Wanting a new pram for second baby?

mhn1 · 07/02/2024 09:52

Hi!

so we were lucky enough to be gifted a new pram for our first child by the grandparents! Loved the pram, however the hood of the pram is absolutely plastered in mould from being stored in our garage :(
I’ve looked everywhere for a replacement hood but it was a limited edition colour so this is unlikely.
we had first child in the middle of covid so we never had the experience of pram shopping really (we went for what my SIL had so we knew it was decent!). I do feel like we missed out with this as the pram just feels like a big thing for me.
anyway, am I being unreasonable for wanting to go out and get a new pram for 2nd? It will be our last baby so want to make the most!

Have you tried washing the hood properly with mould remover to get rid of the mould? I think it is a bit unreasonable to get a new pram when you already have one tbh, too much waste in the world already. But if you can't get the mould off then I would get a new one because it's not going to be healthy for the new baby

SmileyClare · 07/02/2024 10:38

It’s not clear what you’re worried about?

A) the grandparents will be pissed off that you’re not making use of the pram they bought you?

B) Partner isn’t on board with spending 1k+ on a new pram?

Or C) you’re not sure if you can justify spending that amount of money on a pram?

If you keep the new pram clean and store it carefully, you may well be able to recoup some the money by selling it ?

Another option might be to ask your SIL (if she has the same pram) She might be willing to sell or gift hers to you?

Hankunamatata · 07/02/2024 10:40

Get the hood dry cleaned. If its a super expensive buggy then sell on

dietirnbruqueen · 07/02/2024 10:42

What’s the make and model of the pram?

TeenyTinyWiney · 07/02/2024 10:43

Buy the pram. You only live once etc. I don't know that pram shopping is particularly exciting though and I love shopping!

We had two. One bought by pils (cheap off amazon) and a secondhand Uppababy Vista.

notacooldad · 07/02/2024 10:44

it was a limited edition colour
Say what now?

😂

uncomfortablydumb53 · 07/02/2024 10:45

It doesn't matter if the limited edition hood doesn't match the rest, it really doesn't.
I would contact the manufacturers first to see if you can buy a replacement, in a contrasting colour
That's a " new pram" for your baby!
Buy a new travel pushchair instead

TeenDivided · 07/02/2024 10:45

Of all the things I feel I missed out on given we adopted, buying a brand new pram is definitely not one of them!

But if you can afford it and you really don't have anything better to spend your money on, then go for it.

Nasty stuff. Wouldn’t want any residue near a newborn.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 07/02/2024 10:47

Why wouldn't you just get a pram hood in a different colour? Personally I'd rather spend the money on something more fun (weekend away, day out for eldest at a theme park or something) but if you can afford it I'm not sure why you'd be unreasonable to buy something you want, with your own money

Himawarigirl · 07/02/2024 10:52

Can you not get the hood in a different colour? Seems v wasteful to buy a new one just to have a shopping experience.

phoenixrosehere · 07/02/2024 10:58

I definitely bought a new pram with our second.

Hated the pram we were given which was actually a mistake of communication between MIL and FIL who had ordered one for their daughter. MIL hadn’t known it arrived so told the company it hadn’t showed so they sent her a new one. FIL had put it in the garage and didn’t tell MIL. Instead of returning it, they asked DH if we wanted it and he said yes without telling me until afterwards. The pram was suitable for where they lived but impractical for where we lived and for me being someone who doesn’t drive. I cursed it every time I had to leave the house because I struggled getting it out the doo, but didn’t have a legitimate reason to get rid of it.

Due with DS2, bought an icandy double pram and love that thing. Have had it for 6 years and used it almost daily so definitely got my money’s worth and can sell it on and get some money back. It was very helpful with DS1 and DS2 who were 2.5 years apart. Found out DS1 was autistic at 3, diagnosed at 5 and gave him a safe space. We went all over with that pram.

Now using it with DD1 with DS2 riding on to drop him at school before going on errands.

LolaSmiles · 07/02/2024 10:59

I'd probably buy a new fabric set set that's in one colour for the whole pram. A lot of companies do this and some will also sell additional parts as well like Bugaboo do.

It seems silly to spend a lot of money on a new pram to have the right pram shopping experience, but if you have the money to spend and that's your priority that's your decision.

CoffeeMachineNewbie · 07/02/2024 11:01

I think it's very wasteful not to just replace the hood and I'd be too tight to do it as I'd rather have the money but I totally understand where you are coming from. It's your last baby, it's your money and if it makes you happy then why not.

The planet is totally fucked at an international scale and doesnt hinge on you buying a new pram.

Edited to add that one of the things I liked about reusing things was the sentimental feeling of it being a family item that anchored my life as a mum to little ones. It's silly but I like to think that when we are older we will look at photos and say oh i remember that pram/coat etc, it went everywhere!

phoenixrosehere · 07/02/2024 11:05

Forgot to add, that I gave the old pram to someone else who was looking for one.

HerculesMulligan · 07/02/2024 11:05

Have you tried a Buggy Valet service? We used one to clean our pram between babies and were delighted with the result. I know of one in Manchester and one in SW London - both excellent.

TheFairyCaravan · 07/02/2024 11:09

I think it’s really wasteful and imo you should try to clean it up.

We bought our DGS’s pram. DDIL and DS2 chose what they wanted, and it can be converted into a double. It cost over £1k (I know it’s ridiculous but our pram was £500 30yrs ago so…), if they shove it in the garage and it ends up covered in mould I won’t be very happy.

MrsToriCostner · 07/02/2024 11:13

I don't really understand the question.

I don't understand why are you are so bothered about what others are expecting you to do? Who are these others?

If you want to buy a new pram, get one.

BertieBotts · 07/02/2024 11:14

You can't use a mouldy pram with a newborn, horrific idea, it is such a hazard to their health. It needs to go to the tip unfortunately. Assuming the hood was stored with the pram anyway. If the hood was stored separately and it's literally only the hood which was mouldy, then it's OK to just replace the hood (even with a different colour) or sell/give away the pram without the hood.

Assuming the pram was stored with hood, you need to assume that the mould spores are everywhere in the pram and scrap it.

housefacelift24 · 07/02/2024 11:17

Who's got 1k knocking about for the experience factor of buying a new pram !?

Motherofpearlxoxo · 07/02/2024 11:20

As if so many people have said you are being unreasonable! It’s mouldy and old and if your uncomfortable pregnant state you will get some joy out of getting a pram then do it!

Enjoy it!

GodspeedJune · 07/02/2024 11:20

You can’t ever completely get rid of mould spores, even by washing. All the fabrics that have been affected need to be binned. Like a PP said, you may be able to buy a new set of fabrics from the manufacturer. If not, don’t feel bad about replacing it. You really can’t use the mouldy parts ever again.

junteen · 07/02/2024 11:22

It's fine. We had a total of 9 prams/pushchairs between 2 dc! Their needs change, the technology changes. You can get them in excellent condition second hand.

TeenyTinyWiney · 07/02/2024 11:23

Totally agree with you @BertieBotts. I'm far from a clean freak, but it is categorically not wasteful to dump a mouldy pram.

mondaytosunday · 07/02/2024 11:25

Prams are so pricey I'd be doing what I can to get rid of the mould, or get a new cover made, if that's the only issue with it.
