AIBU to be sorely cheering for the escaped monkey in Scotland

Light-hearted - mostly anyway

He's been on the run for 4 days now. He's managing to get some food (Macaques are resourceful so I'm not worried about him from that perspective), the climate is fine for him and I can't think of any predators for him. His biggest problem is likely loneliness, but given they are hoping he'll return if his own accord then maybe we should just leave him to it? I kind of think 'good luck' to him, and if he wants a life out of captivity then so be it.

I kind of wish he'd escaped with his troop and we might end up with wild monkeys in this country, but I'm probably on my own with that 😂

Ps: it seems I can't alter the typo in the subject. Sorry.

You’re not alone - If love it if we had wild monkeys in this country!

PriOn1 · 31/01/2024 13:21

Not sure which part of Scotland, but given today’s weather, I feel sorry for the poor critter.

Whattodowithit88 · 31/01/2024 13:22

Depends on the weather, can they withstand the cold completely alone?

icebearforpresident · 31/01/2024 13:23

This is one of those news stories i I love. There was an update this morning on the Scottish news that he may to be heading back to the zoo, he was seen near their boundary and followed by drone in the area.

CormorantStrikesBack · 31/01/2024 13:24

I think I’ve seen this type of monkey on a documentary in the snow before so he should be ok. But yes, probably lonely and not sure how long he’ll find food for.

Bargello · 31/01/2024 13:25

Not particularly cold at the moment in Scotland but v wet and windy. Monkeys are not solitary creatures and this one will be missing his friends/family.

Babyboomtastic · 31/01/2024 13:31

This specific type of macaque is from Japan and is also known as a snow monkey. They cope with the cold very well, though maybe they need the rest of the troop for that. In some places in Japan they like to bathe in hot springs.

If we find him access to a hot tub then he'll be grand 😃

I do think loneliness could be his biggest problem. It's a shame he's by himself.

Here's one in the snow

Have you been to Gibraltar? The monkeys were terrifying! 🫣

GasPanic · 31/01/2024 15:20

Well I'm cheering for him to get caught.

He'll probably die otherwise. Monkeys kept in captivity don't tend to build many food gathering or road traffic skills.

Gingerkittykat · 31/01/2024 15:28

I want him found and back home with his troop and easy access to food, it's not like there are many fruits growing in Kingussie at this time of year.

The weather has been horrific, snow, ice and well below zero recently.

RobertaFirmino · 31/01/2024 15:33

As much as I love the idea of native Scottish monkeys (MacMacaque?) this little bugger won't be able to survive for long. Hopefully, he finds his way to a safe place soon.

User13579367337 · 31/01/2024 15:34

Sorry to bring down the tone of the thread, but how are they planning on capturing him? Wouldn’t they go out and shoot him? I was in Chester zoo when they had an escaped baboon, the drive through monkey bit had closed and they wouldn’t tell us why at the time. They’re incredibly dangerous animals, and I remember that one was hunted down pretty quickly in a a nearby housing estate and shot

Emmadaily · 31/01/2024 15:38

Yes another poster here hoping for a safe return to his friends

"MacMacaque" 😂

RobertaFirmino · 31/01/2024 15:40

@User13579367337 Baboons really are nasty, vicious little gits. I don't think they are endangered either. I suspect it is considered safer to shoot them, all things considered. This monkey will be smaller than a baboon and not quite as nasty so can be sedated or otherwise caught much more safely.

ChrissyShenkle · 31/01/2024 17:02

I'm from near there, he's still on the run

My fear is he gets onto a road in the dark though I love the idea of a monkey being Free and causing chaos in general

Ds and I were saying he's probably found a hot tub that's been left on in one of the many many airbnb places up there.

PonyPatter44 · 31/01/2024 17:15

God, I'm on holiday in s cottage with a hot tub at the moment- if I go out there later with my glass of wne, and find some fecking baboon lounging in there, I shall be Very Unhappy.

The only hairy-arsed baboon I share my hot tub with is Mr Pony.

coxesorangepippin · 31/01/2024 17:15

They look like old men

He looks like Braveheart in that photo

As a linked story, look up Falco the owl who escaped from his enclosure in New York - after finding he was doing well fending for himself was left alone. He's now living his best life flying about and being spotted in Central Park. I love this!
