AIBU?

New old phone or take her to see snow for the first time

I’ve managed to save back a tiny bit of extra money (difficult to do at the moment as there’s rarely any left over, like so many people.
I’m desperate for a new phone, my one at the moment is years old, the speaker doesn’t work (I can’t answer calls) and to properly charge it I have to tilt my charger wire a certain way 🙈 I want a newer model, but still a second hand phone (don’t want on contract etc, just to buy a phone outright)
With the small amount I’ve saved I could also take my Dd away for a few days to see snow for the first time, a few hours drive away (live abroad) in a mid range hotel.

I can’t do both. Which would you do?

She’s nearly 6. Would she really not remember a trip away to see snow?

She would of course. But if the first time she sees snow is aged 7 it will still be the same!

Do you need a phone for day to day life? To take school calls/ arrange drs appointments/ be available for school calls etc etc? If yes then this, for me, is the priority.

It’s not materialism btw. It’s responsible. However much we may resent it, with children (unless they are with us 24/7- unlikely aged6) we have to be contactable and in the modern world it’s by phone/ email/ WhatsApp.

Probably not. We had a holiday of a lifetime when my DD was 8 and she can barely remember it now she’s 12.

The op will probably be inundated with offers of phones now.

I don’t know OP, I took mine to swim with dolphins in the Caribbean at that age. Took him to Scarborough a year later and he was raving about Scarborough for years to come even when he didn’t even get a ride on the donkeys. 😁

And also, kids tend to imagine snow is fluffy and comfy, the plain reality is that they soon get wet and cold and get bored of it.

Can't you get a cheap basic phone? They're available here for €15-€30 which is nowhere near the price of a hotel for even one night!

I would go with experiences and memories over materialism.

Wanting a phone that works and can be used isn't materialism. 🙄

I’d want the trip - memories and experiences over material goods.

I might pretend the speaker on my phone doesn’t work as I’d rather not answer calls!

Why are people saying she won’t remember? She’s 5 not 5 months!

Phone , she’s got a lifetime to see snow and frankly snow gets very boring very quickly .

All my appointments, messaging etc are done over email, WhatsApp. I never ring out and I don’t think my phone really rings anymore.

As in, people don’t really call each other much anymore? Even the class teacher is on WhatsApp as well as email

How much are you intending to spend on a phone?
Do you need a smart phone or do you have tablets or other devices tha can be used for online banking and similar conveniences.
Brand new Nokia smart phone is much cheaper to buy outright than a Apple, Samsung etc and is not noticeably slower than those phones. DD and I have £159 Nokias with £3.99 ID sims which more than do the job, plus come in fab colours.

If I had to pick between the two I'd go for a cheap dumb phone and the snow. It's not just about making her memories it's about making yours too. My DD doesn't remember our trip to Disneyland but I do, I remember how speechless she was when she saw Cinderella and the conversation she had with other characters and how she giggled at the Stitch show.

Phone! My husband's phone was doing that and then it just stopped charging completely. He didn't want a contract so I got a Samsung from amazon for £120 which is totally fine and was brand new.

Firstly, if your daughter is only 6, then the holiday can wait. Children don't really remember holidays until they are 8 years old.

Secondly, I'm really struggling to see why a holiday and a second hand phone would cost similar amounts.

An OK second hand phone is about £40. A holiday surely around £200?! So why not get a £40 second hand phone that works then save the money until your daughter is older, or just have a nice day out together.

So how much have you got saved?
And at least one person on this thread has offered you an iPhone.

I agree. My chargers always go wrong after a couple if years, a new one will cost a few pounds.

Phone

Report
Headhurtsthinkingofausername · 01/02/2024 21:26

Around €250 saved. I’d prefer to have a version of the phone I have now (iPhone) so I can (hopefully) have it for a few more years. I use my phone for everything-work, notes, emails, messages, lots of photos, music etc. I’d rather not have a V basic one, so I’d rather wait and try to get one in a few months if I chose the snow. I always prefer experiences and just have it in my head that she should have seen snow by now 😅

A phone is a priority. Snow is not.

Save up and take her next year! Try and not to feel too guilty
