AIBU to expect an iPad to last for longer than 21 months? What on average is their expected life?

Depends on usage really, I've had an iPad for 4yrs, wouldn't say I use it excessively, still has a battery health of around 80 %

Product3257 · 31/01/2024 22:27

I gave my old one to my aunt, back in... 2016 give or take a year and it's still going strong. Not recieving updates anymore unfortunately but it works fine.
All depends how well you look after it, primarily the battery, if you're screwing up the charge cycles, it won't last long at all

EatsYummySprouts · 31/01/2024 22:40

Hi, is it really dead? Happened to me once and I had to hold down 2 buttons together until the screen came back on and then was ok again.

I tried all that. It initially overheated. It was so very hot I considered putting it outside in case it burst into flames. I could barely touch it. So I think it has burnt out. This is my third iPad and the others have lasted far longer than this.

I would definitely contact Apple. My last ipad lost sound after 2 years and I took it back to the Apple store. They swopped it for a brand new one after looking at it for about 3 minutes.

What does 'screwing up the charge cycles' mean?

I’m still using an iPad from 2012 as an ereader., as the Books app still works. I stupidly never saved down the books so if the iPad dies I will lose the books.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 31/01/2024 23:29

I have never had an Apple product that lasts much longer than 2 years.

About month 26/27, they always start getting ridiculously slow to charge and the battery dies really quickly.

Still have to have one for work phone but I am absolutely convinced they are supposed to gave a short shelf life so you have to buy more. Apple has always been more about the marketing than the product.

I have an appointment at my local Apple Store tomorrow. I’m hoping for a similar outcome. I don’t think I’ve charged it incorrectly as I’ve done exactly the same as I’ve done with my previous two and had no similar problems with them.

My dad is still using my first iPad that I got about 10 years ago. My last one was fine after 4 years but was stolen from my hotel room while I was travelling with work (my fault at least in part as I forgot to lock in the safe one day). Apple are generally pretty good if there are faults with their products so hopefully they will replace for you.

Good luck tomorrow. The overheating does sound unusual.

I've had mine since 2016, use it every day and it's fine.

First gen one still worked until very recently but had got very slow... I think because it didn't have enough memory to do anything.

Sounds like you’ve been unlucky. I currently have three iPhones, one brand new from work, one from my last job which is three and a half years old and one that’s between six and ten years old.

Admittedly my son got someone to change the battery on the last because I thoughtlessly used it as a bedside clock on a charging stand for a very long time, without thinking about what that would do to the battery, but it still worked before that. It just didn’t hold its charge.

Sgtmajormummy · 01/02/2024 00:04

Coming up to 7 years for this one. I have a few problems with the jack where just the headphones work, not the microphone.
I must have gone through 12 charger cables in that time!
I have a second hand iPhone 8. No intention of replacing it.

FrogFairy · 01/02/2024 00:31

I bought an iPad Air in 2016 which lasted 6 years. It started crashing and I think needed a new battery but I didn’t think it was worth repairing such an old device.
Current iPad Air 2 is 18 months old and going well. Both used for 11 plus hours per day (yes I need to cut down)
I am also interested in the comment about battery cycling.

Read the rest of the thread; you’re in a minority!

Sent from a perfectly functioning 2016 iPad 😁

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 01/02/2024 00:34

Fair enough if I'm a minority but it has happened. One iPad and 3 phones. 4 times seems like more than bad luck but appreciate I might be wrong.

I find Samsung streets ahead.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 10/02/2024 00:42

My local Apple franchise, not actually an Apple Store, just an authorised dealer/repairer, were completely unhelpful and just tried to sell me a new iPad after confirming the current one is completely dead. So I sent it to Apple and having looked at it they are sending me a brand new replacement. All within three days of sending it. So thumbs up to Apple.
