching TV, one cooking.
Agas unless you live in a big fuck off country house.

Marchintospring · 11/02/2024 22:49

I think the inside anyone's house that doesn't have anything of their own style looks odd.
Also this:
Bland front doors with a thin vertical window and chunky vertical handle.
There's not much anyone can do about building styles but I am hating the new build designs half clad in dark grey ( with those heavy front doors) They always look so stark.

Ain't that the truth.

I have been reading this going "tick" tick" tick" because I have lovely fake marble quartz, dark or very colourful walls, bifolds (why would I NOT want to open up the side of my house to the garden in summer? I have a beautiful garden), a neon which was made specially for me, loads of plants, dried foliage, eyelet curtains that are velvet and colour matched to the paint... oh god, yes... an open plan living/kitchen/dining room. The washing machine is upstairs in a laundry cupboard though so I don't fucking hear it. Mind you to get upstairs you'll need to use the grey carpet screams in horror.

But all this does make me laugh though as I once read on here that ensuites are the height of bad taste. I just want to have a middle of the night pee a few metres from my bed...

The only thing I don't like are vertical blinds and bright white lights. Everything really is just decor and we're all different. It's not like if someone was buying my house they'd be buying my stuff.

Do what you want, decorate how you like, live with what you love. Put that on a fucking wall decal too if it floats your boat.

alpenguin · 11/02/2024 22:49

Wall slogans /affirmations

indoor saunas in a 3bed semi wimpy villa

artificial grass (and the fannies who go out to hoover them 😂)

PieAndLattes · 11/02/2024 22:13

Grey laminate flooring. No wood on earth is naturally that grey.
Whole rooms painted navy or dark green - it’s doable provided there’s plenty of white in the room (deep picture rails, big skirting boards, high ceilings, etc.) but while it might make the room feel cosy on a rainy Sunday night, most of the time it just makes it look small, dark, and depressing.

Ooh no I hate dark walls with lots of features left in white! Makes the room feel smaller because you're introducing so many blocks and lines. Going all in, including the ceiling, makes a room feel much bigger, optically, than chunking it into blocks of dark and white...

This makes me think of an extra hate - when people leave ceilings and skirtings white regardless of the overall scheme and scale of a room. There is no rule that says these things have to be white and yet so many homes are decorated as if there were.

0rangeCrush · 11/02/2024 22:51

I’ve discovered I hate books as decor rather than, y’know, something to read.

I live near Mrs Hinch and I can tell you that GREEEEEYYYYYYYY is still very popular here. I saw one local girl's Instagram and I thought all her pics were in black and white, before realising that it was just how her house looked. Poor kids had grey everything.

Icouldabeenalawyer · 11/02/2024 22:52

Wow! Reading this I have committed many mumsnet sins 😂
I bloody love my home though so 😌
Ps. We also have a hot tub 😲

onemorerose · 11/02/2024 22:53

people really hate the colour grey! Do I need to get rid of my grey sofa? If it’s the only grey thing in the room and it’s very comfy can I keep it. (Not going to mention the houseplant greenery)

seafoamgreenhair · 11/02/2024 22:53

I hate undercabinet/footwell strip lighting in kitchens.

Also bright overhead downlights that make people look balding.
