Light-hearted - mostly anyway

He's been on the run for 4 days now. He's managing to get some food (Macaques are resourceful so I'm not worried about him from that perspective), the climate is fine for him and I can't think of any predators for him. His biggest problem is likely loneliness, but given they are hoping he'll return if his own accord then maybe we should just leave him to it? I kind of think 'good luck' to him, and if he wants a life out of captivity then so be it.

I kind of wish he'd escaped with his troop and we might end up with wild monkeys in this country, but I'm probably on my own with that 😂

Ps: it seems I can't alter the typo in the subject. Sorry.

My fear is he gets onto a road in the dark though I love the idea of a monkey being Free and causing chaos in general

That's a pretty horrifying thought. I suppose the ones in the wild in japan have learned from their parents road safety in a way that they can't even they are captive born.

I'll not worried about aggression - I've stood very close to many of these and they might be cheeky but don't strike me as dangerous. They are resourceful and clever monkeys.

Btw did anyone watch Planet Earth 3 episode with the thievey Macaques? It does hope resourceful they are. I'm sure he'll find food.

"MacMacaque" 😂

Double 🤣🤣.

If he's making his way back then let him do it. I like the way he is being followed by drone and nothing sinister with regards to shooting (as someone said upthread). Maybe to knock him out, but I can't imagine him being killed.

I wouldn't want wild ones - at least in Gibraltar they are where the food is (people) . It was bad enough when my cat leapt from top stair on to my head. I don't want a monkey from the trees 🤣

Huffalot · 31/01/2024 20:46

I personally hope he makes his way back to his family. He's been spotted on train tracks and I'd rather he was safe than dead.

CormorantStrikesBack · 01/02/2024 14:08

Safely caught and on his way back to the zoo.

PotterHead1985 · 01/02/2024 14:14

Glad he is safe. I wonder what happened to the one that escaped recently in Wicklow (Ireland). Never heard an update on that one!

Have you been to Gibraltar? The monkeys were terrifying! 🫣

<pedant alert>

They're apes...

No, they are monkeys (Barbary macaques). Sometimes they are (wrongly) called Barbary apes, hence the confusion.

LakieLady · 01/02/2024 14:38

I also like the idea of having wild monkeys, but I'm pleased he's back home and safe with his tribe.

You beat me to it. Was going to point out the funny AI pictures being generated on this news item.

Sorry to bring down the tone of the thread, but how are they planning on capturing him? Wouldn’t they go out and shoot him? I was in Chester zoo when they had an escaped baboon, the drive through monkey bit had closed and they wouldn’t tell us why at the time. They’re incredibly dangerous animals, and I remember that one was hunted down pretty quickly in a a nearby housing estate and shot

Not trying to be a pedantic arse but Chester Zoo doesn't have a drive through monkey enclosure, all visitors' cars stay in the car park. It must have been somewhere else, maybe Knowsley Safari Park?

If it has a tail, it's a monkey. If it doesn't, it's an ape.

Glad our simian friend is safe. Perhaps he'd like a bird feeder of his own as part of his enrichment?

This specific type of macaque is from Japan and is also known as a snow monkey. They cope with the cold very well, though maybe they need the rest of the troop for that. In some places in Japan they like to bathe in hot springs.

If we find him access to a hot tub then he'll be grand 😃

they also have hot springs where they originate that's how they keep warm that and huddling together. so he's had his fun and I see he's home 😃

At Knowsley, the baboons have been known to strip cars! One unlucky visitor had one jump on her bonnet and start wanking! It spunked all over the windscreen!

This place is not for those of a nervous disposition!

ROFL @ "MacMacaque".

Poor little fellow is probably regretting his spirit of adventure all the same.

I hope he doesn't get run over.

they found him earlier today and he is probably resting after his shenanigans 🤣

I'm torn between relief that he's safe and disappointment that his brave bid for freedom came to nought.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 01/02/2024 15:51

The long-tailed macaques on Langkawi were feisty buggers. Wee were told not to keep balcony doors open. They’d follow housekeeping around and steal fruit/nuts off the platters.

AMuser · 01/02/2024 15:52

Jeremy Vine did a piece on this on r2 on Tuesday. Nearly joked on my coffee as it descended into a monkey expert from St Andrews uni being asked by Jezza do they ever mate outside their species. Yes was the answer with deer “who don’t seem to mind”.
Hasty change of subject

WhyAmINotCleaning · 01/02/2024 15:53

I was hoping he might go back and let his pals out too.

Hopefully he will now have elevated status in the troop. There was conjecture that because it was mating season and he was a beta he escaped to try and get his end away. Which proved tricky for him.

Mrsjayy · 01/02/2024 16:09

I think he is in a bachelor group I read he's going back in with them. I've been to HWP the outside enclosure is huge and by water I couldn't work out how he got out

That's incorrect.
