To serve this at a kids party?

party for 6 year old. It’s in a hall. Venue doesn’t do food or have a kitchen, it’s around dinner time so I’m not sure the usual sandwich would be appropriate. I was thinking of ordering a few large margarita pizzas and having veg sticks as well. With a piece of fruit and small packet of biscuits for each child too. It’s not healthy I know! Would you be ok with takeaway pizza ? Any alternatives or anything else I should serve with it?

Pizza is fine, I would think parents would let you know before hand for gluten/dairy issues though maybe just order one in case it will still be eaten !. I would do bowls of crisps and perhaps cherry tomatoes/ cucumber/peppers though I wouldn’t go mad but some kids will eat them. Squash to drink ( my granddaughters went to a party and was given a water bottle with her name written on - the parents hand obviously done it, this will filled with squash then went home with her as part of the party bag, she loved it ). Mini Swiss roll/choc fingers/fairy cakes for afters

don’t forget loads of paper plates / napkins bin bags and wet wipes !

See where I'm from Sandwiches are fine for dinner. Assuming you mean tea? (Evening meal) 😂😂

LonelyBones · 02/02/2024 12:52

Pizzas are perfect. If you can, handle and serve your pizzas with plastic catering gloves if possible. More hygienic.

Put out some nibbles, like crisps, sausage rolls, mini rolls, biscuits for those kids that are rabid hungry and cant wait for food time (always my kids!)

I say yes to veggies and fruits. 😊

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 02/02/2024 12:53

Pizza sounds great. I also like the idea of some veg sticks. I wouldn’t mother with fruit though. Maybe just have some crisps/biscuits/cakes aswell but not particularly needed.

mindutopia · 02/02/2024 12:54

Pizza is totally fine. It's standard party fare. In the past, we cooked pizzas at home, cut them up into finger sized strips and served them cold, with sausage rolls, some veg, biscuits and cake. Last year we did a party at a venue and the only party option was pizza and chips.

Bournetilly · 02/02/2024 12:54

Pizza is good. I would do the veg sticks as there’s always children who eat it (just don’t do loads).

YouAndMeAndThem · 02/02/2024 12:55

My kids would be raging if they went to a party and all there was was healthy food! Even if they came to your party and had pizza (great choice imo!) Then got handed a piece of fruit?! They'd be confused. Berries or grapes are different but a banana or a satsuma? Nah.

Fine I did this - note, the veggie sticks don’t get eaten :)

Depending on the day my child would either love the veg sticks or completely ignore them.

CoalCraft · 02/02/2024 12:57

I'd be delighted! Ditch the veg and order some garlic bread and chicken strips in case anyone doesn't like pizza (there's always one) and just have a big bowl of fruit available for them to help themselves.

TookTheBook · 02/02/2024 13:01

Don't do what we did and serve just pizza and then find out one child was allergic to dairy and they and the parents hadn't told us! Luckily the child was old enough to ask "what can I eat?" but WTF. He went hungry. I was upset for the kid.

chantelion · 02/02/2024 13:03

Never understand why people serve veggie sticks and dips as a snack at a party for kids. Maybe makes them feel like they put on a spread. It never gets eaten at the best of times, definitely not at a party. Pizza and cake will go down well.

We went to party where the parents had decided not to bother with the veg sticks. My very confused DS asked the mum where the cherry tomatoes were (he was only four so can be forgiven). Luckily she pulled a packet out the fridge and all the kids pounced on them!

DocOck · 02/02/2024 13:06

I love all the veg sticks comments, I did a party last week and they were NAILED. I wish I'd done more 😲(and this was alongside sandwiches, pizza, crisps, biscuits, cake...)

stopringingme · 02/02/2024 13:21

My DD wouldn't eat the pizza but would eat carrot batons, baby corn and all colours of peppers.

Comedycook · 02/02/2024 13:27

I'd put out veg sticks...I actually have found they get eaten and a lot of parents are actually grateful that there's something reasonably healthy on offer

Whitewolf2 · 02/02/2024 13:45

Pizzas are great, we did this for last dd birthday. I agree having some other party bits is a good idea, if it’s all you have there’s bound to be one kid who doesn’t like pizza (or takes against the type of pizza you have)!

penjil · 02/02/2024 13:47

When you say dinner time, do you mean lunch?

YankSplaining · 02/02/2024 13:49

Is this unusual in the UK? Here in the US, pizza is like the default food for kids’ parties.

So I say you are not being unreasonable. 😁

UnhealthyCopingStrategies · 02/02/2024 13:53

Exactly what I did when my son was 6. Ordered pizza, had cucumber and carrot sticks and punnets of blueberries, may have had crisps too, some party rings and of course birthday cake.

DragonFly98 · 02/02/2024 13:54

Growlybear83 · 02/02/2024 12:44

How bizarre - why would you think I'm 40? I'm 66 and I've yet to find a young child who would eat fruit or vegetable sticks when they were out of sight of their parents if there was anything else available !

The 83 could have been your year of birth 1983. All my dc love veggie sticks and fruit. It's not that unusual.

Shf · 02/02/2024 13:56

Pizza is fine BUT do check if all the kids eat cheese. Neither of mine do, the weirdos, so they wouldn’t be able to eat anything but veg sticks.

Poachedeggs1 · 02/02/2024 14:00

Totally fine to order in pizzas. I never expected my children to eat any healthy food at parties, and if they did, it was a bonus. I also never assumed my child would be fed a hot meal at a party either, so sandwiches would be perfectly acceptable too. Perhaps some bowls of crisps, popcorn and some biscuits/haribo scattered on the tables too. Make it easy for yourself. My child went to a party and then the mum got fish and chips delivered from the local chip shop. It was devoured! Kids loved it. They survived not eating carrot sticks/fruit for that couple of hours 😉

Flatulence · 02/02/2024 14:11

Pizza is a good choice. It's a kids' party so no one expects it to be a health fest.
I'd do the carrot sticks and fruit. Most kids I know love both and will have them alongside their pizza.
As others have said, check for allergies/dietary requirements especially as quite a lot of children are allergic to cow's milk.
For those kids you could offer sandwiches or something else brought from home alongside the veg and carrots.

Hooplahooping · 02/02/2024 14:13

Pizza is good - my children go to a ‘fancy’ prep school with lots of terribly overbearing mummies - and we still have pizza of various kinds at at least half the parties!

Instead of a veg plate - I’d do a big fruit + veg platter - most children can be persuaded to eat cucumber sticks, watermelon slices + pineapple sticks always get demolished - and at least the children are getting a few more nutrients!

then skip the biscuits + have ice lollies for those that want them - and a piece of cake to take home.

(is what i would do!)

Queijo · 02/02/2024 14:14

At DD’s birthday recently I did sandwiches, crisps, hummus and breadsticks and a platter of the little cakes/cookies/mini rolls etc you get from sainsbos bakery. Easy peasy - took me 20 mins to do. Stuck them on silver platter from Poundland so at the end I just chucked everything out.

Honestly the kids will be charging about having fun, they don’t care what there is as long as it’s not healthy 😂
