To serve this at a kids party?

party for 6 year old. It’s in a hall. Venue doesn’t do food or have a kitchen, it’s around dinner time so I’m not sure the usual sandwich would be appropriate. I was thinking of ordering a few large margarita pizzas and having veg sticks as well. With a piece of fruit and small packet of biscuits for each child too. It’s not healthy I know! Would you be ok with takeaway pizza ? Any alternatives or anything else I should serve with it?

My DS would have hoovered up any veggie sticks that the others didn't want but being dairy allergic he wouldn't have been able to eat the pizza. I wouldn't have been bothered about that though, as long as I knew so that I could send something suitable for him.

Benicebenicebenice · 02/02/2024 17:10

Pizza, a drink and a slice of birthday cake!

All my dc love veggie sticks and fruit. It's not that unusual.

I loved fruit and veg as a child too, but if I was at a party I still wouldn't have chosen them over a slice of pizza. Pretty sure that when I went to parties as a kid, I made a fairly conscious decision to forego the carrot sticks and slices of apple in favour of the iced gems and chocolate mini-rolls.

Yep but this is MN where kids choose Kale instead of cake.

herbygarden · 02/02/2024 17:17

The kids will love this!

whenitsover · 02/02/2024 17:45

I did this at a recent birthday party - I ordered a load of
dominos, went down well! I also had sandwiches and veg sticks and other snacks out for the party so those kids who were hungry could eat. Can also save on cost a bit if you have sandwiches out, as it reduces the amount of pizza to buy

How many kids are coming and how many pizzas are you going to order? My experience is you need more than you think, some kids early A LOT

This is true, we ordered 6 large pizzas and a gluten free large for 12 kids, then 4 lots of garlic bread. I think at the end we were left with less than half of one pizza - 10/11 yo boys eat a lot! Some crusts were also left.
Well worth it though to not have to do any sort of food prep. I certainly wouldn’t be ordering pizzas aswell as making sandwiches and cutting up fruit/veg sticks!

Metallicant · 02/02/2024 19:00

We did this a few times when my children were younger and it was always hugely popular.

And very few of the veg sticks got eaten!

DinnaeFashYersel · 02/02/2024 19:08

Pizza will be fine. No need for anything else except juice and cake.

Jk8 · 02/02/2024 21:09

Lol no. Just pizza/garlic bread would be fine nobody lines up for vegetables sticks

Stayanotherway · 02/02/2024 21:56

Thank you so much for all of your thoughtful replies! Seems like I’ve started quite the veg stick debate!!

R.e. veg- I will put some bowls of cucumber/carrot/peppers out. If nothing else, DD loves them. Thinking back to class parties last year, when bowls of veg sticks were put out, they were all emptied.

The same with fruit- I will put some out. A party meal is still one of the 3 meals each kid will have in that day. Might as well at least attempt to get some of their 5 a day in!

Some great ideas that I will definitely take on board! Crisps, backup sandwiches, fruit kebabs. One poster said that their kids would be angry at the mere presence of fruit so I do hope they are not at the party.

I have asked for dietary requirements on the invitation so that’s taken care of.

Someone mentioned fizzy drinks. Absolutely not! Squash and water is fairly standard here. I haven’t been to a kids party with fizzy drinks ever and I don’t allow DD to drink them.

I served fizzy drinks, all the kids had them apart from one little girl who sadly asked me if she could have some water as her mum didn’t allow her fizzy drinks, I felt quite sad for her, I think occasionally it’s fine.

NachosAndCheese · 02/02/2024 22:11

One of my DC doesn’t actually like fizzy drinks as they’re ‘spicy’.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 02/02/2024 22:15

DDs 8th party we did this, just ordered a load of buy 1 get 1 free Dominos pizzas for delivery. Stuck to veggie and margherita to avoid anything overly spicy or vegetarians accidentally getting ham or whatever.

I did over order though so people went home with leftovers, luckily I'd taken a box of big ziplock bags so had a way of sending it home other than shoving it in the kids pockets 😂

Easiest of all the parties we've done so far, someone else bought it to the venue, no tidy up beyond putting the boxes in the bin.

Ladybird909 · 02/02/2024 22:16

Definitely need several packets of chocolate fingers, they always get devoured

coxesorangepippin · 02/02/2024 22:16

It's fine

Don't bother with the fruit or biscuits

Just pizza and cake

Stayanotherway · 02/02/2024 22:36

At 5/6yo? Really? Is this common?

adriftinadenofvipers · 02/02/2024 22:39

Kids' birthday parties aren't meant for healthy food!

Pizza is fine but maybe have something else for children who might not like it. Maybe some chicken goujons?

Divebar2021 · 02/02/2024 23:12

It’s been a while since we went to a birthday party but I can assure you veg sticks were eaten, fruit was eaten, houmous and breadsticks were eaten. Fizzy drinks were mostly not provided but squash was. I don’t have an issue with the pizza / cake options but I hate a spread of beige food.

NewName24 · 03/02/2024 00:48

Not sure why sandwiches "wouldn't be appropriate" because it is at dinner time Confused

However, if you can afford it, ordering in pizza is far less hassle / work.
Like so many others, I wouldn't bother with veg sticks, or fruit myself.

Bit OTT reaction to dc having some fizzy pop. We don't drink it at home but aren't parties all about being 'treats' rather than fussing about a balance of healthy and nutritious food and drink ?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/02/2024 01:15

My DS would love pizza/garlic bread
My DD would hoover up cherry tomatoes

DocOck · 03/02/2024 10:29

OP the kids went mad for the fruit at my DS's party the other week. Especially the strawberries!

soupfiend · 03/02/2024 10:30

Who's going to eat the veggie sticks??!!

They'll go straight in the bin

CattingAbout · 03/02/2024 10:35

There's at least 3 kids in DC1s class (out of 20) who don't like pizza so I think some sort of alternative might be nice so they aren't left having just carrot sticks to eat. Agree with pp maybe chicken nuggets/goujons.

DGPP · 03/02/2024 10:42

All the kids at the parties I go to eat veg sticks and fruit! Mine love them
