to not do Safeguarding training?

I belong to a church, and occasionally serve coffee at the end of the service. I am being asked to take Safeguarding training, which I think is utterly pointless.
I have expressed this and been told that it's policy, and I have to do it.
AIBU to just stop doing coffee?

@Itsdifferentnow why would the OP want to make herself even more useful? Maybe this is much useful as she wants to be?

Do you think she only wants to be seen to be a good church member and get a pat on the back not to actually do good ?

I'd ask to see this policy.

The only training you need surely is to know who their designated safeguarding officer is, so that you can refer anything to them.

However, in order to refer to the designated safeguarding officer they need to be able to recognise what is a safeguarding concern , whether this is a child or adult issue.

Have you done this basic training? Signs if safeguarding concerns are an adult previously well dressed looking dirty and dishevelled and bruising without any explanation. If you need training to identify this, I despair.

Sometimes signs are much more subtle. Sometimes the person may say something - testing the waters. Are you being deliberately obtuse?

herewegoagainy · 13/02/2024 17:35

@AnnieSnap No. But the very basic training does not tend to do subtlety. It is all obvious stuff.

@Sausagenbacon have you not heard of a dozen safeguarding/abuse issues in churches just in the last year, especially what happened at Soul Survivor with Mike Pilavachi? It's complacent attitudes like yours that meant he was working with young people for DECADES without being brought up for his inappropriate behaviour. You shouldn't be volunteering unless you do the training.
