Quite often when I've been on busy buses, there's been someone playing a TV programme out loud on their phone speaker, or they've been having a loud video call with no headphones.

I find this so annoying! Aaaa!

AIBU to think that this shouldn't be tolerated on public transport?

I'm on a bus right now, and the sound is blaring out into the whole bus! This has happened often.

I mean obviously you are right. But unless there is:
Someone playing tinny music out of their phone
Someone smelling so bad no one can sit in the surrounding rows
Someone talking to themselves
Are you even on a bus?

PurpleSaucepan · 08/02/2024 19:42

YANBU

JaneKatSuttonGoals · 08/02/2024 19:44

Yes please.
Can we extend the ban to small children in restaurants blasting out peppa pig or bluey.
At least teenagers tend to be watching tiktok videos rather than changing their ringtone and going through all the options on the bus which was my personal favourite at 8am on the way to work.....

DappledThings · 08/02/2024 19:44

I often fantasise in these situations about developing a superpower that allows me to turn down the volume via telekinesis. Every offender would get one chance. They have anything playing out loud, I turn it to zero. They turn it up again I fry their device with the power of my mind.

Moier · 08/02/2024 19:46

I'm not often on a bus.. but took a ride with my daughter and Grandson..some young woman ( about 30ish) was on her phone giving the caller all her personal details.. like security questions.. address and everything.. we could all hear..
Then she rang her GP and we could all hear she had a UTI and itching down below.
🤷‍♀️

You can blame Apple for this, they were the first to get rid of the headphone jack so you could only use expensive, easy to lose Airpods and not a cheapy corded set.

I just travel everywhere with my own set of noise cancelling earbuds these days.

You can buy wireless earbuds for £20 probaly even less it’s not an excuse
I hate it!

CheesecakeandCrackers · 08/02/2024 19:52

All of the above irritation. I went to do circuits round our local park yesterday and a lady was doing the same and I couldn't get away from her bloody music blaring out of the phone in her pocket. It really gave me the rage, there's no excuse. I broke my headphones on a long journey a few months ago and was gutted but I put up and shut up rather than playing my phone out loud for all to hear!

SongbirdGarden · 08/02/2024 19:56

People who sit and have a long loud phone conversations on public transport, like no one else is there. Zero self awareness that they are being very annoying, irritating, as well as extremely tiresome. Why do they insist on inflicting there
dull and boring conversations on everyone else.

10ThousandSpoons · 08/02/2024 19:58

Yes! Happened to me this morning. whyyyyy

greengreengrass25 · 08/02/2024 20:01

Yes stfu

I don't want to hear your drivel or music

ZoeCM · 08/02/2024 20:03

I once had to sit opposite a stag party on a train blaring out music through a stereo. I would rather have been waterboarded.

It just blends into the general noise of the bus. Buses are not particularly quiet are they?

The issue is surely that it doesn't blend

Meowandthen · 08/02/2024 20:10

It should be a capital offence.

Pollyannamex · 08/02/2024 20:12

It’s always the people with the worst music taste who do this

i hate them all

Twotothreeagain · 08/02/2024 20:12

YANBU. Same with children watching loud cartoons or YouTube videos on iPads on trains/planes - aargh!

Fredthefrog · 08/02/2024 20:13

Buses and trains aren't that loud.the tinny sound cuts through the general noise. Babies can't help it. Anyone listening to their crap out loud should lose their device. I know no one can police it becuase people are selfish arseholes. The apologists on here are probably those selfish people inflicting their taste on people and to them I day get headphones and know i hate you.

Vinorosso74 · 08/02/2024 20:15

Lock them up amd throw away the key! It's so annoying! It's not a noise you can switch off from.
It's people of all ages. I don't want to be subjected to someone's shitty music, stupid videos, a random preacher or video calls with screaming kids in the background.
Headphones people! That's what they wre invented for.

OneTC · 08/02/2024 20:18

I miss the good old days of only having headphones to complain about Grin

StripyBathTowel · 08/02/2024 20:20

I hate it too. And this thread has just given me an idea - next time someone is doing it next to me, I’m going to take out my phone and play some really obnoxious music full blast next to them. Maybe Venga boys or James Blunt or something.

OneTC · 08/02/2024 20:20

That's what they wre invented for.

Also to block out other people's noise, that's always how I've used them. Music is a bonus. People using phone speakers is just one of the catalogue of annoying things that people do.

OpalOrchid · 08/02/2024 19:18

It really doesn’t. It just means that everyone is forced to listen to your shit.

tunainatin · 08/02/2024 20:23

I just can't believe the audacity of people who do it! In some ways I wish I had the level of obliviousness to other people's comfort. And isn't it kind of embarrassing to air your taste in music/podcasts so publicly? The mind boggles!

ConsuelaHammock · 08/02/2024 20:26

I asked a man in m and s a few months ago why he was using his loudspeaker to have a conversation while walking around the shop? I could hear him from several aisles away and his lack of awareness of other shoppers just PISSED me off. He asked me if I had a problem so I said I did. And that other shoppers probably weren’t too keen either but were too polite to say anything. I continued shopping and didn’t hear him after that. Perhaps he got the hint. People should be called out on their selfish behaviour. Dicks!

ConsuelaHammock · 08/02/2024 20:28

I am determined to call people out on their shitty behaviour from now on. I’m a menopausal women in her late forties who frankly doesn’t give a shit anymore!

It’s bad enough on public transport but I had to endure it in a hospital ward a few months ago and the nurses just turned a blind eye.

It's some years ago now, but my mum was in a hospital ward where every bed had a TV. These TVs were set to come on automatically, and you had to be proactive if you wanted to turn one off. Given that some patients struggled to reach or manipulate the remote controls, and some were asleep, or not fully compos mentis, at any given time there were several TVs blaring out without anyone even watching them. So much for getting some rest and recuperation.
