Wanting a new pram for second baby?

mhn1 · 07/02/2024 09:52

Hi!

so we were lucky enough to be gifted a new pram for our first child by the grandparents! Loved the pram, however the hood of the pram is absolutely plastered in mould from being stored in our garage :(
I’ve looked everywhere for a replacement hood but it was a limited edition colour so this is unlikely.
we had first child in the middle of covid so we never had the experience of pram shopping really (we went for what my SIL had so we knew it was decent!). I do feel like we missed out with this as the pram just feels like a big thing for me.
anyway, am I being unreasonable for wanting to go out and get a new pram for 2nd? It will be our last baby so want to make the most!

Seriously no one else will care

BoohooWoohoo · 07/02/2024 09:56

I don’t understand the question.
Have the grandparents said something?

SmileyClare · 07/02/2024 09:57

Well you need a pram that’s not mouldy?!

I don’t see anything unreasonable about needing to buy a pram?

It would be unreasonable to ask the grandparents to pay (again) because you haven’t kept their last gifted one stored in a dry place.

My advice would be to work out your budget and buy within your means. There are second hand prams in good condition on local FB etc.

mhn1 · 07/02/2024 10:02

Thanks for your replies :)

we would definitely buy ourselves this time! I’m not sure if others would expect me to try and clean it up but I suppose that’s our decision 🙄

Have you contacted manufacturer for hood

you can wash it probably

just seems a waste of £100’s that could be better spent also if I was grandparent that paid for first pram I’d be mighty pissed off

DistinguishedSocialCommenator · 07/02/2024 10:11

OP
We as grandparents gifted an expensive cot, clothing , pramand cash to a grandchild a few years. The pram, looking back, me and my OH were being practiacl, EG it was a nice mid ranga one but also compact. Come a new grandchild last year our son told us they were getting a new, bigger pram - I nearly fell out of my chair when he told me the price - We understand how you feel and if you want a new one for whatever reason, go for it.

We inc our children look after things - once you have used it and if its in good conditon you can sell it or give it to family/friends

Zoomerang · 07/02/2024 10:11

I’d just get a new hood in a different colour. No one will notice or care.

If you want to spend several hundred pounds (or more) to get yourself a ‘pram shopping by experience’, however, do that.

MimiSunshine · 07/02/2024 10:11

Buy a new pram if that’s what you want to do. But honestly, it’s really not an experience you’ve missed out on.

in reality when it’s your 1st it’s a mind boggling’why are these things all so similar but wildly vary in price’ headache.

presumably you like yours and will most likely end up getting something really similar if not the same brand anyway.

just contact the manufacturer and they may well send you one. Or get the same hood in a different colour, it really won’t matter.

NoCloudsAllowed · 07/02/2024 10:12

You mean there are replacement hoods but they just don't match the colour?

If so, yes YABU just get one that doesn't match.

The 'experience of pram shopping' being something you miss out on - go to a shop and pretend you're buying one if it matters that much to you, sounds ridiculous to me tbh!

The pram took materials and labour to make, cost hundreds of pounds of someone else's money to buy, you didn't store it properly, it could be easily remedied but you want a nice consumer experience and matchy colours so it can go to the landfill for a couple of hundred years while you get another one...

snowlady4 · 07/02/2024 10:13

I would do both.- presuming you can afford it.
Buy yourself the new one that you want. But I'd also have a good go at cleaning up the mouldy one. Mould will come off. Then you can either use it as a second pram, to leave at your parents or something or give it away to someone/sell it. It seems a little ungrateful to throw away a very generous present because you've let it spoil in the garage.- not judging, where else would you put it?-sure it happens all the time- hence the huge number of videos on "how to get mould off a pram!"
Sounds like you've got your heart set on buying a new one anyway- enjoy your new purchase! And congratulations 🎊

senua · 07/02/2024 10:15

it was a limited edition colour
Say what now?

boomingaround · 07/02/2024 10:15

Wash the hood surely? Then the problem would be sorted.

I would be pretty offended as a grandparent if I'd spent a grand on a pram for my grandchild only for the parents to buy a brand new one for the second baby.

If you're desperate to go pram shopping then go and get a small lightweight buggy or similar to use on holiday or as your second pram.

InTheRainOnATrain · 07/02/2024 10:16

Presuming you’ve washed it with something like dettol laundry cleanser and still no luck then can you get a whole new fabric set for the pram you have so that it matches? I’d only buy a new pram if the old one didn’t meet my needs and this time like I wanted something much lighter or needed a double. Otherwise just seems massively wasteful, going round John Lewis or wherever isn’t much of an experience!

Vexxa · 07/02/2024 10:17

How old is your older child? If they're still little I'd buy a double pram as your new one, and wash the hood of the single.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 07/02/2024 10:20

do not bother- just clean the hood or get a non matching replacement. Unless you have a load of money it’s a waste, put the money for a new pram in a savings account

Crunchymum · 07/02/2024 10:20

Get a non "limited edition colour" hood.

Ponoka7 · 07/02/2024 10:21

Give the pram to charity, someone will be grateful for it. Buy the new pram. I bought a new pram for both my GC, same parents.

SpraggleWaggle · 07/02/2024 10:22

You can spend your own money on whatever you want.

Toutdelafroot · 07/02/2024 10:23

Do whatever the hell you want. You don't need a reason to get a new pram- if you fancy one just get one.

wallywotwot · 07/02/2024 10:24

Honestly I'm super impressed you still give a shit about 'pram buying experience' for your second child.

My pram buying experience:

Dropped shit loads of money at JL on some really nice (expensive) gear.
Less than 6 months later bought a different pram online because the first expensive park was too nice (and heavy) to use day to day and is now caked in every different substance known to man.

Should have bought secondhand because the 'nice new' bit lasted a week or so!

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/02/2024 10:25

Different coloured hood?

Moier · 07/02/2024 10:26

Why not if you can afford it.
My ( now adult children) are 8 years apart.. l didn't save first pram.. bought new one for second .. was a wonderful feeling.

Penguinmouse · 07/02/2024 10:30

You can spend your money on what you want but kind of mad to buy a whole new pram because the hood doesn’t match… also pram shopping is not that interesting; you have a child, you’ve used the pram a lot so anything you need to know about the way it handles you’d already know rather than running it over a bit of artificial grass in a shop.

EverydayParis · 07/02/2024 10:32

If it’s M&P they have a refurb service, called valet, for £125 https://www.mamasandpapas.com/pages/pushchair-valet-service

I second contacting the brand to see if they sell spares. I bought a travel system second hand and bought new wheels for it.

It sounds like you have no other issue with your pram so you might be disappointed with a different one. So be open minded that the shopping experience might lead you to the one you’ve got. If you want to, go for it, but maybe you can channel the experience to something you don’t have yet like BabyBjorn or Boori stuff. There’s so many cute baby things demanding money.

HJ40 · 07/02/2024 10:33

If you have enough money to piss up the wall, then crack on. It's no one else's business.

Especially with a second child on the way, Mr & Mrs Average normally have to be a bit careful with the pennies; there are companies that could do you a mould removal and deep clean for less than a new one.
