Wanting a new pram for second baby?

Hi!

so we were lucky enough to be gifted a new pram for our first child by the grandparents! Loved the pram, however the hood of the pram is absolutely plastered in mould from being stored in our garage :(
I’ve looked everywhere for a replacement hood but it was a limited edition colour so this is unlikely.
we had first child in the middle of covid so we never had the experience of pram shopping really (we went for what my SIL had so we knew it was decent!). I do feel like we missed out with this as the pram just feels like a big thing for me.
anyway, am I being unreasonable for wanting to go out and get a new pram for 2nd? It will be our last baby so want to make the most!

its your money! but i would spend mine on something more useful tbh! a pram is used for such a short time

im having my second soon and not even bothering with a pram this time - i live in london and found a sling so much easier than the pram getting around anyway! gonna leave my 2 year old in her stroller and use sling for the baby! in 6 months time will revisit the situation and our needs

Totally agree with you @BertieBotts. I'm far from a clean freak, but it is categorically not wasteful to dump a mouldy pram.

Except it isn't a mouldy pram.

It's a mouldy hood and from the sounds of it OP would have been happy to keep the pram if she could get a replacement hood in the right limited edition colour.

Many decent makes sell whole fabric sets so the pram can be reused/parents can update the colours if they want to / they can replace the bits they need if one gets stained or damaged without needing to replace the whole pram.

Obviously if the OP wants a new pram and a pram shopping experience that's up to her though.

just wanted to say I TOTALLY get you feeling the way you do. We have a lock down bub and definitely feel like we missed out on so much of that fun stuff.

And of course as long as you weren’t living in a war zone/Covid wasn’t getting your family members you were doing well - we were grateful too. But our first baby clothes were just grabbed from Asda because all the other shops were shut. We couldnt take the bub out to be cooed over - they were not newborn by the time anyone could meet them. Finances also wrecked by lockdown so no toys/clothes/nursery decor. We had to downsize so no nursery full stop.

it really sucks and I think it’s nice to do those things with your second kid because why not?! The stress of having a lock down kid you deserve it!

If you’re going to use it and it’s going to make you feel happy defo buy a new pram. And anyway, mould is awful for babies so I’d not keep it anyway. The spores float about so it won’t be just the where you see it. The baby is lying in it breathing close up so best get rid. Don’t feel it’s indulgent. But remember they’re annoying clunky things which get bashed about so don’t spend crazy money if you can’t afford to!

Might be worth checking in case there's a pram cleaning company near you. There's one near me (Glasgow) and the before and after photos are incredible, they take really disgusting prams and clean them up. Think it's £50-60 though obviously different companies might charge more. But still much cheaper than a whole new pram!

Nosleepforthismum · 07/02/2024 13:13

I think it’s quite sweet to be as excited for the second baby and want to shop for a new pram. Having said that, I’m assuming you have money to burn and loads of storage space. I’m assuming your first is quite a bit older? I had to get a double buggy when my second was born and it’s been a lifesaver. If I was in your position though, I’d use the old pram with the carrycot and buy a decent, lightweight stroller for when they are a little bigger.

do not bother- just clean the hood or get a non matching replacement. Unless you have a load of money it’s a waste, put the money for a new pram in a savings account

Yes, I’d do this. Scrub the living daylights out of it until it’s clean - and save the money for your DC.

I’d still go to John Lewis and try out all the prams - and then not buy one.

I didn't realize 'pram shopping' was one of life's big milestones.....

Just buy the hood in a standard colour.

Goldbar · 07/02/2024 14:20

I bought a new pram for my second child.

First pram was a bit of a tank. It was one of those huge ones that can convert to a double buggy as I had visions of a 2 year age gap between kids and was planning for the future.

DC2 took their time coming - 5 year age gap. We live in a city so walk and jump on buses a lot. It seemed anti-social to have a pram that took up the entire buggy space. 5yo DC1 was already used to walking long distances and super-tall so wouldn't have fitted in a double buggy anyway. So we got rid of the first pram and bought something that was still very robust, but much more compact.

Your needs change between children.

Tandora · 07/02/2024 14:26

Can’t you just get a hood in a diff colour ?

Excited101 · 07/02/2024 14:31

You can’t wash out mould spores, they sit in fabric being breathed in. If there’s any risk that mould is elsewhere on the pram then a new one is a no brainer. Any idea if there was some gunk on the hood which could have caused the mould?

Lifebeganat50 · 07/02/2024 14:31

Just own the fact that you want a new pram.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 07/02/2024 14:36

If you can’t replace the hood, seems fine but why waste money on a new one? There’s so many good second hand ones, and you’ll be doing the planet a favour

She could also give the old one away even if she bought a new one from the shop.

ColleenDonaghy · 07/02/2024 15:38

Get a new one if you want but it does seem like a waste if you liked the first one. Just replace the hood, or all the soft bits if you really can't find one that you think matches well enough.

I once saw someone say on a FB baby group that she had the XYZ buggy with her first and she really liked it, but she had it in blue and was having a girl this time so she had to get something else. Had to.

MrsCarson · 07/02/2024 16:26

I'd take the hood off and clean it with mould and mildew remover then wash it off and leave it to dry. Then see what it looks like. The rest of the pram may have mould in the creases and need a good scrub too.
If you really liked the pram it'll be lovely to use it again.

BertieBotts · 09/02/2024 13:05

Right but it's quite likely the hood has been stored with the pram. Which means that it's extremely unlikely the mould is just in the hood. It's probably on the pram itself as well.

If the hood had been stored totally separately then fine, but I wouldn't want to use a pram where part of it has gone mouldy.
