Quite often when I've been on busy buses, there's been someone playing a TV programme out loud on their phone speaker, or they've been having a loud video call with no headphones.

I find this so annoying! Aaaa!

AIBU to think that this shouldn't be tolerated on public transport?

I'm on a bus right now, and the sound is blaring out into the whole bus! This has happened often.

I'm one of 'those' people. I look at them sternly and ask them to turn it down.

The alternative, for those having conversations, is to join in or ask questions. They love that 😬

Needmorelego · 09/02/2024 09:14

@quisensoucie no that's perfectly acceptable 😂

I do this when it feels safe. But honestly I wouldn’t feel safe asking a bunch of male teenagers on a train or bus.

I have always said if I win one of those mega lotteries I will buy 1000s of sets of headphones and travel around on public transport all day giving them out for free.
If the person doesn't take them.....then out the window their gadget goes 😂😂😂

If I won the lottery I would choose not to use public transport if I could help it!!

Last week there were train strikes and thus fewer trains. So mostly standing room only. One day I was standing and a man was man-spreading so much his leg and foot encroached half the aisle. I couldnt move up inside the carriage because I was tripping over his stupid foot!🙄

Another day DH and I got the last 2 seats, I was sitting next to soneone who reeked of smoke and was scrolling through their phone playing snippets of videos at offensive volume. id got to the point where i was about to get up and stand for the rest of the journey because it was so abnoying, but luckily they got out. I've also in the past sat next to people flossing their teeth or cutting their nails.
It's like people are oblivious that they're actually sharing a space with other people!!

Needmorelego · 09/02/2024 09:40

@Fizbosshoes oh my personal chauffeur would drop me off at the station so I could do my headphones distribution 😂

AuntiePathy · 09/02/2024 09:46

If I won the Lottery I would have my own private carriage, an old 1940s one, hitched to the back of the train and would travel everywhere in my own Miss Marple railway world. Sure, fellow passengers might be murdered by a vicar in my carriage but they definitely wouldn't watch loud TikToks of a woman in a tube dress falling through a window, or talk importantly into the base of their phone as if they're on The Apprentice.

(Disclaimer: currently on a Pendolino, and very bitter)

There are bylaws covering the railway and playing loud music to the annoyance of others is covered by them.

MintTwirl · 09/02/2024 09:59

Yes! On the train the other day, it was late at night and someone put on a really loud annoying programme for their young dc and the dc kept replaying the same irritating song over and over so the whole train had to listen to it.

JamSandle · 09/02/2024 10:06

I wish it was illegal.

I was on a long train ride to Scotland recently and two young men (maybe 20s) were listening to football commentary out loud on their phones at a high volume.

I tolerated it for about 20 minutes and said could you please turn it down or use headphones.

They turned it down the slightest bit (so barely anything) and continued.

I dont understand the complete lack of consideration for other people.

We all use these public spaces but there's this expectation that the space is yours.

I've been on public transport in Singapore and found it a completely different experience. Clean, considerate, calm.

Needmorelego · 09/02/2024 10:08

@AuntiePathy 😂😂😂

Aurea · 09/02/2024 10:10

This happened when I was in a restaurant once. The staff were tutting but did nothing.

NamelessGhoul · 09/02/2024 11:38

For reasons I can’t fathom my mother in law chooses to speak to her sister on speaker and as she’s a bit deaf the volume is at the max.
she’s done it a few times when we’ve been out with her, loud conversations about nothing important. I leave her and DH took it and wander off. Embarrassing.

Oh! You’re right. Bylaw 7 (1)(ii)

7 Music, sound, advertising and carrying on a trade

(1) Except with written permission from an Operator no person on the railway shall, to the annoyance of any person:
(i) sing; or
(ii) use any instrument, article or equipment for the production or reproduction of sound.

This is very useful information - thank you @owlsinthedaylight ! I will quote this byelaw at someone sometime soon, if I have the courage....

Oh thank goodness it's not just me. I was on a flight recently and there were 4 grandparents and a mother benevolently clucking over a 5 year old playing an iPad at volume. For 2 hours straight. I have noise cancelling earbuds , but not expensive enough ones to deal with Paw Patrol apparently.

I think people have reached a new level of self-absorption in the last few years. Not giving a toss about others has reached a sort of critical mass. Once people see others doing it, they decide they can too. The vote on this thread is quite heartening.

I wish big notices quoting that bylaw were on the walls of every carriage! Even then I suppose they’d be ignored, just like the ‘Quiet Coach’ signs are ignored.

And let’s not forget the Priority seats on trams and buses for those with mobility issues/infirm elderly. It saddens me to see so many young, physically mobile adults who can't read, or who simply ignore them. I used a walking stick for a while, couldn’t stand for long, and I’m obviously an oldie, with a pass to prove it! I needed to sit down on public transport. We don’t all have the confidence to ask someone to give up a seat.

Years ago you would have wanted privacy. You would have been embarrassed people hearing all your business.
Sadly it's the norm for some people now.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 16/02/2024 17:09

A campaign and signs for this is what I would have liked some TFL money to be spent on.

It went on a vanity project instead.

Trouble is that if the staff try to enforce it, they get a load of grief back, claims that the child playing "Let It Go!" loudly without headphones is autistic and woudl meltdown, and threats to make a complaint to management, just because the member of staff asked them to have consideration for the other passengers. People are so entitled these days.
