Quite often when I've been on busy buses, there's been someone playing a TV programme out loud on their phone speaker, or they've been having a loud video call with no headphones.

I find this so annoying! Aaaa!

AIBU to think that this shouldn't be tolerated on public transport?

I'm on a bus right now, and the sound is blaring out into the whole bus! This has happened often.

Oh god YES .
Should be illegal and someone snatching someone's phone off them and chucking it out the window should be perfectly legal (or smashing it with a hammer).

Stand for PM

you've got my vote

I like listening to other peoples phone calls. I've nearly missed my stop before if it's been a particularly interesting phone call.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Needmorelego · 08/02/2024 20:47

@StripyBathTowel I was on a bus the other day and two people were trying to out do each others music by constantly putting theirs up louder.
They both had unbelievably shite taste in music. Thankfully a big scary looking bloke told them both to "turn that crap down" (his words weren't quite so polite).

goodfry · 08/02/2024 20:48

The person behind me on the plane did this the other week, overheard the whole episode she was watching on Netflix, was so irritating!
I could never.

Needmorelego · 08/02/2024 20:49

@Tilllly nah I don't want to be PM.
Minister for the department of "Turn That Crap Down and Shut Up" maybe.

Tilllly · 08/02/2024 20:50

Lock them in a room and make them listen to Val Doonican or similar

Tilllly · 08/02/2024 20:50

@Needmorelego ok, when I'm PM, that's your job

I need VAT removed from wine as my first act in office

Booboocars · 08/02/2024 20:53

On airplanes is the worst. Parents sitting with headphones but letting their children watch their tablets with no headphones.

I always ask the air hostesses to have a word. It’s the height of rudeness.

ColleenDonaghy · 08/02/2024 20:55

YANBU. So selfish and clueless.

I did give out to a man on a train for this recently, very quiet daytime train, not even half full and he's watching random football and comedy videos. As I got off (too chicken to do it before that) I said he should use headphones on a train - the look of utter bafflement didn't suggest he'd be taking my point on board next time!

BananaPyjamaLlama · 08/02/2024 21:05

YES YES please someone start a petition. Make it so these devices will only work with headphones. The noise of other peoples devices is distressing enough to me for me to have to get off that particular bus/move train carriages etc.

"it just blends in" - noooooo it really doesnt.

BiscuitDreams · 08/02/2024 21:06

I was on the coach with DC a while ago, and the second we took off the woman behind us started listening to a relaxation tape without headphones and ridiculously loudly. I turned around and looked at her absolutely baffled but she carried on. I didn't know what to do so me and my kid started doing the breathing exercises really loudly too and talking about how relaxed we felt. She then turned it off. 😃

BananaPyjamaLlama · 08/02/2024 21:22

@BiscuitDreams Genius, well done!

Lorenta · 08/02/2024 21:37

I have seen all ages do it - teenagers and and older people.

Recently I was on the top deck of a London bus and it was packed. A guy was watching a film on loudspeaker yet no-one said a thing - not even those next to him.

I think people feel awkward about it and don't want to cause a scene or provoke a reaction?

I don't know why people do it. Do they not think it's annoying? Or do they not care?!

Obviously it couldn't actually be an official rule - because as said who would police it. But it's just public behaviour. People wouldn't accept it during a church service or something.
Just get some headphones people.... it's not complicated.
And for phone calls - you don't need it on speaker and you don't need to SHOUT the entire conversation.
People are just anti social arseholes sometimes.

True that it would be difficult to make it a law. But there could be signs up telling people not to do it. Like there are signs to give your seat to people who need it more.

stillawip · 08/02/2024 21:41

Maybe we should all start singing along tunelessly to their music? They’d soon turn it off 🤣🤣. If it’s a conversation you can hear, join in , & when they get annoyed say “oh sorry, I thought it was so loud so that we could all join in!” ….

CKL987 · 08/02/2024 21:52

I wish I had the guts to either put mine on loud too so it disturbs their listening, or if they are listening to a song to sing along really loudly. Unfortunately I don't.

ChihuahuasREvil · 08/02/2024 21:55

Noise cancelling AirPods, the only thing that stands between me and mass homicide.

sweettooth23 · 08/02/2024 21:57

It drives me nuts. I often scowl at the person with the phone. They must know how rude and anti social it is but don't care.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/02/2024 21:58

Yes! Once I asked this guy to turn it down and he just blanked me and stared straight ahead. This wound me up more 😂

eurochick · 08/02/2024 21:58

It makes shitty public transport notably shitter. It's so antisocial.

I'd never tell someone to turn it off for fear of getting knived of something. But my phone hotspot is called "use headphones you twat" #passiveaggressive.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/02/2024 21:58

I meant yes I agree with you. Not unreasonable at all

owlsinthedaylight · 08/02/2024 22:14

But why do people do it? Why? What is their thought process? What goes through their head? I absolutely cannot comprehend being that oblivious or self centred.

I would be utterly mortified. I would be more likely to go out dressed in a transparent raincoat and a thong than to accidentally subject someone to my music/podcast/video. When I am using my wireless headphones I always start the content playing with one ear free, so I can be sure they are connected and I’m not accidentally blasting music.

pepperaunt · 08/02/2024 22:19

I once had to endure an hour-long train journey listening to a woman talk to her friend on speakerphone about a failed relationship. Only the presence of DH prevented me from saying “honey, you’re just a booty call to him”. It was so obvious, and I was sort of hoping her friend would say it.

NamelessGhoul · 08/02/2024 22:21

Growuppeople · 08/02/2024 19:49

You can buy wireless earbuds for £20 probaly even less it’s not an excuse
I hate it!

You can do it cheaper than that, a headphone Jack adapter that plugs into the charge port is about £3 on amazon and works with any headphones with Jack connection.

bombastix · 08/02/2024 22:21

Yes. Hateful people they are.
